But a majority of the witnesses has recanted their statements (except for two of them, which one is said to be the actual shooter). There is no real evidence linking him to the murder. ma7799- here is another fact; take Arkansas and Iowa- two states of similiar size and population. Arkansas retains the DP, Iowa does not. In 2007 Iowa RECORDED 37 homicides, Arkansas RECORDED 191. And the Iowa figure was a REDUCTION in previous years. Arkansas has been inconsistent but is obviously a more violent state. The DP does not work! It does not deter criminals- some even see it as a mark of honour! We are not seeing the pleas of innocence in other cases as in this one. FREE TROY DAVIS

Hanging is still available in two states and I would not be opposed to having it replace LI and the chair. $30 for rope is very cheap and effective. Concerning the humane issue, I don;t think shooting a police officer multiple times is humane.

He may be guilty.. He may be innocent. The only ones that know the truth are Troy Davis and God. What I do know is that it is not for me to take another person's life for any reason and I am glad that this man's death is not on my hands. Our judicial system is not infaliable as evidence by how many innocent people have already spent years in jail or been executed. How many more innocent must die because we think we have all the answers?

They dont need physical evidence if you already admitted guilt. So yet again, the supream court sends this to a federal judge for evidence review. How can we, as americans stand for this? Scalia himself said in his desent that its a fool errand. When will this dog be put down like the animal that he is? Evidence, What fucking evidence! Im not a "professor", but I do have common sense. This animal killed the officer and is manipulating the system. He shot a man earlier in the evening and thats been proven and undisputed. The same gun that was used in that crime was used to kill the officer. Thats a proven fact. You dont have to a "professser" to figure out what happened. But the only evidence they got that he is the shooter, is the witnesses. But a majority of the witnesses has recanted their statements (except for two of them, which one is said to be the actual shooter). There is no real evidence linking him to the murder. If they had solid evidence, why haven't they executed him yet? Why do they keep delaying it? They need to put Sylvester Redd Coles on trial. He was the one fightingting the homeless guy, he had the gun earlier as well.

I know the later won't listen to one individual... but maybe lots of people will change that. An innocent British Asian man was on death row in Pakistan and because of such pressure, the decision was overturned and he eventually returned to the UK. Thankyou for your reply.

You are incorrect; I support the electric chair fully, although I would prefer hanging, since that is very swift. I do not agree with lethal injection, though, since it takes too long and gives the inmate a chance to file suit because they "feel pain."

ma7799- here is another fact; take Arkansas and Iowa- two states of similiar size and population. Arkansas retains the DP, Iowa does not. In 2007 Iowa RECORDED 37 homicides, Arkansas RECORDED 191. And the Iowa figure was a REDUCTION in previous years. Arkansas has been inconsistent but is obviously a more violent state. The DP does not work! It does not deter criminals- some even see it as a mark of honour! We are not seeing the pleas of innocence in other cases as in this one. FREE TROY DAVIS

donnalarson- indeed theres some cause for optimism. I believe the DP in the US will be scrapped in our lifetime. Japan is the only other developed country that retains it. Global pressure is rightly on those countries that do especially China (the worst offender) Iran and the USA.

ma7799- it is a deterrent or reduces violent crime- certainly nothing significant. There is a lot I want to write but obviously theres space limitation here. If someone has been convicted of a serious crime in an absolutely fair trial they should serve long, hard prison sentences. The DP doesn't work and in my view is state sanctioned killing and therefore one more reason it is wrong. In this case even a former US President and the Pope have pleaded to commute Troy Davis's sentence.

The death penalty PUNISHES for a crime that has been committed and that is where the definition comes from-Capital Punishment. The inmate is no longer a part of society or longer a burden so that sounds very significant. Called it state-sanction killing is a disrespect for law and order, and President Carter was the softest President we ever had.

ma7799- punishment is important but it is not the only thing that is important. Is reducing violent crime in order to have fewer victims not also important? Furthermore the 'eye for eye' ideology coming across here sounds more like revenge than justice. Ie they commited a ghastly crime so we should fry the bastards. Why stoop to their level? Have you ever analyzed the design of a Pyramid, and pictured the FOUNDATION lower class laid stones in mass, that upholds the higher but lesser in value positioned stones? ma7799- did you listen to this video- even the other inmates think Troy is innocent. The police involved in handling the case were obviously traumatised by the violent death of their colleague- this explains why they were hellbent on seeing someone pay for it and pressure witnesses. The officers in that shouldn't have been directly involved. Emotion clouds judgement. I know. And if the police kill an innocent why don't they face the same treatment? Shouldn't everyone be equal under the law?

The USA has now right to lecture any country about human rights as long as the death penalty is maintained. If someone is 100% guilty, they should serve a life sentence, but not the DP. I hope Troy Davis gets clemency.

Hanging is still available in two states and I would not be opposed to having it replace LI and the chair. $30 for rope is very cheap and effective. Concerning the humane issue, I don;t think shooting a police officer multiple times is humane.

ma7799- I agree; killing is never humane whatever name it is given. I still think the DP is more revenge than justice. Revenge is getting equal with the perpetrator (ie life for a life) justice is making the perpetrator pay for their crime. We cannot play God with human life no matter what that person has done. Frankly I don't see why only two states use that method as an option (which hasn't been used anyway) From a practical point of view shooting/hanging would presumably be a lot cheaper.
