@MommaCornettesMoney.....Not disputing that at all. He was a very successful tag champ. However, would you not think that he would have gotten the strap at least ONCE from Bockwinkel, Hennig, Lawler or even, Rick Martel. Especially if the company was being run by Daddy?
Instead, he fights the likes of Johnnie Stewart & tags with Buck Zumhoff, wearing a Village People army fatigue cut-off and headband....looking very gay, I must say.
lfdkake91 your right i dont know anything about AWA History mainly because it was before my time. But be carfull because your making yourself sound like a Mark. And not a very good one since you have to repeat the same comment twice,lol.Idiot.
@suckyamomma30 Hey pussy next time you want to throw insults at someone at least be man enough to hit the reply button so that the person knows what you said about them & can respond back rather then being gutless coward talkin' shit behind someone's back like a fuckin' pussy.
Good speaker? Yes. Strong? More then likely. BIiggest? Doubt it there was Andrea. Agile? Oh please. He was one of those lumbering Wrestlers that you would watch just to get to a good match.
Again you know nothing about wrestling history. Blackwell was very agile for a 400 pounder. He reguarly threw dropkicks, could jump high into the air to deliever elbowsmashes & I have even seen him execute flying headbutts & flying bodypresses from the top rope.
Again U know nothing about wrestling history. Blackwell was very agile for a 400 pounder. He reguarly threw dropkicks, jumped high in the air to give elbow smashes & I have even seen him do flying headbutts & flying bodypresses from the top rope.
@suckyamomma30 No, he was pretty agile in his prime. By the mid-80s, when his refusal to take care of his own personal health really caught up with him, he slowed down a lot, but earlier on he could move pretty well for his size. That was always part of his gimmick, his agility for a guy who was well under 6 ft tall and over 400 lbs.
Roger Kent at Ringside !!!! a voice I literally grew up with... All Star Wrestling was on right after Speed Racer here in Milwaukee on Sunday mornings... Channel 18 !! GREAT memories with this vid.. thanx !
You and me both, brother. I think it was on after Twilight Zone on Saturdays also.
Let me ask this, who was the promoter of the AWA? At times, I heard the names Dennis Hilgart, Wally Karbo, Al DeRusha, and Stanley Blackburn alternately referred to as promoter.
Verne Gagne was the owner & promoter of the AWA, although he used many of the names mentioned as frontmen. Wally Karbo was a promoter & minority co-owner w/ Gagne. DeRusha was head of TV production &Blackburn was the figurehead AWA president.
@KillJesus Very underrated! He was a great heel along with Ray Stevens back in the early 70s in the Midwest. I saw a lot of them in those days and they were heat. Add Heenan in, and you had pure entertainment. Bockwinkle's condescendingly smooth interview style was perfect for him. Ray was a little gruff, but still enjoyable. Two guys I loved to hate.......and I miss them.
Jesus Christ, no wonder Greg never got over as a wrestler, he was too busy trying to get a job as a local news sportscaster. Who the fuck cares about the Minnesota Golden Gophers wrestling team?
@yardlet6 He was the Hangman in WWF and in Canada. He was in an automobile accident that ended his career. He and Swede Hanson held the International tag belts.
Somebody never lit a light under the guy to deliver a good promo. Hell, back in 85' Sgt. Slaughter tried by giving him a militia makeover and it still didn't work. Watching Heenan, Mad Dog, Nick, Blackwell, and then seeing Greg its really awkward. It's good to be the promoters son.
even his dad couldnt make him a good wrestler! wrestling fans arent stupid we(even the marks) know when somebody is the shits and when somebody is gonna be big
@vividwatch47 Few people did win singles titles in the AWA. They only had the World title until introducing the America's title in 85, then the TV title in 87. And those titles rarely changed hands.
The tag titles rarely changed in AWA too. Blackwell held the tag belts for over a year, so that is pretty good. He was one of the top stars in the AWA 1980s. That is undeniable.
The AWA was never on top of the wrestling world - NEVER!!! It was always boring and poorly promoted. As far as a quality entertaining wrestling program goes only Crockett gave the McMahons a run for their money. Turner tried to mimic the WWE and even the casual fan knew that would never work in the south...
You have no clue to life...Back in the day the AWA was as good as any other promotion.Poorly promoted ? The AWA was big all over the world.I dont remember the WWF leaving the east coast.
The AWA always was and always will be the laughingstock promotion in wrestlin history. Half of the roster was horrific e.g. Baron Von Raschke & Greg Gagne. Not to mention the worst announcers too. A real snooze fest. If not for the ESPN deal they would have folded up much sooner. Backlund traveled to Japan often. I can't blame him for not wanting to waste his time with DQ wins over Bockwinkel. I dare you to tell me that Verne Gagne didn't look like just as much of a jobber as his son!
Actually in the '60s & '70s the AWA was a large & very well respected wrestling promotion which featured some of the best wrestlers in the world. It was only from the mid-to late '80s that the AWA fell on hard times & really deteriorated as a promotion. You are juding the AWA for only its last few years of operation.
@DarthSid1969 That is wrong. the AWA was maybe the most successful promotion of the 60s through mid-80s when Vince attacked them and started his expansion. The AWA you saw on ESPN was a shell of the former AWA. It might not be your style, but to act like they were a small struggling promotion just isn't true. They were maybe top dogs overall during that 20 to 25 year period.
Not sure why you mentioned Backlund either. He didn't wrestle in the AWA very much.
no. slaughter(bob remus) was super destroyer mark2. neal guay from montreal(hence the french accent) was super destroyer mark3. guay also worked the wwf in 1980 as the hangman.
Wow, Remus looks outright skinny here.
