Oh Man! I was getting out of "A" school in the 80's and wanted so badly to get into a "Whale" (A-3) squadron - no such luck though - I got the "Skypig" (A-6) instead (but they were alright planes to work on too). Also, the ironic thing (regarding the comment about taxes and funding) is that in the 80's, the Navy was still using many Vietnam - era aircraft (A-3, RF-8, A-6, A-7, H-3), so it's not like we had all the "newest" equipment in the world - we just kept "updating" what we had.

Two really great songs. Bob got real and sang his heart out and then fame and fortune came .. so that is so cool. Nothing is wrong with wanting it Bob but how about sending some my way since you don't need it all ... what a great llne "he'll never make any enemies enemies..." Well the whole song beautiful loser is just chock full of great lyrics. Wish I could see the stage performance .. Nice organ solo too.
allthose in the service...THANK YOU... because of You...i can sit in my home and listen to ROCK N ROLL and smoke weed and befree,,,,God speed home and many many many...kudos and thanks..peace i pray
im a bad bob seger fan love it all there is no favorite song for me i listen to this music it takes me back in the day no music could ever measure up to the good old time rock n roll
The good old A3D Skywarrior, a.k.a. "The Whale"...A3D stands for "All 3 Dead", since the three-man crew had no ejection seats and if it crashed, they had no escape. (LOL, it doesn't REALLY stand for that, so Skywarrior fans, pls don't kill me!). I'm no ejection-seat expert, but this version (an electronic recon variant) MAY have them. Those seats are awful bulky looking. And it looks like there is more than 3 crew...4 ECMO seats, 1 pilot, and 2 jump-seats. I doubt the jump-seats were often used.
I don't care what happened up until now on this post, but these Bob Seger songs are from Live Bullet, recorded at Cobo Hall Detroit September 1975 song #2 Travelin' Man 4:53 leading with no break right into #3, Beautiful Loser 4:00 Nice video!
hey FAGGET how about you know what the fuck your talking about before u put in your 2 cents cause he changed it to beautiful loser after he relized it was the wrong song so shut your mouth STILL A GREAT SONG
these whales should be nice aircraft. most of the early jet designs' service life is not much. considering that a-3s designed at 1949 and activly used until 1990s, 40 years of active service is pretty succeful I think. but they are really huge for cacrrier operations.
Whales had three exits, many believe there was only one way out. Side, top, and bottom, the side was an explosive actuated door. They also had many configurations such as tankers, bombers, and the last of the carrier whales were EA-3B Reconnaissance birds. Many thought we carried the mail which always made me laugh, not knowing what our real mission was.
Looking at the cockpit of what most people would assume is a flight deck with dual flight controls, we are reminded about the US Navy's policy on more than one flyer trying to land an airplane on a carrier deck.
Yikes, that cockpit interior looks like the controls of a Ford Model-T. Not hating on it but they are oooold. Non idiot proof Naval Aircraft which required real skills, and balls.
ijet, the EA-3B was before my time but in the 80's on the Saratoga (CV-60) we had the KA-6 tanker version of the EA-6 Prowler. They also used A-7 Maneaters loaded with wing tanks.
imanazhole, I don't care what yer flyin', carrier landings take a pair of big brass ones. My asshole used to pucker just watching a screwtop coming in sideways...
@GlowingBentley - I know it's a trivial point, but the KA-6 is NOT a version of the EA-6. The KA-6 and the EA-6 are both derived from the A-6 Intruder...the EA is quite heavily modified, actually, with a longer fuselage and four seats. Maybe you already know that...I'm just nit-picking!
@ijetskilc - "aren't these the tankers that fly off the navys carriers?"...no, not exactly. They use a different version of the same aricraft as the KA-3D (I believe that's what it's called), but it's not really the "same" airplane. The EA-3D is a pretty specialized plane...that's what all that stone-age electronic stuff in the back is for. I doubt there is much in the back of a "K" tanker. Maybe a "Refueling Officer", if there is such a thing. Just a guess. =)
@colkelley- "awful lonely in the belly of an ERA"? I thought there was like 2-3 ECMO's and 1 pilot in these things? Or were you just not allowed to talk? I always wonder about the details...sorry. LOL. =P
"Double Nuts" was number "00" and was the VIP plane that VQ-1 used to ferry VIPs to the carrier amoung other things. It had a pretty blue interior. I was in VQ-1 from 1967 to 1970. Great memories.

@VQ1whales-"007"? Is that another EA-3 in this squadron? This plane is "005", right? I never realized that the mechanics and ground crew were assigned to one specific plane. I knew they did that in WWII...I remember reading that the ground crew were considered to "own" the plane, they just "let" the pilot fly it! =) Sometimes I seriously consider joining the Navy...do you get to choose a job as a flight mechanic, or do they assign you a job? I can't fly (glasses), but I'd love to work on planes.
Sorry, I was Hosed that night.."Life on the edge".... still nice to see you all jags hanging in there with the memories of hard ass work to keep'em in the the air. "The way we did" if you know what i mean?????????? LOL
I watched as one crashed landed on the Saratoga when the front landing gear collapsed. The only exit is under the plane behind the front landing strut so there was no way out. Thank God it didn't catch fire.
@VulcanBikeWizard - I think I saw a video of the same incident that you're talking about (here on YouTube, of course!(=). An A3D comes in for a carrier landing and looses it's nosegear. The pilot is on the fucking BALL, and takes off again. They have all the F3H fighters, etc land, and raise the barrier. The pilot does a BEAUTIFUL landing right into the net, just dents the intake a little when 2 straps catch across it. Forget the "Miracle of the Hudson"...Naval Aviation, baby!
@justforever96 The plane actually caught the wire and the nose gear collapsed, the crew were trapped inside, we scrambled for fire hoses and sprayed AFFF, the pilot got out with a large wet stain, no shame there.
@VulcanBikeWizard Okay, so different incident then. But still intense! I was just thinking of how the crew exits while watching this video. I was thinking of going and watching that video again to see how the crew exited, since the nose gear was gone, but they got out of the plane as soon as it stopped. Obviously it wasn't through the nose-gear hatch! I read someone comment the other day saying that there's actually 3 escape hatches, for emergencies. I dunno if the main door counts as one of em.
Nice to see EA-3's up close. I remember getting to sit in the cockpits of VQ-2's EA-3 and EP-3E's when I was younger and going to school at DGF for career day. Have nothing but good memories of Spain. Thanks for posting this.
