  • Que maravilla descubrir a este hombre y esta preciosidad de canción, ya lo he visto dos veces y las que me quedan : ))

  • How many times have i watched this video. I'm watching it now.

  • one of the greatest songs I have ever heard.so glad I discovered John Prine today

  • great vision

they have seen some stuff most of us read about

    re-think WAR

  • very touching song, and so true !

  • this song makes us all face truth with a strong reality. It can not be listened to with a heart and not have an effect on you.

  • I first heard this song when I was 13, I had been abandoned and I was alone, the principles of this song have governed my life ever since.....

  • THIS is why you should always be nice and respectful to your elders.

  • hard to watch without tearing up just like seeing him in concert need lots of tissue

  • You just had to know back in '71 -- if you were there -- that after hearing a song like this on John Prine's debut - this man was here to stay. One of the best singer/songwriters I ever heard. It gives me pride to know my generation had its Cole Porter & Gershwin. Dylan's great but this kind of song could only be a John Prine song. Even Dylan knows it. By the way, this video Adamfulgence -- would make Prine proud. John -- is not now on ANY major label. Maybe that's good.

  • @lastrada52 I'm really touched by your comment. Thank you....

  • @lastrada52 YA fuck Bob Dylan! John Prine all the way man!

  • @radicalmattitude1 - If you don't like Bob radicalmattitude1 -- don't listen to him. Don't buy him. World is a big place man -- lots of music & artists I can't stand too. But I just ignore them. But you know -- you can't deny Dylan hasn't written tons of songs that have been covered by many different artists from different musical backgrounds, cultures & whatever. That was my point. I do agree with you -- John Prine all the way. (He's been doing that for years).

  • Wow... You did a great job blending the photos with this song! The photos are perfectly blended... Curious, did you take them yourself?

  • My English teacher played guitar and sang this today so we could interpret the lyrics...I defiantly just downloaded this, great song.

  • @MekenzieF I'm impressed with your English teacher!! Glad you like the song! :-))

  • 'Adamfulgence' is impressed with an English teacher who plays the guitar as part of class, but "defiantly" does not teach spelling to the class 'MekenzieF' is in, or standard punctuation.

Adam has, however, uploaded an appropriate presentation of this fine song. Thank you for that.

  • @MekenzieF good for your teacher --what did you hear ? just curious

  • @MekenzieF JP, a man for all generations....

  • I feel so angry with myself for crying to myself every time I hear this. What a twat I feel. do I need counselling?

  • @Samjeno When you make the appointment, make it for two! But, if we can cry, we may not need it. :-))

  • @Adamfulgence Ifinally went for that counselling and the therapist listened to the cd and cried too telling me that I was quite normal and could he keep the CD... The cheeky twat...

  • @Samjeno Get a group rate for a LARGE crowd. I've been unexplainedly doing that for 40 years. Hard to comprehend how a 20-something had the insight to write a song like this.

  • @Samjeno well God gave us tears and for a reason and we gotta cry to stay healthy and heal and show that we are human and relate to others so it is cool and healthy to cry and show compassion I think!!!

  • @hugecashfan Thank you for your quiet inspiration , my friend. Now its fine to cry and my wife and two little ones always say "thats ok daddy" and give me a hug.

  • @Samjeno You are very welcome.God bless

  • @Samjeno You don't need counselling, it means you re a human being. This song is a masterpiece and yes, it makes us cry

  • I actually did cry listening to this once while simply driving down the highway. It came out of nowhere and quite honestly supprised the heck out of me as I'm not the crying kind. Anyway a testament to well written music and lyrics. You da man John:) Peace people!

  • @Johnnywhamo Thanks! Much appreciated!

  • what a beautiful job with an amazing song. love is all there is.

  • @DebraLovesKyle Thanks! I appreciate your comment! :-))

  • Any time I'm feeling sorry for my myself,I listen to this song and cry and realize how lucky I am....

  • This song reminds me of so many elderly people that I do see on the streets. I make sure I smile/ nod and say hello. Great song!

  • John has that amazing ability to reach into your chest and pull on each and every heartstring.

  • John Prine is one of the few lyricist that even HipHop fans like myself can appreciate

  • @batmandaplaya Thanks! That type of comment is truly appreciated!

  • i am speechless..thankyou

  • @d1sailer You're most welcome!!

  • Music with meaning, music with some of the most touching lyrics I have ever heard. Music that touches my heart and chokes me up everytime I listen to it. If I am having a bad day, John Prine brings me up, recharges my soul, and puts the petty things in our lives into perspective. I hope he takes the time to read some of the comments on here, and realizes the positive influence and impact he has had on so many peoples lives. He truly is a genius who never sold out to the man, Great job Adam !!!

  • @buddynreilly7662 Thanks a lot for watching and commenting. It's so great to see how much people appreciate and love John Prine's music!!

  • Great job with this video. The song and the photographs really stirred emotions in me. Feeling sad but resolving to do a better job of saying "Hello in there" to those elderly folks in my world.

  • @carolinasalt2 I totally relate and try to do the same thing myself on a regular basis. Thanks for your comment!

  • This is one of the best things I have ever seen on youtube. Kudos!

  • @djohn4096 Thanks for your generous comment. :-))

  • @djohn4096 Thank you SO much for your generous comment! Much appreciated!

  • been a John Prine fan for 40 yrs, love it when someone asks"whos your favorite singer" and I say John Prine and they say "John Who" and i think to myself God what brilliant songs and songwriting they've missed for 40 yrs.

  • @michaelb5e2 Indeed! You've got that one right! :-))

  • lOVE THIS SONG !

  • Not sure how many hip hop fans could appreciate a song like this, but there was this really cool DJ named Squashy Nice and he sampled the chorus. I think I am literally the only person with a copy of that track. I'll upload it and share it with you although I doubt you will be able to appreciate what he did with it. All the same it was the track that led me here and for that I have to be grateful to Squashy and hip hop. What a beautifully sad song - always respect my elders - good reminder.

  • @Kdnce If you upload it, can you tell how I'd find it? what to look for? title? Thanks!

  • @Adamfulgence I will let you know when it is uploaded! Right now I am trying to contact the artist to make sure he is OK with me putting his content here before I jump the gun, although really it is mostly John Prine's ;)

  • @Kdnce Sounds good! Thanks!

  • A terrific song, a forgotten gem. Thanks for helping me to re-discover it. I 'll be playing this one a lot !

  • @longboarder771 Yours is the type of comment that makes us youtubers very happy. :-))

  • this is a beautifully constructed youtube work

the video - images and font colors and placement all -

compliment perfectly (thats exactly the word i choose) the audio

a salute and a thank the artwork maker

    bravo & kudos

like all the others i love this song and now appreciate it even more having watched this

    thanks again and

    peace

  • @JustAintthatWay Wow! Well, you just made MY day! Thanks so much for your supportive/encouraging comments. More appreciated than you may ever know!

  • @JustAintthat Way

You have expressed exactly my thoughts as I watched this video. The choice of pictures is excellent, very moving and adds a depth of truth to the words, making it more real and personal. I will share this on FB....Good time of year to remember that there is more going on in our world other than tinsel and plastic toys. How did we get to the point where we don't value our Elders. Makes me sad.

  • old trees don't get stronger everyday, they rot, from the inside out... and old rivers become more serene and gentle as they wear their way through whatever it is that they are running through... of course floods happen every now and then

  • old people just grow lonely though... many of 'em. i am alone and since my wife & i have gone our seperate ways i find myself feeling lonely quite often. sometimes, the only people i see are the ladies down at the corner store annd the guy that comes to collect the rent money once a month. i never thought this would happen. since losing one of my lower legs three years ago, so much has changed. the proof is in the pudding... O_O

  • i played this on a show recently its just so sad we grow older and people forget us when we arnt useful to them any more

  • @maryfpkearns6 It sure isn't the respect and reverance for the elders that existed eons ago, it seems.

  • What great song, songwriter and video.

    Willie

  • ALL of us will meet in heaven and hear this great, great song.

  • My grandparents are in heaven now,if I could say hello to them after viewing this.GREAT WORK

  • @AIKENSOUL77 Thank you. Yours is a wonderful comment.

  • You Sir, are an Artist in every sense of the word. That is an excellent piece of work. As in all forms of art, others may not see it, but I do, and I sincerely appreciate it. The only thing I appreciate more is that brilliant song writer who penned it, John Prine. Thank you, and please don't stop.

  • @MrGeneralBriley Pardon me. "Madame".

  • @MrGeneralBriley Pas de problème! :-))

  • This is truly a heart centered song. That's why some people I know who are terrified of feelings degrade it. Yet this song has haunted me ever since I was a very young man and Bette Midler first performed it live in Concord, CA. This song is a consciousness raising piece. I truly do say hello to every elderly person I pass because of this song and got into hospice work as a result. Songs change people.

  • Thanks!

  • One of my favorite songs of all time by one of my favorite songwriters.

this song is brilliant\\\1 John |Fowler

  • You did such a wonderful job. Thank you so much.

  • @Sanlene2 Thank YOU for watching and for taking the time to write a comment! :-))

  • ...in a hurry...cuz I don't wanna read the other comments...the damm video ..or photograph slideshow...incredibly rivals that Masterpiece of a song..in fact they don't rival at all..both much too well done to contend..that's fer critics..I ain't...I just love stuff.

  • @pluggan1 I'll take your comment over a critic's anytime!! :-)) Thanks!

  • @Adamfulgence ..not at all...a very impressive accomplishment...and generous for you to share same.

  • Ooooh, God, make me cry, such a great piece you have made!

One of my most favoritist songs by a real Superman and you have simply brought it to loud yet poignant life with the wonderful photos of this Sad and Beautiful world!

Bravo! You so totally rock on this!

  • @strummeresque What a great comment!! Thank you so much!

  • great album,great song,great artist

  • Great Video Thanks For Sharing!

  • Been a Prine fan 4 some time! Thanks Dad!

  • John Prine < the Man < hes got me though a lot of hard times with all he's good old say songs that pick me up, must be lost in my world...

  • If you don't cry listening to this, then you're dead.....

  • I love john Prine. just love him...

  • how did i just discover this singer today????

  • very nice ...i love to catch a cry from this JP song every now and then

  • all you tube videos should be mobile friendly.

  • Absolutely beautiful and gut wrenching song. John can conjure up emotions from deep inside. Wonderful video as well!

  • Great JOB, fantastic videos keep up the great work. Thanks for all the work you do. LOVE IT.

  • A US Navy soon to be Chief Petty Officer introduced me to John Prines music in the mid '80's, I kinda drifted away from John's music for awhile, but I certainly came back later. What a singer/songwriter, and one would never guess he's from norhern Illinois, guess that's the influence of generations! I hope somebody's saying "Hello in there" to John right now!

  • A very touching song like John Prine knew how to write them!

  • THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS UPLOAD ! this was the first song my father taught me (finger picking) on guitar when I was only 10 years old......very beautiful slideshow and song all together !

  • I have to job well done sir. job well done with the video. it matches the music,

  • Met John in 1970. His music has made my eyes sweat ever since, sometimes with laughter, and at other times from a punch in the heart. I have been blessed in either event. A wonderful video. Thank you so much.

  • Beautiful, just beautiful

  • Those were the days, well before the technology and real estate crash!

  • @SHSATNewYork Yup! You can take that one to the bank! :-)) Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • @SHSATNewYork The song isn't about "those days." It's a timeless ode to people getting more and more lonely as they get older. It's just as true now as it was in 1973. I.E. One day 2011 will be "the old days" for a whole generation and this song will still ring true.

  • Heat breakingly beautiful song. The accompanying video was very touching and beautiful as well. John Prine is an American Treasure.

  • Unfortunately the person who made this changed the words of the third line so that it doesn't really make sense, and now lots of people will forever be singing it this way. The third line is "It'd been years since the kids had grown." As in: it HAD been years since they HAD grown. Not "It HAS been years since the kids HAVE grown". The first 2 lines are past tense: "We had an apartment..." and we "liked living there". The 3rd line is past perfect (it HAD been) - not present perfect (it HAS been).

  • @leathersword As a grammar aficionado myself, I found your comment interesting. It was definitely a typo. Beyond that, I hope you enjoyed the song and video. :-))

  • @leathersword ; Well thanks very much for the grammer analysis...I listen to music, as Townes Van Zandt said "For the sake of the song", but guess that's just me?

  • @leathersword Calm the fuck down, 99% of people don't know what the fuck you are talking about lol. If anyone gets the point and emotion of this song, the grammer does not matter.

  • @leathersword UM....and how many great songs have YOU written?

  • Comment removed

  • This is one of Prine's best. He's been a great songwriter!

  • You've made some great video's. This one may well be my favorite. Thanks.

  • What a wonderful compilation of images to accompany Prine's timeless ode to aging and the end game of the "American dream". I had the pleasure, on more than one occasion, of seeing and hearing Prine back in the day, while hopping old haunts on Lincoln ave. and North Ave. He, Bonnie Koloc, Jimmy Buffett, Steve Goodman, were the storytellers that informed my early adultoood. Thanks for this onee.

  • that was an absolutely great video to an amazing song - thank you

  • This song makes me cry like a baby. I have a 95 year old grandma and she is so lonsome all the time, it just kills me.

  • @nllleonard - Don't know how to upload my version but I thought you just might like - I really love this one - the sentiment the words say so much more than - well I think many people take away from this song their own feelings relative to themselves as we all have our own life stories to tell - I just take my own feelings and thoughts relative to my life U may not relate at all - nice vid I take my chances - I hope you like - you know this one I would think surprized if don't know this one

  • quite possibly the best song ever written. only randy newman's "sail away" even comes close...

  • Good for you to make this lovely vid, Adamfulgence ! A beautiful piece of work ! I saw John Prine at the Molson Theatre at Ontario Place many years ago. As I recall, I knew the words to every song he sang (there was much Irish whiskey that night so maybe I misremember...). It does not matter; your selection of images shows me that you love the song as much as I do. Thank you !

  • @mandalaguy Thank you for your wonderful comment!

  • my dad always used to play his john prine cds in the car and this one always made me miss my grandparents so much

  • The legacy in their eyes, and we blink and miss it in our pursuits. Not a dry eye here my friend.

  • Spend some time with an old person. They'll love you for it. Someday it might be you sitting there....

  • Thanks for posting with lyrics. I showed it to a group of 10 students in my college writing class. I asked them to write a reaction essay. All wrote about their experiences with old people and vowed to say hello and visit with grandparents. It was one of the best assignments of the semester. John Prine is a intelligent songwriter . I use others like Paradise and Sam Stone. I will look for more from you. Thanks.

  • I have never seen a montage as magically resonant as this one, Adamfulgence. I had never even heard of John Prine in my 52 years, but you just introduced his music to me in a most beautiful manner - many thanks, congratulations, and it's good to see that awe-inspiring digital art is alive and well.

  • As a video producer, I want to say what an outstanding semblance of images you've put together to help illustrate John Prine's masterwork. John would be proud.

  • Always one of my favorite songs, but this photo montage is stunning - so well done. Made me cry!! Made me remember my Mom & Dad and uncles. Thank you for putting this together and sharing it with us.

  • Great song, Iwas first turned on to this in the early 70s by Kriss Kristoffosen on the BIG SUR ONE HAND CLAPPING ALBUM! Thanks for the lovely video.

  • What a great song and video- last year I saw John Prine perform at Massey Hall in Toronto to a packed house- when the intro to this song started the entire audience got up and gave him a standing ovation before he could even begin singing- there were kleenexs pulled out everywhere- with an aging demographic upon us, this song should have millions of hits- I can't believe only 3500 have seen this video- I will pass it on, it has a great timely message for all of us... thanks for doing this.

  • @goryvo What an absolutely wonderful comment!! I can imagine myself at that concert; to think everyone did this before he even started is simply amazing and a tribute to the great songwriter that he is. I'm glad you liked the video as well and I thank you for your compliment!

  • This song hurts. It feels, yeah, but mostly it hurts. And that's Ok. Because it is the pain you feel after they pull the tooth, not the days of fear prior to the tooth being pulled. I miss you, Dad. Love, Patrick. I will listen to John Prine for the rest of my life and think of you.

  • It still blows me away that Prine wrote this when he was...how young? Late teens or early twenties? Not sure. Old soul, for sure...

  • I am a long time fan of John's music and loved this tune the first time out! Thanks for reminding me!,,,,,,,,,,,,,Cheers!

  • well done, very well done… (again)

  • This is a song that stays just in the back of your mind because of its haunting melody, and it was so nice to hear it finally again. I thought I saw my grandfather Cook or his twin in this video! Maybe it was him?

  • I spent as much time as I could with my Mother before she died.

This song kept me doing things with her. Beautiful song. All heart.

She died March 26th, 2009 at the age of 91. I love you, Mom. Think of you a lot.

I gotta go call my Aunt. She's 88.

    Thanks for the music, John.

  • @OL55CADDY It's clear that you really "understand" this song! God bless you for caring...

  • one of the most beautiful songs in rock history

  • John Prine is one of my favourite artists. You have created a beautiful video to match this lovely ballad.

  • @clarebannerman Thanks, Mike! I appreciate your comment. :-))

  • One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs that I have ever heard.

  • @mammascallywag John Prine is certainly a genius songwriter! Thanks for your comment!

  • very good video and song !!love

  • @cogermax91 thank you so much, Marie-Alix!

  • OMG this made my eyes well up. Very touching. I count your friendship amoung my many blessings. Keep doing what you do. Love your work!

  • @chatefrancaise I feel the same way! thanks, Chris!

  • MERCI !!! quelle chance de découvrir grace à Toi toutes ces musiques qui nous donnent tant d'émotions... bises

  • @29Shanti Et, encore une fois, c'est moi qui te remercie!! :-))

  • Hello Eileen !! How are you ? I love your video(s) !!

ArtsKris tell exactly what i think !!

    Tu es une artiste !!!

    À + Eileen !!

  • Again you have paired photos perfectly with the song! Great job! Thanks for sharing!

    : ) Thumbs up!

  • Attractive theme that that of the old age. You know how to choose the images. A lot of love, a lot of wisdom, a lot of control(master's degree) in this magnificent work. The talent and the art remain young eternally. You possess him.

  • Great work, great song, heart touching....who told a society which don`t take care of its children and old people, is a very sick one?...I don`t remember....it doesn`t matter who wrote this words.....

  • Welcome back Eileen. Lovely video once again. I enjoy your videos so much and because of you, I am a John Prine fan. Thank you and hello.

  • True, this song is very appropriate to what he says. He is a cry, somewhat bashful, of those people who want to give a voice to their loneliness. See, however, and a contentment with what they had done when young. (Sainte-Beuve: Happiness or unhappiness is nothing but old age often extract our past life). Congratulations and success always!

  • Welcome back and hope you enjoyed the vacation. Your description of the video is complimented also.If not for the You tube uploads many artist would still be unknown to me. I can't believe all the music that is this great and known by most was not played on local radio stations in the tri state region. Your video making is always excellent, Thank you for sharing.

  • Beautiful....Thanks for sharing.

  • No matter if depressing a little is a thyeme that makes u meditate about how we can prepared better to dont be more active and have a nice aged life, We need to honor the efforts of many old people who work hard for good things we enjoy today, as a family and values// Many cultures honor the elderly as all we should,!!

  • I made a couple of videos in which I tried to promote empathy for, and understanding of, our aging population. This video succeeds in getting the message across in a way I never could. It is timely and beautiful.

    Thank you.

  • Gracias amigo,te felicito por el video es muy emotivo.

    Un abrazo.

    Isabel.

  • Eileen, this is sad song, but transmit so beautifully nuanced feeling of melancholy of older people who look back in the past their life. This song reminds me of my grandfather and his stories about old age and youth. Thank you for this beautiful video, dear Eileen. It brought me back in the past in some nice moments spent with my grandfather.
