Holy crap, Eddie Barbanell is hilarious and an awesome guy. That said, this is all just semantics. It's also human nature. "Retarded" (which, unlike many "slurs", actually makes sense semantically, to retard is to delay or impede, such as impeded mental development) becomes a slur, so we use "disabled" instead. Then THAT become the slur eventually. So we begin using "challenged"...guess what happens next? That's right! It's not because of the word itself, it's because people are ignorant.

The way i see it, using the r word to refer to anything that is stupid is offensive and irresponsible. But at the same time, completely ridding society from the use of the r word only makes it more powerful. Take the n word, everybody pretty much decided to stop using it, but now it is to the point that when anyone says it, they are ostracized for it. If we get rid of the r word, we might just make it more powerful, and more offensive. Think about it, do you really want another n word?

Eddie had me tearing up.. :) My brother was diagnosed with Autisim. I am truly inspiried by what Johnny & Eddie had to say, and The Ringer is my favorite movie because it's inspiring in so many ways and truly brings out who people with mental disabilites truly are, and that they are just like normal people. They were given gifts and made that way for a reason. I have 1 friend with down syndrome and 1 with autisim. They bring happiness into my life, and they proves that angels really do exist :)

A lot of people did, and still do, live their whole lives in an instituion.
