  • the heart plug was introduced in the dune movie by david lynch, it adds to house harkonnen's sadism

  • Was the Heartplug in the Novel?

The whole Concept sounds stupid, that thing could be pulled out by accident, and you are dead.

btw: How is it even fixed? The heart is beating and the chest is constantly moving.

  • wow, this makes the Harkonnen look good. Although the beginning was too copied from Lynch, the rest of the cutscene was well done. This guy is like a more humorous version of Piter.

  • I just love his "go to hell" finger movements when he finishes the briefing :D

  • "It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of Sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion."

    Awesome line!

  • I thought the Harkonnen color was green in the movie.

  • The Mentat Hayt De Vries, Really reminds me of John Malkovich. He even speaks like him....

  • Hayt de Vries is the worst Mentat ever besides the Atreides Mentat in Emperor.

  • I am not, under any circumstances, Billy Mumy.

  • So that's what an Oompa-loompa looks like, on stilts.

  • Faaaaaaaaaaagiiiiit

  • what a faggot.

  • This guy was flawless for the role, just perfect. But they should have just called him Piter de Vries. Hayt was Duncan Idaho's decanted clone as a mentat.

  • holy crap its Weird Al

  • It is by scatman alone that set my mouth in motion

It is by the scatman's world that the tounge aquire speed

    The mouth aquire sputter

    The sputter become a warning

It is by scatman alone that set my mouth in motion.

  • Why does Hollywood always spoil things? Keep the original.

  • Hayt rules!

  • Hehe, back in the Dune 2000 era, Harkonnen obviously served Froot Loops.

  • I just love evilness XD

  • Heartplug...more like buttplug listening to this guy.

  • I miss the old mentat from Dune 2... he was cool.

  • good game but dune 2 was much better or emporer later.

  • The beggining speech would be a very interesting thing to tell at a job interview ...

  • is it me or he looks like Matt Stone

  • lol...he looks like Jim Carrey

  • Yes the ghola of duncan idaho's name was Hayt, since this actor/mentat looks VERY close to the mentat piter from the original Dune movie (the old one) i guess they thought it would be a cool little nod to name him Hayt instead since hes technically not the same person as Piter (i thought this mentat was a ghola as well just a ghola mentat and since he was a ghola they named him Hayt like Duncan Idaho's ghola)

  • go quickly threw the desert

  • Harkonnen = grizzly eyebrows

  • This is the campest thing I've seen in my life.

Makes Red Alert 3's cutscenes look like contrived shit.

    FOR THE DUKE!

  • elaborate hand motions :)

  • Ok, after having watched the movie again, this is not Brad Dourif. Dourif plays de Vries in the movie.

According to imdb, his name is Robert Carin, like heiamll said.

  • Have you seen the movie?

Actually I think that this actor fits the role of Harkonen mentat, be it Piter de Vries, or Hayt even better than Brad Dourif. If you've also read the book, you will know that Piter DeVries had a mellifluous voice, that went into great contrast with his sadistic nature and for any Bene Gesserit it was a sign of ruthless killer. Brad Dourif does well as Piter, but Robert Carin would be even better I think just because of this. Dourif has rough voice.....

  • It's Brad Dourif.

Most known for his role as Grima Wormtongue in the LotR movies.

You never go wrong with casting him. Pretty underrated actor.

  • isn't this John Malcovich? lol i never noticed it before until now...

  • No its not Malkovich.. Mentat Hayt De Vries is played by Robert Carin.

  • oh right! nevermind! thanks for correcting me! =]

  • \o/ Glory to Harkonen's House! \o/

  • This is what he says

It is by the will alone

I set my mind in motion

It is by the juice sapho

    the thought aquire speed

    The lips aquire stains

    The stains become a warning

It is by the will alone

I set my mind in motion

  • What did he drink.

    Looks like blood

  • It's Sapho juice, it's supposed to heighten their abilities

  • @EmmaLBooth It's actually cough syrup

  • sapho juice...

in the books wasn't the ghola of duncan idaho called hayt?

  • This guy belongs in San Fransisco

  • I always thought this guy was played by John Malcovich

  • How does he know you have no heartplug? Are you supposed to be topless or something?

  • @ak981260

In Lynch Dune heartplug was on wearing, but I'm not sure, long time passed since I've watched it.

  • 0:01-0:09 ya what he said

  • HOUSE ATREDIES RULE!! i forgot where here ordos???

  • i like the ateides but i keep getting pwned on this

  • "I am the Mentat Hate"

This a reference in the Dune Books: (Specifically Dune Messiah) To Duncan Idaho. The fact he is an animal like person that can kill without consequence relates to Piter de Vries from the first Book who was also a Ghola and does the same litany for lack of a better word.

  • I am pretty sure no one mentioned that Piter was a ghola. But since I played the game before reading the books, I always imagined Peter as this Mentat.

  • The only mention of de Vries being a ghola was from the awful and non-canon prequels written by Herbert's son and Kevin J. Anderson. Those two hacks managed to contradict so much Dune canon, I find it unlikely they actually read the originals. And the "I set my mind in motion" mantra was a creation of David Lynch for the film adaptation. I'll let that one go though, because it's more than good enough to pass as original Herbert.

  • I've never read the Anderson/Herbert books, but for some reason I always assumed Piter was a ghola. I haven't read the first book in a long time and I always thought it was mentioned in passing, but apparently I'm wrong. Thanks for pointing this out MightBiteYa. I wonder where I got my misinformation from.

  • It's been a long time since I read the original novels, but I don't recall it being mentioned that he was a ghola (especially in the first novel, since the words "ghola" and "Tleilaxu" don't even occur in that volume). But I could very well be wrong as far as what was said in Dune Messiah, but I really don't think so. Maybe someone could verify. Anyway, avoid the prequels. They are AWFUL. They're written as ham-fistedly as Dune 2000 is acted, and entertainment values just don't translate.

  • They said Piter was "a revived corpse".

In the books, Piter was much more of a twisted sadistic mentat than Hayt. In this game, they switched the roles making the Baron the sadistic one.

  • @smithdanger

It may because it was said Piter was a twisted mentat and only the tlexiau provided them. Not sure if this was from the prequels or Dune itself. Been a long time since I read the book.

  • @toomanyaccounts

Ah right it was the Dune Encylopedia published in 1984 that said the tlexiau provided them and De Vries was sold to the tlexiau to be made into a twisted mentant.

  • @smithdanger well, de Vries is a Twisted Mentat, a Tleilaxu product. who knows, perhaps he is a ghola, or a composite of other beings, or something. Besides, this Harkonnen Mentat is named "Hayt", the same name of the Idaho Ghola from Dune Messiah.

  • well essentially that is true but there is a reference that he got Piter from the Tlielaxu which would mean considering he is a twisted mentat that he is most likely a ghola.

  • Whereabouts was that reference? Not doubting you, it's just been years since I've read Dune and I'm always curious to pick up a new tidbit. If it is the case that it's inferred he got Piter from the Tlielaxu, this would definitely be another case of B&K taking one of Frank's nice subtle touches and pounding it into the ground.

  • Hmm... Ordos or Harkonnen?

  • The heartplug actually is a health device. Because it's so polluted on Geidi Prime, that the occupants wear heartplugs to drain infected blood. However, the baron Vladamir Harkonnen in David Lynch's version, used to pull out the plugs and drink the victim's blood.

  • What does he say in the first few seconds? By the juice of safu?

  • He says:

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion

It is by the juice of Sappho that thoughts aquire speed

    The lips aquire stains

    The stains become a warning

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion

  • so many bloopers... so many memories

  • he resembles Piter de Vries in the '84 movie

  • He was also Chucky in Child's Play 3. I dunno if he did the rest of the trilogy, though.

  • The thing is that this commander in dune 2000is not of geidi prime but of another planet that is not mentioned in the game.

  • If all my guesses are wrong, then what does it mean?

    Thanks.

  • I'd say #2. I'm a little confused about it myself because I thought all Harkonnens had heartplugs, and that the Commander was Harkonnen himself. So yeah, I'm going with number 2.

  • "No heart plug. Don't let the Baron see you."

    Does this mean that:

    1. The player has already had a heart plug installed early in life (maybe during infancy, I dunno) but it can be removed without killing the player. And heart plugs are supposed to be worn at all times like a uniform, and not wearing them is against the rules.

    2. The Baron has a habit of installing heart plugs to people who haven't had it installed so that if they cause any trouble, then it's bye-bye.

  • I think the commander for all three campaigns belongs to neither planet but rather of somewhere else. So he is like a mercenary.

  • What it COULD mean is rather simple: You the player don't have a heartplug, therefor the Mentat is referring to the player of the game.

  • Number 2 is the case.

  • it would've been like 10x better if it was actually piter and they didn't half ass on the book's description

  • It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

It is by the juice of Sappho that thoughts acquire speed,

the lips acquire stains, stains become a warning.

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

  • I usually replace the word "Sappho" with caffeine. I most likely have stains on my lips from Cheetos at all times, so it ends up working out...but I don't end up working out...ow, I made myself sad.

  • I like his hand gestures.

  • Is that the actor which played Duncan Idaho in David Lynch's Dune film?

  • some of the best cut scenes from a game ive ever seen, especially such an old game.

even c&c retaliation had less and more crappy cut scenes

  • Aye, definitely

  • Try saying that mantra as fast as he did.
