although I agree with you whole heartedly, there are times when you are dealing with stubborn people- possibly like your friend- that it is simply easier to agree to disagree rather than risk starting a serious argument, even if you *know* for an objective fat that you are right. some people will not accept or admit when they are incorrect.
Deep. Now can reality be different for some people as opposed to others? Somethings are fact and I agree on that. But some cases reality might be different for others. If anyone cares to discuss.
There was just a video posted where bunny McCarthy was pushing certain supplements. She actually said that if you have questions about dosage you could call your pediatrician, but they don't usually know anything, so you should call the lab that manufactures them. It is disgusting that people actually listen to her.
So apparently I shouldn't listen to a pediatrician who has studied science for years, but rather to a delusional playboy bunny...Some people actually buy into this.
:) Morsecode you are a pretty good speaker, and I have faced that situation multiple times. Some people just cant tell the difference between objective and subjective Ideas.
I have to disagree with you on the fact that where the stars are when you are born does have an effect on you. I'm completely sure that the effect is so slight that it not at all noticeable by the human eye, and probably not noticeable by even our most powerful detection devices. -- almost over character count--
The extremely small different amount of radiation absorption between someone born during the day, and someone born during the night, will have at least a small difference in cell count. XD
Lol, thanks for this video. It's so frustrating when you're using facts, and they just won't listen! I don't bother debating/arguing with my friends anymore because we all think we're right, and nobody ever listens to reason.
If you can agree to disagree on matters of belief, I don't understand why you couldn't do it w/your friend w/the autistic child. I don't see what makes a belief in autism being caused by vaccination any different than a belief the earth is 6k old. Neither of those opinions are based in scientific consensus using empirical studies, (which is the bases of your "beliefs").
Hi Morse: I half apologize to you. I rewatched the vid. You did catagorize autism in w/I think theistic beliefs, (which includes young earth). What still throws me is agreeing to disagree w/a deist. From a scientific/naturalistic position, (a Dawkin's view which I assumed you held} I don't see why you would make the exception there.
Because, being completely intellectually honest, some kind of god/being/thing that started things but has no impact on the universe beyond that could exist. There's zero evidence to support it, but if we're being honest we must accept the possibility, no matter how small. That is why we can agree to disagree.
No, I'm not a diest. When I don't agree to disagree, it's not over what I consider to be objective truth, rationality or fact. It's because I'm moved emotionally to let that person know that their particular belief on that subject somehow offends me. It's when an opinion outrages me that I won't agree to disagree. If it really doesn't matter on an emotional level I'll agree to disagree because that strikes me as a pragmatic way of dealing w/people.
It's respectful, and offers an oppurtunity to take another bite out of that apple down the road. I guess my point is there's nothing objective about where you draw your line either.
If you understand God to not be sentient, that makes you a pantheist, not a deist. A deist believes in a sentient God, just not one that personally interacts with us.
I agree with your point 100%, also on a side note as a father of an autistic son, I will say here and for the record that Jim Carry and Jenny McCarthy are full of crap and I wish they would shut the F**K up!
It's frustrating when people ignore the facts and hold to their opinion, and then expect another to "agree to disagree", as if their strongly held belief is as valid as the facts...
i've only heard someone say "lets agree to disagree" when either 1. they refuse to accept defeat, or 2. when they don't want to listen to any evidence contrary to their predisposed position

Very nice video!
I had this conversation with my girlfriend when she said "can't we just agree to disagree" about a topic that the evidence was clearly in my favor.
But, since i don't wanted to cause a fuzz and she had exam the next day i agreed to disagree......but that won't happend again ;)

The age of the earth is another thing that is backed up by actual facts. So it is on the same level as the autism question.

Do you understand a diestic god to be sentient?
owheydusoapsk 2 years ago
Are you a deist?
I don't understand a deist god to be anything. All I do is generalize the deist position from my limited knowledge. Specifics will alter my response.
