You may find this useful: English's r is what they call a retroflex r meaning it's pronounced with the underside of the tongue because their tongue is pointing toward the throat. Romance languages (Except for French) use the top of the tongue because they point theirs towards the teeth. It is very hard to roll an r with the underside of the tongue as you've discovered. It's easier when the taste buds rub the roof of the mouth and the point of the tongue aims towards your teeth when you do it.

And yes, instead of "purpuriu" (not purpuiu), we either say "violet" (comes from violet in french) ori "mov" (mauve in French).

Actually "portocaliu", just like in English, comes from the name of the fruit, which is "portocală" in Romanian. That is most probably because the first oranges were imported to Romania from Portugal, I guess.

Depends on who's speaking the Portoguese. My friends from Rio wouldn't say it like that. They'd say vehh jee. It does, however, sound exactly like Spanish.  The word for black sounds like it does in Portuguese though. I can understand Romanian if spoken slowly. I'm a native Spanish speaker who also knows Italian, Portuguese and French which, I'm sure helps. It's still not easy though because they put their definite articles at the end of nouns not the beginning.
