If I had a voice like that, I'd go for a walk down a street that's heavily populated with people, and randomly start singing. Yes... I'd get laughed at possibly, but at least I'd bring joy to one persons face who's having a bad day. :)
What Ms. Fleming does is honourable, her voice is beautiful but caught in her throat, so she cannot project the text. The dress reminds me of certain Baroque paintings, with a lot of fabric flying around in different directions.
This is lovely. I am not a fan of hers but here she follows the vocal line flawlessly, with long breath control and a smooth tone of liquid gold. Yes, she still uses some jazzy mannerisms in the legato passages, but they are very few. She could never sing Norma onstage (and at 52 she never will) but for a rather intimate concert this is very fine.
BUT
The most beautiful Casta Diva ever sung, EVER, is by Montserrat Caballe, live against the Mistral, Orange 1974. Have a look, weep, and marvel!
With all respect to achievements of this lady but my cousin Inga Kalna sings much better. Not because Inga is my cousin but because I have received musical education and can clearly distinct difference. Inga is already beyond reach for Renee Fleming.
@incantatis I heard your cousin and she sounds lovely but I still prefer Renee. I don't think you have to have musical education to have appreciation. This song requires a depth of feeling that is hard to define in purely technical terms, and I think Renee expresses Norma's pain so much better than Inga. I think Inga lays on the sound a little too richly at times considering how fragile Norma is supposed to be feeling at the time.
@abelcantolover I did refer my comment more to vocal abilities than theatrical but I accept your opinion and respect it. It probably is matter of personal preference and taste but whole art is totally in this area and that is why we enjoy it so much. Thanks for your comment, true interest and such dedication to music!
Was Fleming gestisch macht, erinnert mich immer an Hollywood.
Felicidades Congradulatios Renee Fleming for your performance.
The voice is pure liquid gold. The atmosphere, the setting, the voice. I can only imagine audiences in 19th century Europe hearing Jenny Lind sing this; it was written that her Norma was legendary. This is bel canto as it should be, seamless, elegant and as near perfection as possible.Thanks for posting this.
Have any of you ever seen " A Mid Summer Night's Dream"? I have the soundtrack to it and it's primarily opera songs. Renee Fleming singing Casta Diva was on the soundtrack and such a moving and beautiful song.
I have never heard before a singer trying to copy so desperately to Montserrat Caballe's Norma... Obviously she doesn't get right there. It is a good version but far from great. Check for Norma Orange 1968 and you will find out whose singer she tries to copy
NO ONE can sing Casta Diva like Renee Fleming can. I have convinced myself of that because every time I hear her sing this song I'm brought to tears cause man, it's so fucking beautiful. She's so flawless. This is my favorite operatic rendition of this song; her version. She's magnificent. Everyone always talks about Callas, well, I beg to differ. I'm with Fleming all the way on this...truly magnificent.
@Kevinv213 There's not much point in comparing Callas and Fleming. They were two very different artists, trying to reach different goals with different means. R. I. P. Maria Callas.
perfection. This is a very perfect performance, controlled magnificience. I love this singer's intertreptation and her voice is just so beautiful. She is beautiful, actually. It isn't any wonder why she is so highly loved. Brava Renee!!!
I saw her live recently in Athens - I am not ashamed to say that several times tears slipped though my eyes because of the Immense Beauty of the singing especially her Morgen (which I have posted in my page from that night) was flawless. It is not real her ability to create a Flawless Vocal Line - it is a Miracle - we are used to call coloratura miracles (very often) but hearing Fleming's sound makes you realize that what she does with her sound is NOT real - it is DIVINE :)
that place is gorgeous...for me it makes the whole thing come together..all the elements for a sublime experience...and really good quality video too..love this

Megusta y admiro mucho a Mme.
This is the first time I've ever heard Fleming do something that didn't remind me of a chicken gobbling. She sounds pretty good. (: This is like the third time in a row that I've listened to this.
This is beautiful as a recital or concert piece only. Fleming doesn't have the right vocal type for the entire Norma opera which suits a dramatic soprano or dramatic coloratura. Fleming doesn't have coloratura, this is the most difficult challenge in opera. Even Wagnerian sopranos have said they'd rather sing 3 Brunnhildes over 1 Norma. Fleming can't sing this, what you hear is a beautiful recital version but not the real Norma. Callas can sing it, Sutherland, Caballe, Verrett, Deutekom, Eaglen
stone me but it is for example in comparison to Sutherland....boring...beautiful, perfect but...boring...am sorry...i didn´t want to be critical or negative ...unfortunately i just listened to Dame.
Wow, what a great trill at the final seconds of the aria! Fleming is the only singer with a perfectly natural and well supported trill in our days. Her performance is extremely beautiful and accurate in overall, though she does scoop unnecessarily in a few spots. If she managed to sing those passages in a cleaner way this "Casta diva" would be absolutely flawless (and, of course, the fact she has a unique and inherently moving timbre helps a lot).
@Homoclassicus I agree with you on all counts. I'm not sure if her scooping comes from fear, lack of ability, or lack of training to sing those notes clearly. She certainly has the range, but not the projection needed for first class opera. I'll bet she's a very good dramatic singer, however. I love her expressiveness. This is an impressive interpretation of Norma--a really tough role.
@79barkingspider Renee Fleming - Lack of ability or training? LOL. Hysterical. "Not the projection needed for a first class opera singer." Even bigger hysterical laughter. I'm sure she would appreciate that you called this "impressive," though, what with you high standards. LOL.
@79barkingspider Don't worry, my LOL was real. I was laughing at what you wrote. You said: "I'm not sure if her scooping comes from fear, lack of ability, or lack of training to sing those notes clearly. She certainly has the range, but not the projection needed for first class opera." Lack of training? Not the projection needed for 1st class opera? Maybe you just don't know who Renee Fleming is because those comments ARE laughable.
@100fulallmusic I was LOL with you. I wonder if barking spider knows who Schwarzkopf is. I think she was the one who trained Renee Fleming to develop the portamento.
She is really helped by the phenomenal acoustics of this venue, which makes her voice sound bigger than it really is. I saw her at the Met (13th row, Orchestra) and had to strain to hear her. Beautiful interpretation though; so much more mature and expressive than the CD version. Still wish she'd lose those annoying swoops, though.

I echo your thoughts, Senor Juan! Absolutely gorgeous! Thanks a lot for sharing this lovely clip with me! Hope you have a happy weekend, mi amigo! :-)
What a beautiful room! OMG it almost eclipsed the music, breathtaking! Now on to Ms. Fleming...I love Renee, love her voice, think she is beautiful, and it is such a joy to watch a singer who can convey the fact they love to sing as well as she does. I heard her recording of Casta Diva some years back and did not think it was her forte, but she has really brought it up to par in this performance. Brava, Renee!
Flawless singing from the moment she opens her mouth to the very end - Bellini is so rarely sung this well by anyone . Pitch, legato, vocal line, beauty. Simply incredible singing
Do you realize how fucking stupid you sound when you insult virtually every opera singer who performs Bellini's music? "So rarely sung this well"--and just who are you? Stick to Lady Gaga.
Lady Gaga is trained as a classical musician and if she were to comment here, she'd tell you to your face that you're ignorant to make such a statement.
Gaga is a musician 10 times better than the opera singers you listen to ;)
Sorry being an opera musician doesnt necessarily mean you are a better musician than a pop or jazz or rock musician Sorry to burst your bubble of Stupidity :))
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Does this woman have no shame? She is not on pitch from the moment she begins. She is so flat that it is embarassing. Her voice has no flexibility. This is frightful. This role belonged to Callas or Cerquetti. If you want to her it done well, listen to them. Look at the manipulations that she makes with her face, the tension in the neck, the bowing of the head to force the air. Shameful.
I usually do not like Renee, but this was great!

@LohengrinT
Do you realize how fucking stupid you sound when you insult virtually every opera singer who performs Bellini's music? "So rarely sung this well"--and just who are you? Stick to Lady Gaga.

@Sammyjackson1488
I prefer lady Gaga 1000 times from the singers you listen to :))

@LohengrinT
Lady Gaga is trained as a classical musician and if she were to comment here, she'd tell you to your face that you're ignorant to make such a statement.
leslielandberg 6 months ago
@leslielandberg
Gaga is a musician 10 times better than the opera singers you listen to ;)
Sorry being an opera musician doesnt necessarily mean you are a better musician than a pop or jazz or rock musician Sorry to burst your bubble of Stupidity :))

Canbetto1 your comment is shameful and so flat it is embarrassing. I can only assume you have a hearing impediment or something. Renee is terrific.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Does this woman have no shame? She is not on pitch from the moment she begins. She is so flat that it is embarassing. Her voice has no flexibility. This is frightful. This role belonged to Callas or Cerquetti. If you want to her it done well, listen to them. Look at the manipulations that she makes with her face, the tension in the neck, the bowing of the head to force the air. Shameful.
