@grantham8 , thank you so much! I was very proud to have the Topeka Symphony Orchestra play live to this video in concert last year. What an adventure to travel halfway across the country to see it, and the people were great! If you haven't already, please do a Youtube search on my name logoxyz where there are several other music videos I've made, maybe you'll find another you'll like. Hope to do at least one more project in 2011.

@DjTrafel, Merci beaucoup!

Bravo! And don't apologize for your French. Even with the not very reliable help of Google Translate it is better than many French comments (from native Frenchmen) one is compelled to read on You Tube.
@absinth98 it's courageous to cosfess you find it boring, because ther's noting to be proud of. Try to understand it rather, because it's great piece of music and great video too. But if you won't don't worry - someone has to sweap the streets, you don't need to have good taste for it.... But try, try. And give my regards to your teacher, he knows waht's good.
Thank you! As an aside, our US naming convention counts the wheels on both sides, so the steam engine a European calls a Pacific 2-3-1, we would call a Pacific 4-6-2.
This video would be tiptop without the color images and the scene with travelers. But it's still a feast for the ears, and for eyes when you love trains. Bravo, and thank you very much, logoxyz !

(I use Google Translate to read and write in French, therefore I must also apologize for the quality of my French language, but hope that it is understandable! I am very happy that you are pleased with the music and the video!)
Voir tous ces trains d'antan me bouleverse !
(I am very happy that you enjoyed Pacific 231! Please also listen to other music by Honegger--there is much greatness to hear! He is a treasure to Switzerland, France, and the world!)
This video was shown live in a performance of Honegger's Pacific 231 by the Topeka Symphony Orchestra, conducted by John Strickler, on October 24, 2009. The video "A Kansas Impression," also on Youtube, was made as a result of our visit.
Mon dieu ! Que de jouissances !!!
sorry for the German..I just wanted to thank you. Normally, I do not appreciate additional video sequences (I wonder if this is correct English) in classical (in the broadest sense) music; but in this case - well done! five stars.
Thank you (Danke)! I understand what you meant. This video was made to serve (to be in the service of) the music, rather than to distract from it or compete with it. Glad you enjoyed it!
GENIAL. In diesem Falle - gut gelungen! Fünf Sterne.
In my video's title, there is a mistake. In quoting the composer on Pacific 2-3-1, I read it as 120 miles per hour, when it was actually 120 kilometers per hour. Therefore, I should have written either 120 kph or 75 mph. I would just correct it on the video and repost, but I don't think there's a way of doing that without discarding the present one and putting up a brand new video...
Thank you! Your comment (all these comments) really makes my day! Tomenicus, I have one more Honegger selection here on YouTube, "Cherry Orchard", which is very different (hope it's not too tame for your son!). Honegger's music has a very wide emotional range! OTOH, my Metropolis series to music of Nemtin (after Scriabin) may be too scary for a 2 year old, better preview it yourself beforehand! Thanks again!
LIMITED I am riding on a limited express, one of the crack trains of the nation. Hurtling across the prairie into blue haze and dark air go fifteen all-steel coaches holding a thousand people. (All the coaches shall be scrap and rust and all the men and women laughing in the diners and sleepers shall pass to ashes.) I ask a man in the smoker where he is going and he answers: „Omaha. Carl Sandburg
Thanks so much for your kind comments, brfsk!! I'm pleased also with your Video Response, and hope that viewers will check it out and look at what you're doing!
Bravo! This video is something that had to be done. You've done it well. The music fairly cries out for visuals of massive machinery, steam and speed. It's going to my favorites list. Incidentally, have you noticed that in the buildup from standing still to madly carerring full-throttle, Honegger never uses an accelerando - just sneaks in faster tempi using ingenious rhytm shifts. (O.K., it's got some ritardando at the end, but what the hey! )
(conclusion), in which technology was used to wreak horror. I hear Pacific 231 as a hopeful affirmation of human progress after the war. Related to that, also listen to Honegger's Symphony 2 (1941) and Symphony 3 "Liturgique" (1945-46), both related to the 2nd World War and both of which end in a prayer-like mode, a hope for a better world.
Using footage from many sources, I aimed to directly connect the video with what the music is saying. Honegger's 1923 piece, especially near the end where full speed is reached, is possibly the inspiration for Ravel's 1928 Bolero. Some of the steam engines shown are contemporaneous with the music, some are not. It is interesting to note that the music is a celebration of modern technology, even though written not long after the Great War of 1914-1918 (WWI) (continued)
A good assortment of pictures to match with this great music. Thanks for posting this. Honegger is one of my favourite composers, but his works are played pretty rarely, at least in my country he's almost completely unknown...
Very nice.Thank you.

@vitavision A matter of preference. The styles of the two composers are very different, not to mention the train being depicted in the music.
