I bought the "false" Lipatti-LP in the 70-ies. And listened to it maybe a hundred times! I must say the similarities are amazing. (even in details.) It´s really hard to believe the false recording IS false! (though Czerny-Stefanska was great too. She won the first Chopin competition ever.) Even Lipatti´s wife thought the "false" recording was by her husband. And she would know wouldn't she? (in a letter she wrote me in 1975 she utters no doubt about any recording issued in his name.)
It seems that you are right. I just arrived here from an article at [usual web prefix+]
markainley;com/music/classical/lipatti/chopin_scandal;html. Replace the ;s with dots. Quote:
"When EMI reissued the recording in 1981, the BBC broadcast the record, and a listener wrote in noting its similarity with a Supraphon recording dating from the early 1950s featuring the distinguished Chopin pianist Halina Czerny-Stefanska. Tests by BBC and EMI revealed that the two recordings were identical."
I sometimes think Lipatti even looks like Chopin - yes??
How both in this movement and the slow movement of the F minor Concerto (which I think was actually wriiten before the E minor??)Chopin touches heaven and at such a young age!
The most beautiful interpretation, thanks so much to send this!!! He was always for me the greatest inspiration, each note is exceptionnal. What a soul!

Not actually played by Lipatti, however. Real performer was Halina Czerny-Stefanska. See wikipedia article on her.

Amazingly beautiful. Pure poetry, both Chopin and this interpretation.
Such a shame Dinu passed away so young.
This is mankind at its best.
