  • Put it this way, Howard plays defense really well. Bill Russell LITERALLY INVENTED how centres play defense. Good as guys like dwight are at it,fact is nobody since has done it as well as bill russell

  • Those who say D12 would dominate him OBVIOUSLY haven't seen Russell dominate Wilt.

  • @BNS224 highest jumpet but the crossover existed we will of your right cuz a rumer is going bill russel might return the nba

  • overrated

  • This was beautiful

  • Bill Russel couldn't defend today's centers, Dwight Howard would dunk on him all day, Yao Ming would shoot over him without even jumping and shaq would just do whatever he wanted with him

  • @720Slam Dude Russell was the 7th best high jumper in the world coming out of college and could run the 880 in under 2 minutes. Wilt was much more of threat (faster, stronger, more skilled) than any of the 3 u mentioned and Russell gave Wilt fits. Shaq and Yao would not be able to hang with the fast paced game of the 60's and Dwight cannot even stand to be touched and he is a big man. Russell would of easily got into his head. Russell was the Sun Tzu (Art of war) of basketball.

  • @BNS224 He was faster for sure, but stronger than shaq and dwight? Definetely not more skilled either, look at the competition. It's good but i saw some players on this that were not even doing proper layups that even muggsy bogues would block. Wilt was a 7 foot plus player playing against much smaller opposition. They are both great players but would not do as good with the quality of players in today's game.

  • @720Slam Wilt used to work out with Schwarznegger and could bench around 450. He was much more skilled than Shaq and Dwight. Wilt hated being called great due to size so he developed the fadeaway and would even go out of his way to shoot fadeaways. Shaq's main move was a borderline offensive foul finished with a dunk. Dwight is starting to develop on O but not dominant. Wilt also played against Hall of Famers nearly every night due to all the talent being condensed into a 12 to 14 team league.

  • @BNS224 They are hall of famers in their day, i don't see how you can hink he is more skilled than shaq and dwight.

  • @720Slam dude fuck u

  • @SeanYves09 i think we finished this conversation like over a week ago so stfu dumb ass

  • @BNS224 Amen!!!

  • @720Slam Seriously?! Centers nowadays will eat DUST if they're playing in BILL RUSSELL'S PRIME IN 60's

  • @The19paul68 nah the other players in this era were just shit other than wilt and russel

  • @720Slam You don't much do you?

  • another #6 will have more rings than him

  • @jayjoetube14 Surely you can't be serious. James has zero rings after 8 years. He'll be 27 years old this season (if there is a season). Russell won 11 in 13 years. James won't even play another 11 years, and he sure won't have a ring each season he does play.

  • @mrjahgreen

    I'm not referring to James.

  • @jayjoetube14 That's cool--then who are we talking about?

  • Ok so he was playing back then and they didnt think to RECORD blocks?!?!?!?!

  • wow this video is great.

  • celtic owes him BIG TIME

  • How tall was he?

  • @SeanYves09 206 cm

  • @Th3Mp5M4n nah i checked on Google he is 208 cm, and when he stands next to kevin garnett (211cm) he is just a lilte bit shorter

  • @SeanYves09 I found that on Wikipedia, anyway I don't think those heights are very reliable, every guard is 198cm or 196cm (Kobe Bryant/Marco Belinelli), every play-guard is 183cm or 191cm (Allen Iverson/Russell Westbrook), every forward is 203cm or 201cm (Carmelo Anthony/Scottie Pippen)...I think they're approximate.

  • If he were playing in today's game, he'd have access to modern training and fitness resources, and with those ^ skills, how could you say he wouldn't be effective? He'd invite the whole NBA to the BIll Russell BLOCK PARTY!!!

  • man you cant even compare big ben to bill . i maybe scoring style is maybe the same but the rebounds.20 plus a year and i hear his blockshot average i close to 10 per game.come in if comparison is ben wallace its way to far

  • A Time when Basketball WAS A WORK OF ART.

Father of Greatness Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Michael Jordan will ALWAYS be the 3 Gods of Basketball.

  • Bill Russell would be a poor man's Ben Wallace in today's league

  • you never see a player that blocks the shot and gets the rebound instead of hitting it to the crowd like vollyball. This is basketball right here, and the only player/coach to win 11 rings as a player and a coach.

  • Excellent video

  • 1Jordan 2Russell 3 Kareem 4Magic 5Bird 6Wilt 7Duncan 8West 9Kobe 10Oscar 11Shaq 12Olijuwon 13Moses Malone 14Pettit 15Baylor 16LeBron 17Havlicek 18Dr J 19Barkley 20Isiah 21Karl Malone 22Cousy 23KG 24Stockton 25Barry 26Pippen 27Dirk 28Wade 29Robinson 30Frazier

would like some feedback both +ve and -ve Always have a hard time picking between Kareem and Russell so would like to know reasons why one is better than the other

  • @dusttaker um no Russell 1st and then jordan.

  • @dusttaker Russell is the greatest champion ever in basketball, but Kareem's sky hook is the greatest offensive weapon ever seen in the history of the game. When you're ranking the two, it's all about whether you think championships or stats are more important.

  • Comment removed

  • Half this video was Russell saying, "You can't have that!"

  • Greatest basketball center of all time. He didnt care about all those worthless stats Wilt was putting up, he only cared about winning. I'm pretty sure there is one stat he likes. Russel's rings:11. Wilts:2. 'Nuff said.

  • @wizboy211 Wilt was the greatest individual player ever, Russell the greatest winner, colective player, Jordan was a mixture between the both, and Jabbar was pretty good too, also Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Oscar Robertson. Those are the greatest.

  • @PhillyDippy5 Russell was the greatest player though. Not only winner. Being a great player includes winning, leadership, and willingness to be the ultimate team player. Jordan is number two on the list b/c it took him a while to exemplify leadership and unselfishness. I mean Bill willed his team to championships... 11....... let's not forget back to back championships as player coach and going out defeating his ultimate rivals in west baylor and CHAMBERLAIN

  • @PhillyDippy5 Jordan was greates ever, Wilts not in my top 5. You know who are? 5.Magic 4. Larry 3. Kareem 2. Russell 1. Jordan. the only reason I have russell at 2 is because he has 11 rings. ELEVEN. wilt has 2, and jerry west pretty much gave him one. Wilt was 7'2 playing everynight against 6'5 or 6'6 centers, then there was russell. russell shut him down ONLY in the 4th so he russell would win. wilt was crazed bout stats thats why he has 2 and russell has 11. But Jordan is best of all time.

  • i like how the second top comment only has three votes

  • how many rings?

  • best player of all time. 11 titles. The best player on the team and it's a team game!!

  • @miamigreyhound Absurd to call him the best player of all time. Great player, yes, but Top-10, not more.

  • Maybe the smartest man to play the game, too. And incredibly gracious. I met him when he gave a keynote address at a conference I attended. Afterward, he stood there for over two hours talking to people. And they were real conversations where he made you feel like he was interested in meeting you.

  • he transform a basketball game in a simple game when he says 10 players ,2 baskets, one basketball,i just love his comments ..(sorry my english i am BR)

  • Greatest defensive player ever!!!!

  • young big men could (and should) learn something from Russell. When you block a shot, keeping the ball in play helps your team more than throwing it out of bounds and trying to show off for fans and ESPN. notice how all of his blocks lead to fast breaks. that's a 4 point swing, and that's part of the reason they won 11 titles while he was playing.

  • isn't this the guy who they said was BETTER than michael jordan?

  • @OompaLoompa211 Bill russell NBA RINGS 11> Jordan 6 nba rings

  • it kills me how young i am because i can't see these guys play and the excitment .. beast ever

  • Why can't bill russell score? The reason: he is a natural power forward playing out of his position as a center. If Jordan played center do you think that he can score at will? So why didn't Celtics help him with another big man to play center so that he can now score as a power forward? Because Celtics played a run&gun system and Red believed that Russell can handled the bigger centers alone. FG% in college is 52%, although in nba is mere 40% because he was guarded by centers much taller.

  • @thegreatestchallenge Russell said in an interview that he didn't shoot because he didn't have to. His team was great.

  • I shed tears of basketball when i watch this

  • @WaTcHMeMJThAtHo u not the only one

  • greatest winner of all time!!!

  • Thanks for sending me this one!!

  • Ya sure he won 11 titles when there was 5 teams in the league !!!

  • @Fralick11 your comment made me laugh.

  • @Fralick11 Well... it's not like all teams have a real chance of winning at title in today's NBA. So the number of teams doesn't really make a difference. I think it's really the teams who can win that have to be counted.

  • @Fralick11 you should learn more about basketball...he won 11 titles battling with Wilt Chamberlain, who spits on probablly all the centers in the league today. And there were about 15 20 teams back then. That does not make it easier at all. It means all the teams are stacked...much harder for your team to dominate for even 2 or 3 years....he did it for his whole 13 years career

  • the best of best so far in the nba dont belief what jordan one 6 times he won 11 times

  • Sick song!

  • does anyone know where i could buy a russel jersey?

  • @MJRiley878 Amazon.com

  • Amazing Video of the most Amazing man in the game of basketball. Russell will no doubt be the all time greatest of the game of basketball.

  • @punnyjunior.. Its the other way around. He won 9 as player and 2 as coach. Within the 9 they won 8 in a row! !

  • @Haroldbucks .... Neither of you are correct, he won 11 as a player, including 2 he won as player/coach of the Celtics.

  • he only won 2 rings while he was player and 9 rings while he was coach

  • what did he say @ the end of the video?

  • 2:35 where's the D?

  • Truly one of the greats, no doubt about it.

  • def better than wilt. smaller and still managed to beat wilt everytime

  • Only 56 thousand views? This is the real Greatest player of all-times if you lookin at rings and someone who improved their teammates, everywere this guy went he won since college. Even when Cousy left he was still winning, learn your history Jordan fanatics.

  • Haha music from Chrono Cross!

  • you can all diss him but i will tell you something about bill russel

    "10 fingers, 11 rings" !

  • Comment removed

  • Ive seen Shaqtus so im going to argue that statement

  • He is not the best, top 10 but not the best Jordan or Wilt is.

  • @lebron23toogood

Russell is the greatest player of all time. Whats the ultimate goal for an NBA player? Win championships.

  • @gip13g And he's better than Wilt.

  • Bill Russel is the best NBA Player!

  • Best Player of All Time..........

  • @Akademicdalabel i would have to agree...Michael jordan was good but he had an all-star cast around him to help him win 6 championships...Bill Russell was the greatest to me because he had 11 championships without an all star cast around him 2 NCAA championships & an Olympic Gold Metal...i love this guy and i grew up in the Jordan Era

  • @shawty51035 Bill Russel played with some great players of his era. Many of them hall of famers and named to the Nba greatest 50 of all time.

  • @Akademicdalabel nope. Good center, and player, but not the best.

  • @Akademicdalabel in my opinion, 2nd best.

first best...i think you know his name.

played for the bulls? won 6 titles? number 23?

  • @Akademicdalabel Jordan is the best.

  • @Akademicdalabel Sure, A 6.9 "center" who cannot dribble or shoot a ball. Do you see the stiffs he is playing against? If you said "in his time" I would completely agree. But to think he would be remotely as effective today is plain silly.

  • @Akademicdalabel How can you call someone the best player of all time who is only 6.9 who cannot shoot or dribble a basketball. The fact that basketball evolved to the point that 7ft player shoout the ball better than guards in those days does not count for anything? Yes, he was the greatest in his days but all time? That is preposterous.

  • @omnivorous65 How shallow. Basketball is not all about scoring or height. He is simultaneously one of the best rebounder and defender of all time. As well as an eleven ring holder. Doesn't that count for anything?

  • @wildreams Well, scoring and height are important aspect of basketball and being one of the tallest players in his days certainly worked in Russell's favour. No one doubts Russell's greatness and players can only shine in their era. My point is that basketball evolved considerably. Skills, size, defensive and offensive sophistication. If you time travel Russell into today's league he would be a marginal player. His height and bulk insufficient to dominate the center position and no offense.

  • He made those guys look like little kids. There may have been a lack of talent on the court, compared to today but even now, I could see him putting people in their place.

  • Look at the hustle plays he puts in, he is the best hustle player ever.

  • Greatest of all time is an understatment. Has any body looked at his statistics. He averages about 27 rebounds and 8 blocks per game. They didn't count blocks back then and I know that he averaged about eight. he had a great team built around him, and he has so many rings that he has to wear one around his toe!!!!!!!!

  • The greatest defensive player of all-time. I love the fact that he is acting as a pseudo-mentor to Kevin Garnett.

  • bill is the all time best defensive player and always will be and he can definately shoot too

  • a prime Shaq would give Russel nightmares, i mean Bill would wake up in the middle of the night crying if he had experienced NBA in the 90s...hes lucky he got to play with 6'6 white guys starting at Center.

  • WonderBread006- I guess you never heard of Wilt Chamberlain,Walt Bellamy, and Nate thurmond and other NBA players (white and black) playing center that were taller and outweighed Bill Russell you fucking idiot..There were less teams and as a result Russell banged heads with them over and over and managed to win 11 championship rings in 13 seasons 2 of which he was player coach..So stfu idiot.

  • WonderBread006-Willis Reed was another great player that Russell played against that was taller and outweighed Russell..

Russell has won more NBA championship rings than any center in the history of the NBA so screw you fucking moron. 6'6 white guys ROFLMAO

  • lmao...do you really think players of the 60s would match the players of today?..would a 6'5 Baylor average 19 rebounds a game today?...sure keep telling yourself that.

Bill Russel would not start for the Sacramento Kings...and that's no exaggeration.

  • WonderBread006-Hey moron what do you think a guy like Russell would be like if he had the training tools the players of today have?

  • hahaha if he had that he might be able to start for the Sacramento Kings...just might

  • WonderBread006-That's the best you can do for a reply?

  • is that the best you can do for a reply? lol...i wasn't being insulting, just honest...Billy wouldn't start for any team in the NBA.

  • @wonderbread_ Idiot,, Bill was great in that era, because they play ball in that era. If russell plays in the current era, he will adjust his game for today games. Idiot.

  • @WonderBread006 Dennis Rodman was 6'7", and he was a great rebounder. Elgin Baylor was a great rebounder as well. If Dennis Rodman at 6'7" playing power forward was a great rebounder why not Elgin Baylor at small forward? Rebounding isn't about height. It's about motivation to get the rebound. Barkley at 6'4" was a good rebounder as well. Baylor belongs to an elite in rebounding. Bob Pettitt, and Oscar Robertson.

  • @WonderBread006 Kevin Love is shorter than almost every opponent he faces.....yet he leads the league with 15 .....how is that possiblle????? it`s not allways about how tall you are

  • the 1960's is the best era of the NBA

  • most dominant defensive player ever.

  • the girl who stole the star.

  • whats the song?

  • juniorthug1 you fuckking idiot go back and look at some of the rosters in the 60's and the Lakers had more black players than the Celtics in some of those years. I could care less black or white. Let me know when the Lakers have 17 World Championship banners.

  • juniorthug1-I never got a reply . I guess you went and looked at the rosters back then and found out YOU WERE WRONG AND YOU'RE THE MORON!!!

  • Lakers will surpass Celts in Championships, just a matter of time...unless the world ends in 2012

  • The Los Angelos Lakers will not pass the Celtics in championships.

  • juniortug-I guess Wilt was a white man and the Celtics won a lot of titles when they only had 3 or 4 black players and other teams had more. You proved you're a fucking idiot with that comment..

  • juniorthug1-You're the NUMBER ONE MORON. You're as stupid as dj2joe who stated that Russell played against Chamberlain and KAREEM Russell retired after the 1969 season and NEVER PLAYED AGAINST KAREEM.

    juniorthug1+dj2joe=2 FUCKING IDIOTS.

  • ur a fucking asshole of course he played against wilt u dumb shit but u forgot wilt had alot of white men on the lakers side at that time while the cletics back then was black u moron so whos the dum bass now heh?

  • bill russell- BEAST

  • that play at 1:25...damn all those ppl must of been "what in the fuck was that?"

  • to yardleyhbk:

he also played against the guy on the NBA logo.

  • he played against nobody !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the League was not dominant at all BACK IN THE 1960'S OR 70'S, only bout 5 players was good back in the day other than that, he took over against a bunch of whites boy that dribble with 1 hand all , and making 2 underhand free throw , THINK ABOUT IT PEOPLE STOP JUMPING ON THE BANDWAGON AND THINK 4 YOUR FUCKING SELF , SO YOU TELLING ME THAT BILL RUSSELL WILL WELL AGAINST THIS ERA OF BASKETBALL ?? YEAH FUCKING RITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DONT MAKE ME LAUGH

  • this is absolute trash. of course we all know that the athletes in todays game stronger, quicker, faster, just better. but its the simple matter of the fact that bill russel was one of THOSE guys, on a level playing field for his era, and he won fucking 11 titles. you have to appreciate that, its a part of the nba legacy. learn to have some respect man, your really making yourself look like a fool.

  • He played against nobody? Don't be so fukin ignorant....

Wilt, Willis Reed, Kareem, Rick Barry, Elgin Baylor, John Havlieck, Jerry Lucas, Bob Pettit, Wes Unseld, Bob Cousy, Walt Frazier, Dave Cowens, Moses Malone, Robert Parish, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Lenny Wilkens, Bill Walton, Dr. J

Nate Archibald, George Gervin, Hal Greer

    Sam Jones, Earl Monroe.

To name a few of the players of the 60's and 70's (all in the top 50 list)

This era of basketball? No hand-checking and the 3 second rule?

  • @yardleyhbk Bill Russell(and many of the NBA players during his era)employed skills that are hardly seen in today's game, everyone wants to be a human highlight film nowadays....Sorry fundamentals compared to Russell's era....

  • dj2joe-How many championship rings does that guy on the N.B.A. logo have?

In case you don't know the answer it's 1 and he won that 1 ring when he was being coached by Boston Celtics great Bill Sharman....LMAO

  • Bill Russell !rock on! the Greatest champion.

  • Greatest NBA Player ever... Jordan and Oscar Robertson are a close second though...

  • 11 championship rings out of 13 seasons!!!!!!!!! SHIT!! Kobe has 4 out of 12 ....kobe sucks if you think about it but he is defenately the best nba player still playing still fighting a contest against Lebron

  • RIP RED AURBECH

  • he played against nobody that why he was so great , sorry people am the first motherfucka to break silence lol and fuck ya'll haters who bout to give me a thumbs down , sowooooooo

  • played against chamberlain and kareem.

  • @yardleyhbk You'll just be ignored because you really don't know what you're talking about....

  • the song is sad

  • don't forget that he won 11 rings in 13 years in a team and a city where he had to face racism against blacks when all others where white.

  • almost every black athlete faced the same things untill segregation laws finally happend. willie mays and hank aaron went thriugh horrible shit just like russell.

  • not 4, not 6... ELEVEN RINGS, gentlemen.

  • He was a great player.

  • He would school the centers today badly. It wasnt just his size but he knew how to play when to go up for a block and that sometimes you dont need to always try and up 50pts. Bynum, Yao, and Howard wouldnt stand much of a chance.

  • 12 or 13 Championships? My god... the greatest of all time.

  • 11 championships in the thirteen years he's played

  • King of Kings. MJ? KB? Magic? muahahahahaha

  • best center of all time

  • Wilt Chamberlain said that "Bill could have easily done what i have done. But he wouldn't do it because he knew that if he did, his team would not win."

  • russell is better than jordan i think

  • LOL K....

  • michael jordan is still the best ever russell is second to jordan...

  • i dont know, i mean bill russell won 11 championships during his 13 year career. you cant argue with success

  • @jeffpwnsgingernoobs Robert Horry got 7 titles so does that make him better than Jordan?

  • how can jordan be the best when russel's accomplishments are towering over jordan's???

  • overall jordan's accomplishments tower bill russell... you have to count the scoring tittles the finals mvp the defensive player of the years... and the way jordan dominated the league by himself for an entire decade.... russell had chamberlain to contend with...

  • dpoy awards came in 1983, all defensive teams weren't created until bill's last season & he made the 1st team. finals mvp awards were created in 1969.

  • on top of that, blocks was not even considered a stat yet at the time

  • magic had bird, wilt had russel, jordan dominated and he did it without a dominant big man, name me one dynasty that did that.

  • MJ had the best all round team in the era by far. The best shooters in the game, best rebounders, and in Scottie Pippen the most versatile player ever to play the game. That big man business just does't stand up.

  • it may not stand up to you, but u still fail to name any championship team/ dynasty that did not have a dominant offensive/ defensive big man. The numbers don't lie and the only team was MJ's bulls.

  • @tebebemakonnen. But, you have to look at who Jordan faced in the Finals. The talent at center in the 90's has been overrated. In every finals Jordan played, the Bulls NEVER went up against a dominant center (off and def). (The 90's were actually PF heavy instead).

The two teams the Bulls hardly won against were the Spurs and Rockets. it is because they possessed a dominant center. Jordan said himself that the team that gave him the most problems were the Rockets

  • @blackezi3 they played against ewing and shaq a lot of times in the playoffs

  • @EliaOrla They did, but Ewing was a jumpshooter and never really had any advanced post moves. When he played againt Olajuwon in the finals, almost 75% of his shots were jumpshots and he shot about 30% in that series. Also, he continued to do that throughout his whole playoff career. Thats why it was easier for the bulls to beat the knicks, cause the center wasnt dominant in the post offensively. And Shaq even though he was good, was before his prime. But the Magic still beat the Bulls in '95

  • @tebebemakonnen 89 90 Pistons didnt have a dominant big man

  • Bill Russell is the Best!

  • really nice but now the game is too different

  • Greatest CENTERS ever .... 1.) Bill Russell 2.) Wilt Chamberlain 3.) a healthy Bill Walton 4.) Kareem Abdul Jabbar 5.) Wes Unseld 6.) Moses Malone 7.) Hakeem Olajuwon 8.) Robert Parrish 9.) Willis Reed 10.)Nate Thurmond Russell was the BEST!!!
  • u must be high, what about dwight and shaq?

  • look man top 5 no order:

    1)Bill Russell

    2)Hakeem Olajuwon

    3)Kareem Abdul Jabbar

    4)Shaq O' Neal

    5)Wilt Chamberlain

    ...6)Kwame...lmao..nah just messin...:P

  • i would say wilt 4 oneal 5

  • Comment removed

  • @LordofDublin4 What about a healthy Shaq?

  • There will never be a champion like Russell.

  • excellent song choice

  • What is the name of this song?

  • look @t discription...
