My theory is that they were going to make a game similar to this in the 80's, but it got scrapped before development started, and now they've went and dug up the old design docs and made the games dark void and dark void zero based on the concepts and ideas they came up with in the 80's.
The graphics are too good for it to have run on nes. There are too many simultaneous colors for the nes to handle, and the backgrounds are too detailed. In many nes games, the background would fade to black during boss fights because the bosses were too complicated for the nes to render in addition to the background, and many games, such as metroid and kidicarus, had black backgrounds the entire time. For me, and probably most nes owners, it is fairly obvious that this is not a lost nes game.
@Verazze How fun and challenging is the game ? Are the enemies varied enough ? (I mean not fighting the same two three enemies for three levels and hours o-o) ? How fun are the mini boss and boss battles ? How would you rate it out of 10 ? Thank you for answering :)
I noticed you can buy it at the 'Capcom Store'. Should I buy it from Capcom at 5 bucks or Steam? I would imagine if I buy it from the Capcom Store I won't have to deal with Steam DRM??
@Edel99 The Steam version comes with a 5-install SecuROM (for no apparent reason). I suspect all versions of the game have the SecuROM, but I'm just guessing.
@antisocialfatman SECUROM!!! I heard some people have problems once they download the latest SecuROM! I'll pass at the moment! I sure would like to see MegaMan 9 & 10 being ported over to the PC...
Fatman I noticed you said you've got a DS. If you enjoy incredibly well crafted simple throwback games like Dark Void Zero, I wholeheartedly suggest Giana Sisters DS, released only in Germany and Australia.
So glad this got a Steam release since I have no desire to upgrade my DS Lite. Its also nice to see Capcom release some retro titles besides Mega Man, especially since their better than most of their current gen efforts. Now if only Nintendo would make a new 2D Metroid game.
@antisocialfatman Oh I am looking forward to Other M, mostly because Team Ninja is just about the best pure action developer out there, but even if its a great action game I don't think it'll be a great Metroid game: see the difference? In all there are three truly great 2D Metroid games (Super, Fusion and the GBA remake of the original) which seems like a paltry number, especially when there have been that many Castevania games released within a span of a couple years.
@Kagemusha08 Actually no, I don't see the difference. All the footage of Other M that I've seen makes it look like a 2.5D version of Fusion (which I am actually playing for the first time right now on my DS).
Maybe Other M has a little bit more of an action focus, particularly with the FPS feature, but it seems just like classic Metroid to me. Just not pure 2D.
@antisocialfatman Something tells me that Team Ninja isn't going to be able to emulate the Metroidvania style very well. It goes against just about everything they do right. Maybe I'm just pessimistic and they'll be able to blend fast-paced action with some mild exploration elements, but I still would rather they just focus on Ninja Gaiden 3 and have Retro or an internal team at Nintendo handle Metroid.
@Kagemusha08 If it was just Team Ninja, I would totally agree (not that I actually know who they are), but there are 2 companies working on Other M - Team Ninja and an internal Nintendo studio responsible for Fusion (and possibly other Metroid games).
I have a feeling - a hope, at least - that the two teams will compliment each other very well.
this review would have benefited from not having a video accompanying it, cuz you're saying that it's a fun game, but the video says otherwise. this game looks booooooooooooooooooring!
it's in my wish list and i will probably be getting it in a few days... i've been craving this ever since i heard about it
oh and fatman, if you dont know why the NES era is so great... i recommend checking out a game called "Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril"... as it pretty much sums up all the NES megaman games and metroid all in one, cept you'll need an NES to play it..... so dont pirate!
@antisocialfatman Thank god i don't haft to stop my pre-order for crysis 2 (for pc hoity toity) well at least i hope it keeps it's originality (cysis 2 not dark void)
@retread01 I guess so. lol. I see no point in watching a review of a game that I'll never play due to lack of originality, graphics, gameplay, etc, when compared to well known excellent titles, such as Metroid or even Blaster Master.
Simply put, it's too late to catch the attention of anyone who may have considered playing the game. I would play epic classics, but I can't even play games like XCOM anymore. Beast in it's day and even up to a few years ago.

this game is a re-issue of the original, which came out before the newest game 'Dark Void'
sakavanagh97 3 months ago
@sakavanagh97 no, actually it is not a re-issue. "It was made as an April Fool's parody of the video game Dark Void".. :)

Do'h! I can't even pass the first area on the normal difficulty... I probably should go out and buy a decent gamepad for my PC one day.

I don't like 8-bit near as much as 16-bit. Over-stylized and perfected before games went to 3D.
