I think my dad had a crush on Ms. Forrest in 1940 when he was twenty. It's good to listen to this music. I see it meant as much to dad's generation as our music means to us today. Wonderful.
I agree that Helen Forrest was one of the greatest singers of the big band era. However, if you google Bea Wain, and search for a video of the song, "Heart and Soul", you will discover a lesser known, but equally talented female singer. Also, "Heart and Soul" is not just three verses that are repeated over and over again, as many people play it. It does have a bridge.
I only recently "discovered" Helen Forrest, not being too familiar with names of vocalists who sang with the Big Bands of the 40's. I can't get over her voice - just as great as Billie Holiday.
She is always great. I have a 78rpm Decca album of Dick Haymes and Helen. One and Only !!!!

Tonight you’re near to me in a light bright as day
But you’re so dear to me, I could see you even miles away.
I have eyes to see with and yet when we’re apart
I close my eyes and see with my heart.

@rokedetbamidbar In my opinion Helen Forrest was the best female singer of the big band era.

@catman916 - Totally agree, and Artie Shaw and Harry James were the two best musicians.

@rokedetbamidbar the best singer of the big band era is Helen Forest for sure, and also for the ballads soloist, Doris Day is the great one.
