All cars depreciate horribly in the first few years. Even a car that "holds its value" will be worth about half what you paid for it in 5 years. All the cars he shows here are cheap econoboxes. They didn't cost a lot to begin with, and they ain't worth much after a few years.
not to sound like an ass, but you should realize that he means they depreciate more than most. Lets face it, not many cars since the days of the FSO Polonez depreciate to 1/2 value in 1 year.
@bullet50000 Yes, but on the other hand, depreciation is only a part of the overall cost of ownership. I own BMWs, and they don't depreciate much, the first few years, at least. However, the overall cost of ownership is 2-5 times many of the cars shown in this report. Not that I am trading the M Roadster for a Nissan Van anytime soon. But the cars he profiles could be appropriate and economical rides for some folks.
The report is just like any one of a number of "crap cars" types of articles - pick out some lame rides and then make fun of them. Picking apart the Vega or Chevette ain't hard to do. But funny thing, though, those are the types of cars people buy the most - the ones you see populating the highways. Then they go off to the crusher, unloved. We laugh at them, but they make up the bulk of the auto industry and the auto fleet.

@TahreyUK well this man is obviously a fool, just like you, for buyin a car for its looks and not mainly safety and reliability.

@gt4driftster No, I bought mine (eventually the Polo) on its safety, reliability & value. @gt4driftster You do seem to have completely missed what I was saying. The ARTICLE IN THE VIDEO is about image/enjoyment/depreciation - they actually state this.
It's NOT my own preference, which has stayed in the "cheap, solid, safe" end of the market (necessarily, because I'm a broke ass scrub, who needs reliable wheels for work)... Polos, Astras, etc. Recently a Megane, which has proven too fussy/tarty, but twas all I could afford in a rush.
@gt4driftster Incidentally I think you meant to say the Metro "wasn't any more dangerous than the 106 or Saxo". Those aren't cars that I'd put in my top 10 of 90s Hatchbacks I'd Happily Have A Crash In. Hell, the early Saxos are basically re-shelled AXs, down to the 3-bolt wheels. You hit a kerb too hard and it'll fall apart.
Clio, maybe not so bad, but still tinny. Give us something German, if it has to be that old.
I got a ford Scorpio 2.3 1997 (facelift) , it does 115mph in 4th gear and it still pulls in 5th
the back seats are big and comfortable for sex and with 18" alloys and big chunky tyres, everybody thinks your a gangster because they have never seen a car similar on the road. Yes Scorpios standard are very boring and ugly, but a bit of money spent on it is well spent money.
@tayfun1066 The Granada and Scorpio owners club certainly seemed thriving and plenty capable of having a good time when I was briefly at an all makes event in Billings a few years back... including quite a few blinged ones :-)
However that performance seems rather similar to or even somewhat less than what my 1.6 renault manages... 50% of the engine's being wasted somewhere...?
@TahreyUK its ford's plan to ruin your pocket, the 149bhp gets me a brilliant 41mpg on a downhill while a 40 miles journey costs me £15 in fuel. The original exhaust costs £400 (200 more then custom longlife) and a fuse for heater motor (or air con) costs £68! From Ford parts. But still I brought the car because it wasn't as mass produced like BMW or Mercedes-Benz and hate seeing any other car that looks like mine. Nearly all 97 saloons have gone. Every1will want 1 in 10years. If any is left.
@MrDionisis7 Remember this is the mid-90s Serena ... which I think, at the time, was the slowest passenger vehicle on sale in the UK, particularly the diesel one (I think the line about the dealers hating them may refer to having to use them as company transport...), a crown it didn't lose until the non-turbo 1.5D Kangoo came along... (or was it the Fiat Doblo? One or the other out-slugged the Serena). But for all that it didn't even have good economy.
Drove one for years in a row and it was one of the best cars I ever had.
(And been driving for 34 yrs)
Yes, it was slightly dull, but overhere in the Netherlands people don't care much for stylish cars. If you show up at a business presentation overhere in something stylish you are frowned upon as cavalier, inprudent, etc.
A black Audi A4 diesel or a grey Volvo S40 on LPG is the business ticket overhere. Perhaps also Mercedes, but then you have to be high ranked.
What does this guy had against Ford Motor Company? Everybody knows what the nameplate Escort means, and the responsable team behind the developement of the last Scorpio where very brave producing a car with a different face and the rear part that looks like an American car. Of course that contemporary Ford´s are a lot better. Also Volvo´s. Rover has gone and Nissan is a quite good brand.
@tonidmc Well, I've a base spec Escort Mk6 1.3L. Sure it's not the fastest or most powerful car in the world, but it's incredibly reliable and very cheap to run.
@kazimann thats right and I'm shore about that, I'm only saying that european magazines of the era said that the mk5 had poor performance in all the areas. rear live axle instead of mk4 independent suspension, cheaper plastics, and even worse engine performance, in fact an mk4 xr3i could achieve nearly the same times in acceleration as an mk5 130hp 16v xr3i.
@tonidmc Well, my Escort has the old Kent OHV 1.3L engine, which were only available on the base models. As I mentioned, they are very reliable and will go forever. The CVH engine on the other hand (which was the most popular engine in the Mk5 and 6, were indeed not particularly very good). They drank petrol and suffered badly from seized hydraulic tappets.
@kazimann yes, i know the problem with the hydraulic tappets, I have a 1988 Escort cabriolet ghia, but it wasn't too much problem if the little sealers were changed at the correct times and kms my car has 220.000km and run ok This engines perfomed little poorly on the mk5 and 6 due to more weight and emission systems but are not bad engines if properly maintained but of course the old kent engines are undestructible and very reliable ones. My father had an mk1 Fiesta and that was forever engine.
@tonidmc I've also an '82 Escort Mk3 (a restoration project, if you go into my channel you'll see a like to my Flickr page, there is pics of it in there somewhere), with the 1.3L CVH engine, and the tappets are well seized in it!
@kazimann yes, an american dream made in ireland! hehe thats was cool! Ijust marked you as a friend here, so we can talk and i could send you some pics
I've got the Nissan's twin sister, the Ford Maverick. It's great off road but it's not hugely reliable. Ah well, it's dead now so we've replaced it with an old Disco.
DEFECTIVE TOYOTA CAMRY SE. CORPORATE WILL NOT FIX CAR. Check out my vidio on toyota corporate refusing to fix a defective Toyota Camry Se power steering pump. toyotacameryse on youtube.com and on CNN.com toyota666. Please tell the world that Toyota will not fix my Camry SE 2011 modle. A new car whinning like this. Why Toyota? Why not just fix the car??
I had a h reg volvo 440 and managed to clock 125mph admittedly i did have trouble getting it into gear for a short while after but an hour or so after i turned the engine of i had no problems i loved that car and was sad to lose it after it was stolen and written off.
@macguy907 I will admit the cosworth is really nice. I suppose if you modify it enough, and upgrade anything and everything you can, an escort can be a great car, but the reality (at least here in california) is that I have never seen a modded escort. It is always used as a clunker here. Something you find for 1k and drive it till it runs out of the gas the previous owner left in it. Hm, maybe I should take this up. Mod out an escort.. it would be damn unique here!
@thisishellagay Of course, you're comparing the US Escort versus the Worldwide Escort. Try not to do that, same when comparing Mondeos with Contours. The differences are gigantic, and the US Escort has always been an abysmal car, compared to the UK/Worldwide Escort, which was always reliable.
Same should be said with the Focus. The US Focus sucks, specially the last version released on 2008 only in the US.
Irony with the Scorpio is Citroen restyled the Xzara and Xantia in the same style practically - yet people lapped 'em up. Still 0% finance is always helpful of course.
The Scorpio is an ugly bug and probably inspired by Americans. The Metro is a joke. The Serena is just a van with windows. My old man has a 440 and has been a good car, but I do find the design undesireable. Volvo could have done better, but half of it is Renault. :( The Escort cab is shite. The Terrano is just a Chelsea Shed. Some cars are just shit. Give me a BMW 320i. Something with class and low depreciation. At least a BMW makes you feel good about yourself.
I like Quentin Willson, but i think most of his comments were his opinions......I had a Metro as a second car in the late nineties and it handled brilliantly and certainly did not sway all over the road.......The Escorts from that era tended to rust badly, but the "new shape" Escort from late 90 till late 92 when it was heavily revised was worse that the Mk 3/4.
@MyChemicalJasper For thr first - 440 ain't Volvo. This is a English desing Dutch manufactured French car, which is by some cruel mishap has name Volvo on it.
440 and realible? Well here could be two reasons. You drive insanely short distances or You car is just an expection in rule.
@MyChemicalJasper483 But he was right - it lost half it's value in less than two years...!!! Actually, looking back from today, Quentin was every bit of right in all his statements about these cars...! ;o)
im not sure about any of what he said... like when peter listened to that british news on radio...

Why they say the Serena is bad. It's very reliable and it is a good people carrier!
MrDionisis7 8 months ago
@MrDionisis7 Remember this is the mid-90s Serena ... which I think, at the time, was the slowest passenger vehicle on sale in the UK, particularly the diesel one (I think the line about the dealers hating them may refer to having to use them as company transport...), a crown it didn't lose until the non-turbo 1.5D Kangoo came along... (or was it the Fiat Doblo? One or the other out-slugged the Serena). But for all that it didn't even have good economy.

Nothing wrong with a Volvo 440.

Rover has gone and Nissan is a quite good brand.

the mk 5 Escorts were totally shit
tonidmc 9 months ago
@tonidmc Well, I've a base spec Escort Mk6 1.3L. Sure it's not the fastest or most powerful car in the world, but it's incredibly reliable and very cheap to run.
kazimann 9 months ago
@kazimann thats right and I'm shore about that, I'm only saying that european magazines of the era said that the mk5 had poor performance in all the areas. rear live axle instead of mk4 independent suspension, cheaper plastics, and even worse engine performance, in fact an mk4 xr3i could achieve nearly the same times in acceleration as an mk5 130hp 16v xr3i.
tonidmc 9 months ago
@tonidmc Well, my Escort has the old Kent OHV 1.3L engine, which were only available on the base models. As I mentioned, they are very reliable and will go forever. The CVH engine on the other hand (which was the most popular engine in the Mk5 and 6, were indeed not particularly very good). They drank petrol and suffered badly from seized hydraulic tappets.
kazimann 9 months ago
@kazimann yes, i know the problem with the hydraulic tappets, I have a 1988 Escort cabriolet ghia, but it wasn't too much problem if the little sealers were changed at the correct times and kms my car has 220.000km and run ok This engines perfomed little poorly on the mk5 and 6 due to more weight and emission systems but are not bad engines if properly maintained but of course the old kent engines are undestructible and very reliable ones. My father had an mk1 Fiesta and that was forever engine.
tonidmc 9 months ago
@tonidmc I've also an '82 Escort Mk3 (a restoration project, if you go into my channel you'll see a like to my Flickr page, there is pics of it in there somewhere), with the 1.3L CVH engine, and the tappets are well seized in it!

I've got the Nissan's twin sister, the Ford Maverick. It's great off road but it's not hugely reliable. Ah well, it's dead now so we've replaced it with an old Disco.

Mod out an escort.. it would be damn unique here!
thisishellagay 11 months ago
@thisishellagay Of course, you're comparing the US Escort versus the Worldwide Escort. Try not to do that, same when comparing Mondeos with Contours. The differences are gigantic, and the US Escort has always been an abysmal car, compared to the UK/Worldwide Escort, which was always reliable.
Same should be said with the Focus. The US Focus sucks, specially the last version released on 2008 only in the US.
JackBandicootsBunker 10 months ago
@macguy907 Escorts are absolutely terrible things! They are abominations!

Irony with the Scorpio is Citroen restyled the Xzara and Xantia in the same style practically - yet people lapped 'em up. Still 0% finance is always helpful of course.

Oli92Technik 1 year ago
