Hmmm, lets see now, potential explanations as to bugs flying with no gaseous atmosphere.

I'm thinking superconductive fibers in the wings that create a magnetic field (which also explains how the transport bugs fly so effortlessly and provides a viable theoretical basis for their FTL travel), but due to pluto's lack of any meaningful magnetosphere any bugs flying in the air would require one or more counterparts on the ground to give them something to 'push' off.

Rico gets nailed once, T'Phai does once, Carl kinda does a couple of times, so does Doc, etc. etc. (everybody once or twice, basically). However, while everybody else only gets hurt once or twice in the series, Gossard gets hurt once or twice every CAMPAIGN haha

Haha that is a really good question. Beating of wings generally requires things like gasses to create lift, so yeah, that is a good question... I mean I have a theory (although I have only a rudimentary understanding of Physics, so bear with me haha): the beating of the wings must have something to do with gravity. What do you think? (I also read that Pluto does have trace atmosphere during some periods of its orbit)

It's easy to make up explanations for stuff like this once you've read enough sci-fi books. Here's mine: the reason the bugs can survive in the thin or nonexistent atmosphere of pluto is because they can carry all the breathing gases they need for a battle dissolved in their bodies. The hopper bugs move by seperating these gases out from their fluids and expelling them from orifices under their wings. They carry the extra gases required for this in their oversized abdominal sections.

It could also be conceivable that they don't even need to breathe, which would also explain the lack of head-exploding-ness due to depressurization from pluto. also, an explanation for fire from weapons etc: possible terraforming operations from all those scientific outposts? therefore oxygenating the atmosphere slightly? eh, perhaps I'm reading to much into this.

If you read the novel, they use rotor-tube accelerated caseless rounds which are triggered with an electrical charge instead of a hammer (hence the odd sound and the drill noise when it doesn't work).
