  • Happy 65 Birthday

  • Is that the pedophile Michael Jackson introducing the song ?

  • @jamo387 i think its actually cher

  • @RussianDrummer92 Lennon needs only one line to make a song awesomely cool!

  • Great commentary on the pitfalls of fame. Lennon would certainly know about that!! Lots of music stars just can't handle it. The pressure must be intense!!

  • He is the father monster!!!!!!

  • Bowie = Rock N Roll royalty

  • Watch the interviews with Dick Cavett. Appears he did a big ole' "BUMP!" of the really good shit...it's all he can do to contain himself! I'm thinking Cavett may have did a bit himself...kleenex sitting on the table really!?! Sniffling all around no one touches the kleenex!!! Hysterical....

  • @BatMac420

    :O

  • YOU BET YOUR ASS INCREDIBLE !

  • LOVE FAME

  • he looks totally strung out! Take it this was at the height of his lost drug years.

  • I was in 4th grade when this song came out. It was my first favorite song!

  • Before I knew what he looked like, I thought he was black

  • @estyl10l - I know right, listening to it, you'd think so right..

  • @cocoko7

He is an alien rock star! O.o

  • love his strange

  • Isn't it funny how this song is still relevant even today? :)

  • What year was this and where was it performed??

  • If there was ever an example of american inability to understand irony is has to be Bowie's Thin White Duke years. Seems so obvious that the whole point was to record the most souless soul possible as a comment on commeralism yet you stills ee those yuears ragged on by people thinking he was serious.

  • @moreorless87 Interesting perspective, although I don't agree that there was irony behind his work. There's something very powerful in his Ice-cold Soul, but I believe there was a lot of sincerity and emotion underneath it all. Young Americans (the song, not the album) I think is the best example of that.

  • @freegelato Yeah I agree there was sincerity behind much of the work of this era but I think the choice of the highly processed "plastic soul" sound was very deliberate. Fame is afterall a song decrying the nasty side of "fame" so what better way to get that across than a nasty version of the music closely assocated with fame in that era?

  • He is the singing Pronce Charles

  • @armstma You are right. Come on we can say many things about David Bowie the major word is one "******GOD******"

  • incredible thats all that is needed to say abouth this musical genius right here, i really miss real muscians man todays shit is not right its still some holding on but this will never be done again

  • Soul and funk, wrapped up all in this rock beat... which is, David Bowie.

  • @lilybaytoday aka Fusion =))

  • This clip was from The Cher Show I think? You can tell he's a little "refreshed" but he looks amazing, and still sounds so. Somehow cruel when you think how ill he was at the time. We are so lucky to have him, then, and now.

  • I miss John Lennon

  • @keeljoy247 Watch MrStevieRiks, you,ll get them both;-) and it,s both him and singing live, incredible!!!

  • i love playing this on guitar hero 5:)

  • why does david bowie always look, like, perfect? it's not human.

  • Just saw this on Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America. Love the song.

  • Bowie was cool in this guise (but he always is anyway!) and he made a good stab at the whole soul/funk thing in these years - Young Americans & Station to Station

  • Max Headroom, haven,t heard that in a long time ;-)

  • Well, the song makes more sense to me now. Lennon was so caustic about fame and success--biting the hand that fed him, too much, apparently.

  • What sort of insinuation were you making there with "too much"?

  • That he was bitter and isolated himself from people for years. Quite the bastard, by most accounts.

It had nothing to do with his being shot, obviously.

  • I agreed with your assessment, although the "too much" bit did seem to insinuate that Lennon got himself killed.

People could argue for hours as to what the reason for THAT was, though.

    Thanks for clarifying.

  • What's the source of this clip? Sounds like Dinah Shore?

  • Cher

  • It's actually SOUL TRAIN a kindao TOP OF the POPS FOR THE HUGE soul music market in USA , Bowie was the first white soul boy ever to appear on it. Quite and accolde

  • dis not da soul train peformance, soul train one was mimed dis is actually live!

  • @alleycatgholston Yes,again it's Cher.

  • what's with all the "da" and "dis"? are you five years old?

  • no,dis is just how i talk on oline, to be less formal. u dont have 2 b so rude about it gawd!

  • i can only imagine what an incredibly painful ordeal it would be to converse with you in person. i sincerely hope that you get eaten alive slowly by a walrus.

  • "walrus"?! dats like so freakin stupid! lol

  • you really are a moron. i wish a thousand misfortunes upon you and all your loved ones.

  • look, i havent sad one rude thing 2 u in all dis, u messed with me! get a life! lol

  • ha, no way man... you started it.

  • @alleycatgholston you suck

  • @mikecappa

wat is with u ppl! why da heck r u botherin me!? get a life! losers! lol

  • @alleycatgholston it's not stupid. It's basic knowledge. A classic The Beatles song by John Lennon is titled "I am The Walrus" It's a praise for surrealism.

  • @PieniPervoHiiri

no! dat idiot was tryna wish a walrus would swallo me whole! just a stupid corny way to wish death upon me! i see no praise in that statement! lol

  • @PerennialLucidity OMG the person who started that internet "slang" should be shot in the face! :X

  • and elton john was da first white artist on soul train!

  • I sure hope so!

  • Not under rated was no 1 in US hot 100, the first number of bowie in US.

  • pinky next friday lol

  • yeah so oldschool

  • he actually ends the song saying

    'feeling so gay' ;-)

  • Sheer musical genius. Absolute sheer musical genius here. : )

  • ...mmf <3

  • To Donald Farquar:

What utter drivel. You judge how well records sell as a marker of greatness? Enjoy your Britney Spears collection then. Lennon achieved his immortality when he penned some of the greatest songs of all time, stuff like Across the Universe so obviously influenced Bowie that it's unreal.

Without Lennon, 70s Bowie would never existed as it did. Lennon co-wrote this song for christ's sake.

Bowie is brilliant, but has never been consistent, and he's definitely not above criticism

  • LENON DID NOT CO-WRITE THIS SONG. Pleaes check breakinglass77's comment below which is correct.

  • John Lennon *did* contribute in writing this song,& he sang in the backing vocals & you can clearly hear his unique beautiful voice,& he played guitar on it too as he did after David Bowie asked him to on David's version of John's great Across The Universe. Look it up on google.

  • Oh please John was doing great before he got shot.People swarm to buy records after anyone famous dies how talented they are has nothing to do with it.

  • To donaldfarquar: That's absolute rubbish. Lennon's first album is a work of art. Imagine, the second one, sold millions and the title track is one of the best-known songs in the world. Whatever Gets You Thru The Night, Give Peace A Chance, Stand By Me, etc. were all massive hits the world over. Obviously you haven't got the slightest idea of what you're saying. And apart from sales, Lennon was a genius who changed the course of music forever. Being shot in the back is an excuse? You're not well

  • Not what i said. I said no one would have heard it as no one was buying it. It was shit because it was shit, so nobody bought it.

To kidcalabria - they sold millions after he got shot you tool, which is what i said. They got panned when he was alive and nobody bought them because the were shit.

  • Imagine, Whatever, Stand By Me sold millions when they came out. Everybody who was around remembers that. You obviously were not, and don't even have the sense to check the Billboard's charts to see that you're talking rubbish. All the things you wrote are wrong and inexcusable. How old are you? Grow up

  • Comment removed

  • donaldfarquar, you shouldn't judge how good Lennon's music was by how well it sold. That's purely marketing. Look at the Jonas Bros. Is the music good? God no! Does it sell? By the millions!

Also, are you suggesting that Lennon wouldn't be recognized today if he hadn't been shot? If so that is absolutely incorrect. Look at the other Beatles!

  • Did you even read my comment? Also, mabye in america you only buy things because that are advertised down your throat. Over here however the good music tends to sell pretty well on its own.

  • We'll I'm not American for starters. Also, for someone who asks "did you even read my comment?", you didn't seem to read mine considering your assumption that I buy into advertisement. Besides, wherever you are from, I'm sure there are people who disagree with you when you say the good music sells.

Let me put it into Bowie perspective. Have Bowie's 90s and beyond albums sold very well compared to his earlier ones? Not at all but we both know that they weren't absolute crap.

  • Do apologize and Totally agree, bowie did have nearly 20 years of solo gold though. I don't think many could top that.

  • i see coke

  • The main guitar riff of this song is lifted from an old song called "Footstompin' " which Bowie covered around the same time. Lennon's only contribution was the first three opening chords.

  • wow, such a sad response to a gr8 song! all following should stay there

  • I hope Adam doesnt ruin this song by screaming everything

  • He didn't, just check out the videos!

  • SO COOOOL!

  • Brilliantly done...

  • Me too!

  • I soooo cant wait to hear adam do this song on the amercan idol live tour!

  • Comment removed

  • This song was written by John Lennon, amazing.

  • Co-written with Bowie.

  • Yeah, but if you know about music this sounds very Lennon, and David was a great artist but John was a musicla genius, he knew how to write a song in every songwriter style.

  • Your right it's definitely got Lennon's prints on it, but I'd have to say that Bowie is the equal of Lennon musically, perhaps even greater. Let's not forget that Bowie achieved all he has singlehandedly, ok, he's worked with good musicians and producers, but generally speaking, he's flown solo. Lennon had the melodic powerhouse McCartney behind him. Lennon was a poetic genius for sure, but Bowie's legacy will be greater in the fullness of time , trust me.

  • At the time of their collaboration Lennon was definitely the master and Bowie, the apt apprentice. However, Bowie will eclipse all except 'Elvis' and 'The Beatles'. Why? Because Elvis was the first, and The Beatles were the greatest. Lennon's legacy is inextricably linked with that of The Beatles, but he just hasn't got the solo pulling power of say Jackson, Sinatra, Elvis or Madonna. Bowie has both artistic heft and Iconic magnetism.

  • Weel, it's obvious that you're a Bowie's fan, in my eyes Bowie was great as an artist, and he was a good singer, but Lennon is a superior musician, by far, to me.

  • Heh, yeah I know, I guess I'm hardly an unbiased party. I guess it will always boil down to personal preference. Don't get me wrong though I do have a huge admiration for John Lennon, and I'm well aware that Bowie owes a huge artistic debt to him. He put intellectualism firmly in the realm of Popular music. I think we can both agree that these two are musical giants and always will be.

  • David Bowie is the man who sold the world :)

  • And Lennon helped us all Imagine;)

  • i think that the fact that he was a solo artist almost made him more of an icon. not to mention the otherworldly persona

  • ''...someone like BOWIE??!''- Are you high?

I'm not gonna bash Lennon. I like him. He was very, very good. But Bowie is Ubermenschian in his greatness. I could give you a hundred reasons why Bowie is the superior of the two. I won;t. Suffice it to say that Bowie has achieved something unique.

Do you understand just how Important Bowie is? He's Elvis important. He's Beatles important.

He's ingenious, interesting, ice-cool and very, very well dressed.

    The man is immortal.

  • ok, I'm not saying Bowie is bad, its just that to me, they're not on the same musical caliber.

  • We'll have to agree to disagree.

I think it's important to note however that this song stands testament to the fact that they obviously admired each other hugely and that each man saw something of himself in the other. I do know however that popular music would be a whole lot poorer without either of them.

  • @Auenaura there;s no way in hell bowie is the greater out he and lennon. That's just crazy talk. Seriously. Bowie would even admit that.

Bowie has some hit songs but they don't compare to the songs Lennon wrote, not to mention Lennon became a cultural icon apart from his music for his activism.

  • @ValisX David Bowies the Best bitch please

  • @ValisX fuck his activism. i bet Bowie made better love to the ladies, so they are even on the non-music stuff

  • Bowie is awesome! Adam Lambert will be doing a Bowie trilogy on the A.I. tour. David will be proud of him. This is one of the songs :-)

  • Bowie will not be proud of him. If you think he will, then you don't understand Bowie or his music.

  • Adam was on 20/20 last night & they showed a bit where he is rehearsing for the upcoming AI tour. One of the songs he sings is this.

  • Delicious................

  • This is AMAZING! I adooooore the whole "Thin White Duke" period. THis is where he looked THE hottest. BRILLIANT * David sounds absolutely fantastic here, all live vocals!

Everything about this is 1:58 to 2:03 vocally, KILLS me. WOW +
