@beatsandthings Not at all dude. In fact this is what he meant by saying you should alternate between the german and french grip when playing fast single strokes. The french grip utilizes the fingers rather than the wrist for power and speed, so you've pretty much got it dude.
@ThatOneTalentedKid are you kidding me, if you're a drummer then you're a retard. Jojo mayer is one of the greatest technical drummers out there right now! But congratulations you're the first person in history to accuse Jojo Mayer of speeding up his videos.
Does anyone know the name/brand/model of that sort of little drum head on top of the snare? Does it work with any snare? Please... the sound is AMAZING!
I've lost the count of the things I've learnt watching this dvd. But I'll watch it again and again. For me drums is like martial arts: repeat the movements again and again searching the perfection!
@blacktenebrarum "Kung Fu" - In Chinese, kung fu can also be used in contexts completely unrelated to martial arts, and refers colloquially to any individual accomplishment or skill cultivated through long and hard work. - from Wikipedia
@George7975 You use your thumb instead of the fingers when using trad grip. I hold onto the side of the snare with my little fingers when practising to make sure I isolate the thumb movement so the rest of my hand isn't assisting the movement. It works after a while!
@xfuckingtitsx fast snare rolls as he does, and put them into a solo. or you can just show off^^. great JOJO, and great DVD at all. its worth every cent!
Wanna know an even better technical drummer than Jojo Mayer? Then give this one a try: wwwDOTyoutubeDOTcom/watch?v=eu4_OQ91uL4 As incredible as Jojo is, he'll NEVER reach this miraculous level in his lifetime. No one will.
@Wosadude123 no. not trolling. i can see what you mean by the "finger technique" being awkward, but any drummer will know jojo mayers name so if a drummer saw "jojo mayer" followed by "finger technique" they would know its about a drum technique, not him showing how to pleasure girls. anyway, what are you doing on youtube looking for fingering lessons?
@dangerics, he covers it in these dvds...must have dvds for me: Jojo's, Frank Briggs, Thomas Lang, Tommy Igoe's Hands for a Lifetime, Virgil Donati's first one, and Bobby Rocks Metalmorphisis. These videos cover just about everything.
@tttmmmnnnttt second best? do you know how many drummers can play what neil peart plays blind folded with only two limbs instead of four? he was a great drummer for Rush, and I respect him for his accomplishments. go watch Virgil Donati or Marco Minnemann play, then tell me what you think. i respect your opinion, but i am just recommending some other drummers that have completely changed the drumming world since NP. cool?
@tttmmmnnnttt I NEVER said being faster was better, not once so learn how to read. Second, everyone has a right to an opinion which I clearly expressed in my statement. If you like him, great. I am not going to think someone is the "best" just because everyone else does. There really is no such thing as "the best" because its a subjective term. I dont give a shit about what modern drummer readers polls say, because I look directly at their playing. I like NP, but not as much as Virgil or Marco.
lol, if you think NP isnt the best drummer, why is he the hero of many famous drummers including mike portnoy?
i know, its your opinion if you dont like NP, but im just saying that he actually is the best drummer of all time, cause he is the first in 100 best drummers and he keeps winning first place in drummer awards...
@tttmmmnnnttt DUDE!! you seriously NEED to learn how to READ! I said I liked NP, but it is MY opinion that there are better drummers. I dont give a flying fuck about awards or readers polls, because they dont express MY opinion, only other peoples. If you like him, awesome. But dont just say that because you read some readers poll and completely base your opinion on that alone. If you base your opinions on what others think, then your just a sheep arent ya?
@tttmmmnnnttt dude i am not gonna argue about this anymore. all i wanted was for an NP fan to look at some other drummers that NP himself said were raising the bar of drumming. that was obviously too hard for you, so enjoy your little fan club and basing your opinions on what other people say. go back to your sheep herd now.
@kentsmedblom Yeah, I forget what it's called, but it's basically a skin and a stand that sits on top of his actual snare and makes every note more defined. it makes it sound a lot like a marching snare.
crap, i tried traditional, and it's really, really hard, well to me it is, but im sure at least some people have problems, and i wanna learn jojo's techniques and traditional so bad
ive tried this but i cant grip my stick like the guys doing this technique do (not talking bout traditional grip, but about gripping it so i van use the fingers properly)
At the one and two second mark of this clip, you can clearly see his index finger is not even on the stick. He's using a style tony williams uses. The stick is being leveraged between the thumb and wring finger, aided by ridiculous wrist rotation.
@ebonyice60 he's using his signature stick from vic firth: Swiss drummer Jojo Mayer pioneered and leads the recent trend of live breakbeat drumming with his band NERVE. Jojo's design is a 5A style stick‚ but with thicker and shorter dimensions. It provides a big feel and full sound without a lot of length.
@1Drummer88 It is not all about technique; at all. It's a balance between musicality and technique. You may be able to play singles really fast, but what good does that do you if you can't apply it musically?
@Kelavmeister have you ever seen or heard him play with a band? If not I suggest you do and you'll realize how stupid this comment is! Everything he shows here can be applied to any genre of music maybe you are jealous that you can't play a
@jrmsho@jrmsho First of all, calm down. There is really no reason to be getting this defensive over an opinion. He deleted his other statement, & left the most important one, gotta love his honesty!! way to go bareftjacky.............
moneyequalspower..........ummmm, his left hand is stationary cuz he's only demonstrating his right hand + different grips to try at this point in the vid. This dvd is 2 disc's long, trust me, he mastered the Moeller grip along time ago, along with all the other grips out there, & the new ones he's coming up w/. I just really like the fact that he mastered everything he could hands & feet, for the soul purpose of making good music, NOT to show off, gotta love that!! way to go Jojo!!
I was just noting the incredible speed he was using without using his fingers with his left hand. (A user said he was using the Moeller stroke and I was just simply telling him that he wasn't, note his retracted comment). I never said he doesn't know how to use the Moeller technique, and I never said he was showing off. Gotta love your ignorance!! Way to go jasont0815!!
Thanks for agreeing! I actually bought the DVD just recently, and you're right it's mostly fulcrum, but he actually has his thumb, not his fingers or wrist, trained to do all the work, as part of his "Most impact with the least amount of work" ideology. It's amazing.
i think this is the best drummming technique cause from most angles it looks like the sticks are moving by themselves or by magic or something cause you cant see his fingers... lmao
NO. Sorry. It is not. His left hand stays stationary. Watch ANY professional drummers tutorial on the moeller techniques and on their traditional grip left hand their two fingers are over the stick, thus making it a traditional grip. Jojo here, is NOT using the "traditional" traditional grip, and he is not using the Moeller technique, and he is certainly not using his arm to create any whip motion. Thanks for your input though.
@moneyequalspower. But the traditional grip consists of the thumb being on top which moves the stick, as the stick sits in the fulcrum, and the two fingers are on the side of the stick. And its called the traditional technique because when drums used to be carried on slings, people developed that technique, slanting the stick a little so it wouldn't hit the rim... In pipe bands, we carry the drum on a harness, but we slant the drum a little anyways for better sound.
Most of the time i play with my left hand in the german grip. But i like playing French when i do rolls an such, and i prefer not to use american. As for the cymbals i feel German allows me to play looser (sort of like Mitchell). IMO the German = loose, French = tight, American = w/e.
He's absolutely right about the little finger! I myself ignored it a bit for a while (can be seen in my videos), but lately I realized that using it relaxes the wrist in a certain way. (I am talking about my left hand, as I am a right-handed player, though I'm using a lot the left one a lot :)
i use a geman/moeller/some finger all in one is this considered bad?
beatsandthings 2 weeks ago

@moneyequalspower actually he was useing his fingers on the left hand he was useing the pointer finger
CHICKMAGNET66666 2 years ago
Actually no he wasn't, watch 1:01 very closely, his "pointer finger" is not manipulating the stick in any way.
By the way it's called an index finger.
Why does everyone keep questioning me?!??!
moneyequalspower 2 years ago
I have no idea, cos your right and it really was an interesting point you initially made!!! That is all fulcrum its incredible!
drummerkingmike 2 years ago
Thanks for agreeing! I actually bought the DVD just recently, and you're right it's mostly fulcrum, but he actually has his thumb, not his fingers or wrist, trained to do all the work, as part of his "Most impact with the least amount of work" ideology. It's amazing.

Damn I can't do that to save my life =o.

notapandathepanda 2 years ago 2
i think this is the best drummming technique cause from most angles it looks like the sticks are moving by themselves or by magic or something cause you cant see his fingers... lmao
MegXZilla 2 years ago
His left hand doesn't even utilize any fingers! it's all done by the grip at the fulcrum. Interesting.

NO. Sorry. Thanks for your input though.

true that, my bad.
no need to be a dick, there, guy.
bareftjacky 2 years ago

(I am talking about my left hand, as I am a right-handed player, though I'm using a lot the left one a lot :)

there is a "best" grip, it is whatever grip is best for what you are playing. that is the best grip.
