Hmm some people are retarded, some people behave retarded but You cant blame them for it (wel most of them), You can call it mentaly challenged, yeah right ity still means the same, what do you call your fridge, a closet that keeps my things cool in it, come on.
It's a whole other thing in using the retarded word to hurt people.
just because someone has down syndrom does not mean he is retarded or it's ok to call him that to hurt him.
Holy crap, Eddie Barbanell is hilarious and an awesome guy. That said, this is all just semantics. It's also human nature. "Retarded" (which, unlike many "slurs", actually makes sense semantically, to retard is to delay or impede, such as impeded mental development) becomes a slur, so we use "disabled" instead. Then THAT become the slur eventually. So we begin using "challenged"...guess what happens next? That's right! It's not because of the word itself, it's because people are ignorant.
@digthatfunk i think you're stretching a little bit. "nigger" is clearly stigmatized but saying someone is "black" isn't. while the media might lead you to feel differently(only "african-american" is acceptable)being friends with many people that are black people has shown me that its debatable if any "african-american" finds the qualitative "black" offensive. retarded is offensive. disabled is still offensive because of what the word itself implies. there is nicer language, why not use it?
@putzfrau89 Why does it have to be "African-American" and not just "American"? Does it really matter all that much unless you're being descriptive? And if you are being descriptive, shouldn't it be alright to just say they're brown because you're not meaning offense in anyway whatsoever? Just like the R word, if you're being descriptive with no harm intended, like in music or a doctor, it's perfectly acceptable in my opinion.
Damn... after watching this video... I want to somehowe help anybody... I HAVE EVERYTHING IN LIVE!!!! Im soooo happy!!!!! People, sometimes WE NEED TO THINK, how other people are living.... God bless everyone!!! Stay safe and happy, everything will be alright! ;)
The way i see it, using the r word to refer to anything that is stupid is offensive and irresponsible. But at the same time, completely ridding society from the use of the r word only makes it more powerful. Take the n word, everybody pretty much decided to stop using it, but now it is to the point that when anyone says it, they are ostracized for it. If we get rid of the r word, we might just make it more powerful, and more offensive. Think about it, do you really want another n word?
naaaaw, these are amazing videos they bring me tears or joy, seeing people with disabilities acting and being so cute(: i love down syndromes theyre gorgoues (:
I absolutly love the R-word foundation!!!!!!! it's amazing wat they do and how its impacted my school and my self. and Eddie Barbanell is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
how can someone dislike this video? i mean seriously.... eddie is my hero :). I would do anything. and i mean anything to meet him. he is a huge inspiration and such a wonderful actor. he is so confident in himself :) i'm so proud of him.
Eddie had me tearing up.. :) My brother was diagnosed with Autisim. I am truly inspiried by what Johnny & Eddie had to say, and The Ringer is my favorite movie because it's inspiring in so many ways and truly brings out who people with mental disabilites truly are, and that they are just like normal people. They were given gifts and made that way for a reason. I have 1 friend with down syndrome and 1 with autisim. They bring happiness into my life, and they proves that angels really do exist :)
you guys should see the lost clips of jackass the clip eddie and me when johny and eddy prank tremaine its sooo awsome.theyr both great . eddi should join jackass
"It's like God taking something away from them in one area and making them extraordinary in other areas."
Perfectly put, indeed, Eddie.
I have been visually impaired since birth and that's the attitude I have always been taught to view myself as and my friends who have various disabilities. We all have a little wisdom and spirit of compassion to share with the world that we might not have been blessed with had we been born with all our senses. Bravo, Eddie. :)
man i feel really guilty. i don't insult those kind of ppl but i do use that word (R-word) to my friends just for play. and now that've watched this vid, i won't anymore. i understand now. IT HURTS
Hmm. Having to censor myself seems like pitying them. They can'y handle being called a retard? My friends don't mind it. I don't. Seems like showing special treatment to me. I think he just said that's what they don't want. Or do we want to make ourselves feel better by making mentally ill think they don't want special treatment but give it to them anyway? Is it because we're not? So now we should stop saying things as they are? This whole campaign is filled with hypocrisy. Good P.R. though.
@amountstax4 is not calling a black person nigger pittying them ? no it is respectfull not calling someone a retard does not mean you are pittying anyone it means you are respecting their feelings and respecting their rights as a human being just because someone has a disabiltiy be it physical or mental does not make them a retard it is simply a way of life,
@amountstax4 You and your friends aren't hurt by that word, because it's not actually a description of you, and you're fortunate enough to be able build an intellectual barrier between your self-identity and others' words. Not everyone can. This campaign is about treating human beings like human beings - delete the r word from your vocabulary, and you'll find it easier to do so.
This is so cute <3 I new that Johnny Knoxville have REALY BIG hearth. Even i haven't seen him for real I saw it from his beautiful cute eyes ;) He can't be diferent (Not the way like Bam. I think he's feeling like a HUGE star (sorry Bam fans it's just my opinion) And if anyone agree with me then Thumbs Up!
I love the people like all of u cause you are the only ones who dont say it and think its funny. i would get into so many fights at school to stand up for my brother who has down syndrome who gets made fun off. that word has to end. spread the word to end the word.
How did I just find out about this? The use of this word has been really bothering me though. Many of my relatives use it to insult others or actions, and it just makes me boil up.
I'm a bit of an asshole but I redeem myself by sticking up for my friend with down syndrome :) he's a great guy and more fun than most of the people I know
i thought less of johnny knoxville when i seen his face of the cover of ringer thought he was more of a good dude but still at least hes cool spreding a gd word
While I do agree with all of this and like some other ppl i find this to be the same as pushing to end the n-word Im a wheelchair user and you dont see me running to actors or famous ppl or what have you to end the word of cripple... Again while a worthy cause in concept in reality it is a waste of time and dollars... Look at the n-word which to this very minute is some where being used to talk ill of a black person Just my OPINION take it as you that nothing more nothing less
@justinxaz what do you mean what has he come to? He's not a different person he just doesn't use the r-word... What's wrong with him trying to keep from hurting his friend?
People who think human beings will suddenly stop using inherent, survival mechanics (like subjugating others) if they make enough videos on youtube moaning about it = heh.
If you make enough youtube videos, people will suddenly stop creating insulting words and subjugating each other with them. Since humans beings aren't inherently selfish and oppressive, we should see the complete extinction of anger, selfishness, envy, and pride over night.
Oh wait I just realized humans will always subjugate one another because it's an inherent survival mechanic. Without it, none of us would be alive today to cry about things on youtube. Hmmm.
A lot of people think "retard" is just a word meaning slow. Well, the n-word was just a word too and by definition is originally a descendant of the Latin adjective niger, meaning the color "black." HOWEVER, it is NOW used as a hateful word against a race. The word "retard" is used against a group of people in a hateful way as well. Both are derogatory against things that people are born with and cannot help. They should BOTH be treated with contempt for the people that they hurt.
@delaina910 If you're trying to compare the word nigger to the word retard, you need to grow up. We didn't keep retards in chains and force them to be slaves, you fucking racist.
@obongo99 Babies with disabilities were left to die in some cultures and until fairly recently babies and young children with disabilities were almost always put in institutions when they were born. A lot of people did, and still do, live their whole lives in an instituion. It's obviously completely different from slavery but it always annoys me when someone tries to compare disabled vs. black or disabled vs. gay because the person invariably has no idea what disabled people experience.
The word retard isnt offensive because its something that someoen is.
its offensive because we treat them retarded, the definition of the word is to slow down or hinder, and this isnt caused by any mental difficiency, its caused by people treating the mentally handicapped different.
its not about being slowed down, its about others slowing you down.
If that makes any sense, dont say to a person taht they are retarded, because retard is an action taken by someone else.
what the hell are you talking about Ralokone? The word is extremely offensive to people with special needs, their family, and even their friends. When people say "retard" they aren't saying "to slow down or to hinder." For example, someone in my class said "the weather is retarded" the other day because it would rain, then stop, then rain, then sun...couldn't have sounded more ignorant, yet it still irks me to hear it despite the ridiculous context.
Great message, amazing video. Proud of these two!
