Funny,my older sister 1st played the Butterfield record for me.Saw some Moby Grape on your site. There are some recent videos of them in Austin Texas playing Hey grandma and Omaha.Skip Spences son is now in the band. They are still awesome.
@williamtroth I have indeed watched their Austin videos. They sound AMAZING....Moby Grape that is. Very cool that your sis introduced you to Butterfield. My late brother Desmond gave me this album. I think I many post more from it at some point. But thank you for your story and thanks for stoppin by. From my heart ~"Jenny"
@williamtroth Awww xx didnt we ALL?! That is.....those who appreciate and really dig it? I play 'harp' (harmonica) so.......Butterfield really blew my mind as a young gal. Wow.....My brother Desmond was the reason . He gave me this album. I have not been the same since hehe! Thank you so much for listening . I DO appreciate hearin from folks. PEACE and love and all the best you hope for. x "Jenny"
...the buzzing guitar jab between lines, that tough, melodic harp solo, plus this hilarious, in your face guitar scream at the end...this banding is sick and they're basically saying - E-A-T-M-E-T-R-Y-H-A-R-D-S..!!!
As a huge Bloomfield fan I think he sounded a lot better post Paul Butterfield. I think he played a tele on east-west and IMO his real stellar tone was later on his flame top les paul.Great stuff though on east-west.
saw Butterfield in 1970 at eh Fillmore West . 1980 at Davidson College in Charlotte with Rick Danko - have his 1st 3 albums . But don't be slamming the Monkees - a fucking great group - so what If they didn't write a lot fo their songs - Elvis didn't write even one of his . Its fucking stupid on Jenn Wenners part that the Monkees are not in the Hall of Fame - Mike Nesmith and Mickey Dolenz had and have so much natural AND developed talent . and great voices . Truely under rated !!!
cmon i know (or i guess )it would be really hip to claim this is the real or better version...but as far as im concerned this is a hot mess compared to the monkees/wrecking crew version.....and for what ever its worth 40 years on the monkees infact played on a couple of the original lps back then and let me say there is nothing baring the harmonica parts they couldnt of covered here ---its really not all that
Wow! Thanks for posting this. Now I'll have to dig through my LPs and find the original album. Lovin' YouTube and all the wonderful people who take the time to share.
It's been established that the Monkees did this one after the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Now, I've always been more of a fan of so-called "bubblegum music" than the blues. I noticed that this comes from an album called "East-West". Right around the same time that the Monkees did "Mary, Mary", Herman's Hermits did a song called "East West", which I know very well. I don't even know if this Butterfield album has a song by that title, but if it does, is it the same as the Herman's Hermits song?
@BLUESMANRONCHICAGO Thanks for the information. In fact, I eventually found "East West" by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band on YouTube and verified that it is not the same song.
"When the first two Butterfield albums were released - they were revolutionary! - they more than any others .. brought blues music to the main stream white listeners ... in the ..60s"
I agree, but it also introduced a large group (me included ) to contemporary jazz.
The "East West" album, especially the title tune (one side of the LP) was great with headphones and a bit of your favorite mind altering substance.
When the first two Butterfield Albums were released - they were revolutionary! - they more than any others brought the 50s blues music to the main stream white listeners of the middle and late 60s, that along with Mike B and Clapton playing a gold top 50s les paul (and a sunburst) on Bluesbrakers launched an entire collector industry and musical guitar interpretive style. Butterfield completely inspired my harp playing and got me into Walter, Juinor, Sunnyboy, Cotton and alike.
Thanx Rose for posting this fine old specimen of Butterfield's best. This was the LP that helped us, as a band, turn the korner to making great sound
@TheJomogogo Their were better ones by Michael Bloomfield on this album namely what he did on the 13 minute East-West , but for something that lasted maybe 30 sec's in 1966 this was/still is an intense ending.
@mrbag60 one of my favorites on this album is I gotta Mind to Give Up Living, nice quitar work and a haunting song with rather gloomy lyrics, definition of a blues tune.
When Nesmith wrot this it was a month or two before the Monkees formed. When they did this in their second album people asked what this manufactured group were doing stealing a Butterfield song . Pretty rich. Butterfields version is almost punk rock.
just dont understand how anyone can compare the monkees with paul butterfield...michael bloomfield and elvin bishop...freakin' monks couldn't even play their instruments...one time back in '69 had the pleasure of playing with elvin at the experience on the strip...what a night! oh well, to each to his own.
yea i getcha. I was thinkin the dame thing. But this was originally written by Mike Nesmith. He was a real folk singer and musician b4 he was a Monkee.
But I always thought it was a Butterfield Band original until I posted this. Hehe! Damn Monkees....
sorta know that mike could play basic guitar, but it is a total shock to me that he actually wrote this song...wow!!!... way to go mike...btw...was down in fla. playing a few years back and davy jones has an english pub in jenson beach or stuart...i dunno i was lost. : ) was very nice.
@forfelix48 You do know this was written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees right? And both he and Peter tork were musicians before the Monkees. Davey Jones had a solo album out and performed on stage prior to being a monkee, and Micky Dolenz, though an actor, was an excellent lead singer and became a solid drummer. It wasn't that they couldn't play, it was that Don Kirshner didn't allow them to play ... until he was fired and the Monkees wrote and played almost everything on their third album.
Actually, they didn't always play all of their own instruments in the studio, but they did play them all while touring (except for the solo segments, which used backing band the Candy Store Prophets). A number of leading British and American groups (including critical favorites such as the Byrds and the Beach Boys) habitually used session players on their recordings. This commonplace practice had previously passed without comment. They were a talented group.

@forfelix48 Wow, you've clearly missed the point. You don't compare these guys w/the Monkees because they're 2 different types of music (and the Monkees productions were certainly at least as good as the PBBB, whoever participated). You're the type who'd like to compare 'Pet Sounds' and 'Electric Ladyland', eh? It's called apples and oranges.
Hehe! Thank you Cathy! I never win anything either which is why Im so ham dappy about this! ....haha! I just came up with that! Ham-dappy! xD Im nuts. And ...um....the last time I saw yr husband he was fallin down and bustin his ass in yr garden. haha im sorry I wont laff about that anymore. xD

What a version. This album has to be in the top ten of all genres combined. A
great blend of blues and jazz.. This version of Butterfield's bands had it going.
Sure there are better technical players than Bloomfield, he just exuded a feeling.
His share of cuts on "Super Session" was the best of his recorded output. Al
Kooper tried to recreate some of that feeling with Jimmy Vivino and it just
didn't work. We just didn't get enough from the true Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

the harmonica in this is just so insanely sick, what did Paul run his harp through? a tweed champ or something?
