I think he is a terrible commentator as well, actually. So do all my friends who have seen the video and don't fence. (And at this point in fencing, they are the ones we want to appeal to.) Sure, by the standard of other fencing commentators, Derek Cotton is awesome, but that is because every American commentator I have ever heard in fencing is terrible. the 2005, 2007 world cups and 2005 international competition with Jeannet come to mind. He is a step in the right direction, but isn't very

@RabidPelican Your argument about him being a poor commentator is because your friends who don't fence think he is a horrible commentator. This is fencing, he is a good commentator for the sport, and your friends "who are the obvious experts when it comes to fencing" without actually doing it must obviously be correct

@Staffboat You completely missed the point, but I'll explain better. I have always thought Derek Cotton sucked, but the whole point is that non fencers don't like him, and his style is geared towards helping non fencers understand and enjoy the bout which is counterproductive. In terms of being good for the sport, he never says anything insightful and he gets calls wrong and blames refs. His comments are always really general and never say anything about fencer strategies or tactics.

@Staffboat Also, his voice is really annoying. I turned the sound off for every video. Nothing personal against the guy, I've never met him. I just don't like him as a commentator at all.

Where are your justifications? He is great because he keeps the flow of the bout during all the silent space and downtimes (i.e. period breaks) sure his calls may be off but atleast he provides some insight for newer fencers and fans.

Exactly!! He talks a lot and very appropriately and he's got a nice friendly manner of speaking. Doesn't disturb at all.. rather contributes.
