It's definitely more Chopinesque, as opposed to Gilels' somewhat Beethovenian reading. Yet some of Gilels' unorthodox choices provide unrepeatable insight into this music, esp in the 3rd movement, wherein he sets up a conspicuous contrast between "a Chopin nocturne" and "a Beethoven adagio", thus drawing into foreground the stylistic heterogeneity of Chopin's music, its too often obliterated aspect
Thanks very much for this! I had never heard Zak play before, a wonderful treat. A Melodiya recording of Rachmaninoff's 4th concerto with Nikolai Petrov was released domestically on Angel back in the 1970s. It remains one of the most exciting performances of Op. 40 ever. I was lucky to hear Petrov live in Pasadena (!) ca. 1987 - 1991, playing Prokofiev 7th Sonata. Spectacular.
Nikolai petrov I heard playing mendelssohn scottish fantasie on Classical Archives. It is outstanding but there are no posts here so unfortunate his tone is sublime. sorry to deviate but I saw he was a pupil.
Great pianist and teacher. It's a pity he died after a brutal police...

Man, this really is superb! (and I don't garnish praise with ease)

Incredible. So modern. In my opinion better than Gilels' Version.

Such a delicious tone. Is it just cooincidence that the Ukraine comes up with many of the greatest tonemakers? Or is it just my ears?
