  • gracias por colgar buena musica para nosotros los que amamos los 60s 70s

  • The reason it's from a telerecording is that it was done for overseas sales, many of whom were still B/W. Colour VT was expensive, and B/W copies were cheaper to produce. Telerecording or kinescopy works only on Pal tapes, but if you have an NTSC colour copy (usually unsharp) and a sharp clear telerecording, you can extract the colour part of the signal and overlay it onto the telerecording for a supersharp colour pal version. rtrusselcouk has it on his channel in recovered colur with sound.

  • Just google colour recovery, then whenon the homepage click past projects, and then full gamout colour recovery. They sills are amazingly accurate, maybe a little darker, but Jimmy Chaville's shirt looks just like the colour VT version. Maybe they're a little darker or washed out, but it looks great.

  • It seems the BBC have the COLOUR ep in the archives. There's stills on the coulour recovery working group wikki blog (search google for colour recovery). Stills exist for both recovered colour and original VT versions. This ep was used for two reasons. Theres enough chroma dot info to make a good restoration, and they have the colour original for a comparison of how close it is. And indeed it is close.

  • It seems the BBC have the COLOUR ep in the archives.

  • This is amazing. Did you see him roll his eyes?

  • I don't mind a bit of avant-garde, but I do mind a paedo at number 26...

  • The chart was always important back then, this is an interesting one containing as it does 60's stalwarts such as Diana Ross & The Supremes and the Dave Clark Five as well as more 70's orientated acts

  • If any surviving TOTP shows us what has been lost with the mass wiping this is it. It captures the zeitgeist of 69/70 era in one swoop this is quite possibly the most DYNAMIC TOTP I've ever seen: Savile on top form, the swirling backgrounds, fantastic sets & the tunes in between performances (The Horse Cliff Noble, Look-a-Py-Py The Meters & -best seague of all- the middle part of Chicago's I'm A Man straight after the Pan's People routine for that song). The theme music was also excellent!

  • Rumour has it that Mick Abrahams only saw a full performance of this a few years ago.

  • A colur version of this part of thisa show exists restored and on youtube, search "colour recovery working group" See Jimmy in colour!

  • Having said that, i just notice a colour copy of that performance is also on youtube.

  • This edition of TOTP from 29th Jan 1970, is a black and white print of a colour film. My understanding is that it is being or has been restored to colour. If you know where the colour copy of this performance on YouTube is, please share it with us. Thanks.

  • The whole show exists as 16mm b/w film recording (telerecording/kinescope), However, certain performances where retained for later shows or exported to other broadcasters.

This is why the Colour Recovery CR working group used this show as a reference copy, they could compare the restored sections with VT performances which where still extant.(see Dad' Army/Dr Who Planet Of the Daleks ep 3)

  • An episode of Dad's Army from Oct 1969 was transmitted on BBC2 last-year and restored to colour. With the five and surviving editions of Top Of The Pops from 1970, my understanding is two editions from July and October exist in colour, as the other three from January and February of that year, are being restored it's original to colour form from a 16mm b/w telerecording (right or wrong). I don't think the BBC will ever release them on DVD or transmit it on television.

  • I suspect the original colour copy was destroyed like a lot of old recordings were. Great upload :)

  • Shouldn't this be in colour? I thought BBC went to colour in 1968 or 1969.

  • It certainly should be in color. I don't know why they decided to broadcast these episodes in b&w.

  • @nyrainbow4 It might have been recorded in black & white as there was a technicians strike & several programmes at around that time were recorded in black & white on BBC 1 & 2. BBC had only transmitted colour programmes from 1967 (I think) & most households only had B&W TV sets, so it was no big deal.

  • @nyrainbow4

It was broadcast in colour - the BBC went colour in 1967, this is an black and white telerecording which was made after the original colour video tape was wiped which was a usual practice in the late 60's and early 70's.

  • @nyrainbow4 The reason some are in B & W is because in the 1960s the BBC would alternate TOTP between their London and Manchester studios.

If the broadcast was from Manchester then it would be in B & W, as many UK regional TV companies took their time in upgrading to full colour transmissions!

  • Yes it was made as a 625 (578i) PAL colour viderecording. This is a 16mm b/w telerecoding (film recording) copy.

Telerecording worked by pnting a modified cine camera syncronised to the frame rate/field rate of a b/w 6inch flat screen monitor, set bright recorded onto slow film

  • It WAS broadcast in COLOUR!!! BBC1 and ITV broadcast in colour from 15th November 1969. This copy exists as a film recoring. This however could and is being converted to colour as chroma dots exists in the film and can be decoded by a computer. (see Dad's Army)

  • @sansomdela Still great quality thanks for letting me relive happier days.

  • Great song thanks...his hair looks like mine if i dont cut it regular lol..
