  • I got an Irish whistle the other day just for the soul purpose of playing Irish music. This video will help me out greatly. thanks so much!

  • THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST INSTRUCTION VIDEO, IN MY OPINION,

ABOUT THE PENNY-WHISTLE (or flute). FOR LACK OF A BETTER

WORD I WOULD SAY THAT THIS VIDEO HAS GOT A "SOUL".

    Those 9 dislikes must be SOUL-LESS & TONE-DEAF people.

    THANKS POPS !

  • Do you make and sell penny whistles then? What's the website to your shop? Thanks for those tips, you have unlocked a few mysteries for me!

  • @jel2003 Youtube won't let me post a link, so just type eriktheflutemaker with a dot, and then a word that's the first three letters of computer. =)

  • wonderful player

    thanks a lot

  • Your A whistle sounds very Japanese, I'm thinking because of the bamboo, it sounds beautiful.

  • Whats the song at the beginning?

  • I wish I had more people like this man in my life.

  • sir, could I find your shop? do you sell your products online?

  • @Inheritencefan1134 I mean where could I find your shop?

  • thank you for making this video and sharing your knowledge. it was thoroughly enjoyable to watch

  • Just bought a pennywhistle, can't wait to get it

  • does anybody know what key that whistle is in? i may have missed it or something.

  • @Aj935 Hello, here are the Penny Whistles used in the you tube clip , the first one you hear but do not see is the "D" whistle, the next whistle you see is the Bamboo "A" dark & carved, and the next one you see is a "C" bamboo one, but we dont sell that one anymore, we only sell "C" Wood Whisltes. Hope that helps! Erik

  • what's the song at 5:25???

  • @melzio69 Greensleeves unless I am mistaken.

  • your jazz whistle playing is super innovative

  • I really liked this. GREAT JOB! Very straightforward yet entertaining. I will very much like to see more of your videos when I can squeeze the time. You sir have a veritable philosopher's gift of teaching. Amazing! First time seeing this video, and I do enjoy the tin whistle / irish whistle / penny whistle. (listening to, have not purchased one 'yet') I find this video instruction very enjoyable.

  • that's an amazing flute, and your playing is phenomenal. what kind is it?

  • I love it! I just bought a penny whistle today but I love this movie.

But I don't understand Englisch very well, so I hope I got his tips right ;-)

  • @loui0008 He makes them for sale! Check out his website. I just bought a bamboo flute, can't wait to get it!

  • what flute are you playing? Great video - thank you!

  • mmmmmm....that was good music :D

  • so do you need to really focus when you play a penny whistle?

  • thiswhole 5 thing is because on a penny whistle the fifth hole is the root of the minor scale which has the same notes as the major scale, the root of which is the sixth hole. duh.

  • A pentatonic recorder is also terrific fun and a little easier to play if you're really musically "challenged".

  • I love tin Whistle...!

  • BOSS pedals... thats the way to go man :)

  • is that Pennywhistle in D?

  • Amazing!

  • wow this guy is good

  • @ultrapluppen

he sells all these flutes on his website

  • Anyone have one of these? I'd love to see a comparison to other whistles

  • Hey I have some questions about pennywhistles ^^

How much should I spend for a whistle and can you recommend a special one.....I think about of buying a flute in D and one in C :D pls answer =)

  • Hi, i have some questions:

1)Is it easy to play the pennywhistle if you can play well the recorder?

2)How much can a pennywhistle like that cost?

  • I first came to know this instrument through Avantasia's Farewell, and just fell in love with it. and this wise determined me to buy one. just ordered from amazon :3

  • Hi i would like all the tipes of irish flutes?

  • Very cool. I'm going to order one of your whistles soon. Could you please tell me what the first song is in this video? Can I download it somewhere? I love that kind of atmospheric Celtic music.

  • @Photo314159 Nevermind I found it on itunes! Cool song.

  • I'm always thinking that I want to learn to play the penny whistle. You made it seem all so easy that I now know that I really want to learn to play, Now it's figuring out which one to buy for the beginner.

  • ‹(•¿•)› º°`°º¤AWESOME Thank You°`°º¤‹(•¿•)› º°`°

With you I discovered a true poet in addition to music.

    What quality music! Extraordinary.

  • That thing sounds like like it is opening a rift into another wolrd when you play it... it echoes beautifully!! I love it.

  • @MayorSmellington it's in key of A

  • @Darblicus it's in A

  • What's the name of that instructional paper :)? and where could i get one for myself?

    - That was some mighty fine playing sir :')

  • @CNLFrEaK lovely sound luv the whistle

  • @CNLFrEaK lovely sound luv the whistle is it in c

  • @CNLFrEaK Ey chap, did you ever receive an answer regarding that instructional paper? I can see the uploader replied, but it doesn't say anything in his comment.

I play the guitar, and i just bought one of these whistles. The tabs on the instructional paper work basically the same way as tabs for guitar, so I reckon it'd give me a good start getting one of those papers.

Either way, I'd like to know what you learned :)

    Cheers

  • @CNLFrEaK He made the flute he was playing. He also sells them so if you buy one you will get the paper.

  • How does the Irish penny whistle differ from the English penny whistle? i know the English tin whistle became very popular in Ireland.

  • When i hear this i see Hobbits... :D

LORD OF DA RINGS HOBBIT STYLE FTW!

    ~Trey->

  • Epic video. I've always love the sound of these whistles. Thanks for the information. However, I wish you would have kept the irish accent, LOL.

  • what key was the first penny whistle he played in?

  • Это просто великолепно!

    Thats wonderfull!

I want that video in russian sub so much. My english bad...

  • Please record some tutorial videos for the penny whistle (consider us C players!)

  • What tonality is the first penny whistle?

  • hello want to buy one of his pennywhistle, I'm from Argentina, can you

    send them to me?

  • Just a quick question, though, are you able to play an entire D chromatic scale on a pennywhistle tuned in D, or just specific notes in say the d major scale or whichever?

  • @killamonkey yes you are, in two seperate octaves.

  • Humming into wind instruments always produces awesome sounds.

  • Hi, I'm from Argentina

I have 17 years of age and would like to make those m whistles,

how could I do to contact you please

    god bless

  • hello, I loved your videos.

where the first note is tuned whistle?

  • I also got a pennywhistle, how come I cant make it sound as beautiful as you do...

    Great video, great work!

  • Interesting explanation. When you are explaining about irish and jazz tunes (starting on the 5, in what key are you playing related to the key of the whiste?

  • prodigious!

  • This. Video. Blows. My. Mind.

  • I love Erik's flutes! Not to mention his sense of humor. He's not a bad teacher either.

  • The feeling I get when listening to the penny whistle and the egyptian flute... its an undescribable feeling of legendary epicness. Thanks for sharing a little glimpse of your life experiences. Much respect out of Canada, Ontario.

    Shane L

  • This video is fantastic.

I can relate to him as a musician because I've been playing the piano for 12 years, sound better than any music teacher I've ever encountered, and am self taught.

I admire that he teaches through soul, rather than strict mechanics.

This guy just made me order a penny whistle off amazon.

What an amazingly down to earth human being.

Keep creating music and videos; I'll be watching!

  • @JoshuaLandonTM exactly ther same here, just bought a FEADOG penny whistle, really beautiful instrument

  • @JoshuaLandonTM You're appearing to claim music is something greater than what it actually is. Break it down and you have a few idiots standing around organising some sound into what we call a song. How that is done is not relevant to the overall experience.

  • @JoshuaLandonTM People have forgotten no matter how technical a song, music is the connection of tone, feeling, emotion, sincerity and communication with everything that's out there and inside. I could hear music when I was really little in the way "random noise" resonated, wind, light, the feeling of people coming alive when they laughed or smiled - it went away when I learned how to play, and I'm 27 now and just coming back with it

  • Begorra! that is a very clear demonstration of how to play the instrument. Great job!

  • like! greetings from serbia

  • This guys is a saint mister can you please answer some questions for me what key is that tin whistle in the one you played at 00:44 if you could answer that id be most pleased and are your tin histles for sale i would love to buy the the kind your playing at 00:44

  • Gosh.... This bloke has taught me more in this video than all the books that i have put together, just brilliant , thanks

  • What's the tune at the beginning?

  • That was Brilliant!!!

  • wow, thank you so much :D i never knew how to play irish pennywhistle but after your lesson everything got tottaly clear to me :D kinda simular to clarinet when it comes to do re mi fa... now i tottaly need to buy one . I only played regular flute when i was around 7but i didnt rly fealt it so i switched to piano and some other instruments .but this pennywhistle is a must try :D thank you ^^

  • this is pure magic..wow

  • great vidio, you have showed me some great tips on the half note, one more faver could you send me the notes for the titanic. thanks

  • @nixon092010 Go check out the notes on his website...

  • Erik. Thanks for the excellent Irish Whistle as demonstrated in the first tune. The quality has to be seen to be believed. You want this type of sound, check out Erik the Flutemaker and his great website. A hoot to do business with. BTW the name of the opening tune is Forest of Dreams, which is available on the site.

    Eddie

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • The sound is soooooo sad Erik but beautiful.. I love to hear/watch you play.. just sets me at peace.

  • whats the name of the song right at the begining of the the video?

  • is ur penny whistle in the key of D??

  • thanks for this, you have a beautiful way of explaining things and now I have to get one!! just got a bodhran and there are lovely tutorials for those as well on Youtube, what a great thing this is!!! all the best to you...from the Miramichi

  • Thanks Erik! That was fun.

  • that is all so beautiful!

I love everything you played, however i think the Irish music just sounds so grand on it.

I love this and the pan pipes!

  • 5:25 - is there balalayka on the wall? :D

  • wait, they got bamboo in ireland?

  • that concept of ending of ending on 5(ii) is called the dorian mode. most celtic music is in the dorian or mixolydian mode wich starts on the 2 (V)

  • What is the tune at the end? I wanna learn it :)

  • @patman1485 he's using reverb btw if u didn't already notice (but u probably already did).

  • Five. A genius in it's simplicity. I am also a self taught whistler but could not get that "Irish" sound. Thank you so much!

  • @ppl00125 it's in A but most irish songs are in D

  • The first one is an A pennywhistle (i would know i have perfect relative pitch, plus i double checked by hit the keys on my piano). Technically, the original version of the titanic song was played with a B flat pennywhistle, so if u wanna play the REAL TO TRUTH version get a B flat penny whistle or play it in B flat on any other penny whistle. But the reason the tune sounds ok but not 100% correct on the others is cuz when u use a differnt whistle, all you've really done is transposed the song.

  • could someone PLEASE PLEASE tell me what key this pennywhistle is in??? i would appreciate it so much. Thanks y'all. Please only answer if you know. Also, what's the most common key for irish tunes to be played on the pennywhistle???

  • Its a flute sound here and as penny whistle sounding as a trumpet!

  • BTW. can anyone tell me what the tune at 5.25 is ?

  • @Thnielsen85 The tune is GREENSLEEVES

  • a wise old man once told me that the key to playing great music is to let it come from the heart, and i belive you found the key :) its fantastic to watch you play. you look so relaxed and joyfull, and the music is amazing.

  • Wow!!!!! That sounds so absolutely wonderful:)))))) Music from the heart:))

  • @Dancegirl144

I think the same, when I hear it, I see a green mountain, wit little houses, looks like The Shire, You know?

It's so wonderful the music from this Whistle, I want to buy one... Maybe for Christmas... :D

  • in the beginning is he playing a C or D whistle?

  • Its an A whistle.

  • @leonscottkennedyre4 As far as I know it's in the key of A. It's an Alto whistle.

  • @SPOOK0991 What whistle is it exactly? And is it alright if I get a whistle in the key of A or do you recommend getting it in the key of D?

  • @Plasma250 The whistle is his own. Erik is an amazing musician as well as a builder. And I recommend going with your Gut. Most Irish whistle tunes will be in the key of D. But the key of A is an amazing key for writing your own tunes. But since you are a beginner I personally would recommend a D. Because you can learn some of the classic Irish tunes and kind of pave the way for your own tune in the future. Remember, The style you start with now will always shine through your own tunes. Mind that

  • @Plasma250 And I recommend brands such as Clarke, Susato, Tony Dixon, and Feadog. But stay away from anything by Generation.

I personally recommend a Clarke Original D whistle for your first. It was my first and I am still happy with it today. The whistle shop . com is pretty much the best place to get one. They have the lowest prices.

  • @SPOOK0991 Thank you so much for your input! I've been looking at a Tony Dixon High D (Brass) for a while now...but I don't necessarily like how high the notes are. Can you recommend a whistle in the key of A? (Provide the link if you can please).

  • @Plasma250 A Susato Kildare M-Series is the cheapest "A" whistle I was able to find for you. And that is going to be around $64.00. That quote is from *Whistle And Drum . com* Just search "Susato Kildare M-series" at the website and it will come up. Now, if $64.00 bucks is a bit expensive I recommend getting a Susato Kildare S-Series in the key of Bb. Bb is one half step higher than A. So there is not a big difference in volume. And you can get one of those for about $38.00 bucks. Same website.

  • @Plasma250 And also, I hate to even mention this. But if you want something that is just downright cheep. Get a Generation Flageolet for about $9.00 bucks from the same website. They are at least okay instruments. But I suggest sticking with the Susato's if your not worried about the price.

  • @SPOOK0991 Thank you so much for all your help! I haven't made up my mind, but I'm definitely getting a Susato.

  • @Plasma250 Great choice! They sound very nice!

  • I'd just like to say that having Irish and Scottish roots I have always been exposed to the sounds of this instrument, but have NEVER been able to put into words why i love the sound so much.

thefultemaker has put into words every essence of the sound that comes out of this whistle, and I kinda teared up a little hearing it described to me. Thank you, it was enlightening!

  • i have spanish english and irish roots

  • mangham o mongain in gaelic it means the sons of the hairy

  • @h0lystrike

i feel the exact same way haha, i have majority of Scottish roots.....but this sound is really relaxing and chill, im thinking about picking it up.

  • hey, is there some solid musician out there who could write out the notes to the intro? for some reason i can't sound it out

all i've got is 5 4 3 to start it off

thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

  • 5434565 and thats ill i got so far lol

  • nice play! but, what's te key of this irish flute?

and is it a clarke one?

  • very nice video i have irish ancestors from northern ireland county armagh

  • wow!

  • I have to get one of these :)

Can someone please tell me the first flute he is playing? It sounds much lower than a D.

  • Comment removed

  • aghh my guess is its A? I have no idea, but I love the sound of that flute.

  • Comment removed

  • "....a half note....and that doesn't make me half the man.." haha love it

you just earned yourself a new subscriber!

  • they call that an irish flute or tin flute or irish tin flute here (canada). i got one for like 5$ at a toy store once though, and it sounds like 100 times better than the "recorder" does (that dumb white plastic thing that they used to make me play in grade school).

  • "they call that an irish flute or tin flute or irish tin flute"

You must hang out with the wrong people in Canada, because all the ones I've run into have known the difference.

These are all pennywhistles, also called a Tinwhistles.

Sometimes "Irish" is wrongly added; it's an English instrument, tho used widely in Irish music.

An Irish Flute is held parallel to your chest, and blown through a hole in the top of it, just like a regular valved flute, only without the valves.

  • tin whistles are english robert clarke made them

  • How much do pennywhistles of the quality of the ones in the video cost? Where can I get one?

  • I just bought mine on amazon.

  • Greensleeves is the tune Mr Whippy plays here in NZ, I don't know about other places though

  • Epic intro

  • The song he plays from 5:23 to 5:35 is "Greensleeves" or "What Child is This?" a 16th century English melody you hear a lot around Christmas.

  • hey im a penny whistle player but i was wondering if anybody had tips on how to get the second octave other then blowing harder when i try that it doesnt carry the scale it sounds very sharp its a feadog so i was just wondering

  • Whats the name of the song he plays at 5:23-5:35

I think it was a them song for a tv serie ?

  • That's very interesting, I didn't know the Irish tradition relied so heavily on the dorian mode
