  • O'Toole's voice was dubbed by Simon Gilbert, but it takes nothing away from his great acting. One of my favorites.

  • Oh I know it's all emboldening and such like, but it still doesn't fail to bring a tear to the eye!

  • I don't know this musical, but this sing is so sad :((

  • @harrycastle1 It's meant to be the exact opposite of sad!

  • Notice the zero eye blinking, the focussed eyes and body.

This adds to the intensity of deliverance and message.

Brought into today's performance, simply direct the eyes to the camera,

and be real, natural but just as intense and urgent in the intent.

    Awesome.

    ~ s.

  • lawful good

  • Every time I view this I begin to get teary eyed. Its The way he convinced them to dream, and Sancho and Dulcinea stayed beside him at the end. Scary how in the inquisition Cervantes also made the people dream. Its good theater. A great tale and an even better song. =D

  • Seems perfectly sane to me.

  • Keep fighting.

  • 1 person lost the ability to dream within the past three months.

  • Why were Cervantes and Sancho summoned before the Holy Office of the Inquisition? Were they executed?

  • It is a story about a dreamer, an idealist, whom in a theater production can be so pure and idealistic. Some whom knew me three years ago, may think this described me as I was once very idealistic, probably a bit naive, but it is my history, not my present self. Sincerely, Jason Lowen

  • wonderful!! They don!t act like this any more!!

  • is this the same guy who played "captain cat" in "Under Milkwood"????

  • @georgieonmymind IT IS :)) Peter O'toole

  • Incredible. This is the only version that actually sent shivers down my spine. He didn't even make grand hand gestures. Just the subtly and fantastic orchestra absolutely blows me away.

  • Please HELP! My Aunt just died and this was her all time fav! She named her dog Sancho, her cat Dulcinea, loved Impossible Dream, her home was all decorated as Don Quixote - plaque "La Casa de Hombre de LaMancha".

Anyways I am writing a bio/obit...Please explain what this meant "Soft and fair, my friends; in last year's nests there are no birds this year."

PLEASE REPLY ASAP - I NEED IT BY THIS FRIDAY!

  • @Rnjax1 A little late, but perhaps for next year's memorial? It means that we have the tendency to draw on past experiences to prepare us for the future, but we must realize that this method is fallible. Just because there were birds in the nests last year doesn't mean there are now. Hence, it is more powerful to dream of future possibilities, and prepare for what we would love to happen. Just as fallible, but the only real tragedy is if the opportunity comes your way, and you cannot accept it.

  • "Death has absolutely nothing illogical, illogical would be to live a life without goals."

  • Wow, so powerful! It is unfortunate that most of the Lemmings prefer T&A, explosions, car chases and 4-letter-word dialogue.

  • Today, people like to watch movies full of explosions, bullets and blood.

Where are these kind of movies, real movies...

And what is wrong with you people, why you can't be like the Noble Sir Knight Don Quixote? It's because it's not cool?

The world needs more people like us, people who try to reach the unreachable star...

Don Quixote is my hero, my example to follow in life C:

Glory to you my lord, you are immortal!

  • The mission of each true knight

    Is Duty, nay, Privilege.

i'am i Don Quixote, The Lord of La Mancha

A Destiny calls and we go

and the wild winds of fortune will carry us onward

    whither so ever they blow

    whither so ever they blow

    onward to Glory we go

  • The Broadway original Quixote Richard Kiley became my hero when I was a very young man after listening to the released recording of "La Mancha". I would listen to it for hours on end. When this film came out I was in my early '20's and it fell completely flat to me because I expected the robust dramatic wide sound of Kiley and totally forgot about this version. But now almost 40 years later and having had serious vocal training, I really like this version too. Thanks for posting it.

  • sounds very english

  • i love this song =D

  • Esta cancion es profundisimo. =)

    Me encanta.

  • Sou brasileira. Mabe you don't you underten me. Sorry. Assisto este filme desde os 14 anos . Today i have 54.naw in espanhol. I love this film. Alguem se propõe a corrigir e tornar isto legível.? Nobady irá entender esta loucura. Caso aconteça. Entre em contato com bethnaves@ig.com.br

  • A remarkable and memorable representation of the most immortal work of the "Manco de Lepanto", Miguel de Cervantes.

  • did you know one lyric of this song is based off of dante's inferno "to march into hell for a heavenly cause"

  • always follow your dream to the end

  • Wow, Sophia Loren is HOT

  • Sophia (Wisdom): "The quest... You must remember!"

  • no hand gestures :(

  • we use this song as an example in music theory, and i absolutely love it!

  • The ending gets me every time. . . I always cry as they sing him his song. You know he's going to die. But his "Impossible Dream" was remembered. :' )

  • crap, thats make me wanna play skyrim

  • @acquakes Go for it! My son asked for it for Christmas. :)

  • how could someone not like this ......are there people out there with no heart at all

  • So beautiful, and such a wonderful film! Thanks for sharing.

  • A clinician came into Chamber Choir the other day and sang this song, he was amazing!!

  • PS--I SAW THE BROADWAY VERSION WITH RICHARD KILEY AT THE AMAZING FOX THEATRE....

  • I SAW THIS IN THE FOX THEATRE IN THE MID-LATE SIXTIES AS A CHILD..IT LEFT A LIFE LONG IMPRESSION ON ME...MY FAVORITE ALL TIME SONG/CHARACTER AND BOOK BY CERVANTES--TRULY OTHERWORLDLY BEAUTIFUL--IF ONLY EVERYONE COULD LIVE JUST A LITTLE BIT LIKE DON QUIXOTE FOR JUST A SINGLE MOMENT.....

  • I always liked the way his beard grew darker as his energy returned.

  • i watched the film when i was young it was the first time i cried & at a film

  • tears in muh eyes

  • @colonnadeproductions Type properly you wanker.

  • this movie was such a flop when it came out, this song was a diamond in the rough

  • Inspiration for "Last Three Years" feature film. Where do we exist in our heads? Check out DNA Makes NO Mistakes if you're looking for an impossible goal. dnanomistakes tot com

  • dont get it where are they taking him at the end

  • “Dream the impossible dream, Fight the unbeatable foe, Strive with your last once of courage To reach the unreachable star.”

  • I have searched for lyrics for this song. In all of the versions I have watched, while trying to find "these" lyrics. This is the absolutely best version of this song. Peter O'Toole was not a singer, but he was an actor, and he put an actor's feeling into the song.

  • It's not actually Peter O'Toole singing, it's dubbed.

  • @frankmuddler You are right. I just looked it up on Wikipedia. I believe the name I saw and already may have forgotten, was "Simon Gilbert" singing.

  • @richardmumolo But Peter O'Toole did not do the singing, Richard Kiley is better than O'Toole or Placido Domingo. If this is to be revived we need another Kiley.

  • @richardmumolo ..i love this version...but for some reason like the lacido domingos better

  • This gets me sad, but I realize "Man of La Mancha" stood for something more than money, he died poor, but rather be happy and have money as no one desires to be poor. Sam sung.

  • WHen I die ...I want to die like Don Quixote

  • @ChelseaGrin358 Be like him while you live.

  • Well put together from the movie! Thank You! For posting!

  • Don Quixote's death always leaves me in tears. :(

  • lol thumbs up if your listening to this because of Herman Cain XD

  • Currently running sound and lights (yeah, at the same time), for a production of this musical and this has got to be my favorite song in the show. Though a lot of it's likable.

  • Herman Cain!

  • My all time favorite song.

  • lol

  • i hate this vid

  • Excellent - I can't stop crying - what is this world? I prefer my cat!

  • Elvis' version tops the list I think. He sings it with full passion.

  • Sometimes, madness is better than sanity. The unique thinking that brought us technology and advances civilizations could have, in the past, been called madness. If normal thinking stems progress and creativity, then I embrace the chaos of creativity and madness. This I truly believe.

  • ONE can hear the TRUTH of SOUL a million times over the passages of time & still FEEL the tears of HEART centre ...

  • type in "The Harrison House Trailer" on youtube.

it truly is dreaming the impossible dream, and it's awesome...

a 600 dollar budget film, that is set to rock this world

  • 32 people can't dream

  • @lalaboingmash Yes, it seems to be 'impossible' for them. Too bad.

  • @fergusof hahahaha keep dreaming everyone!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember watching the movie as a young boy, and it is one of the best movies I have ever seen.

  • just listen to Georg Ots singing this ...

  • He looks a bit like a thunderbird in this video

  • You can't not be moved by this, no matter how aloof you want to appear to the world.

  • @BeauDaltonJordan I love this musical and this song. I saw this musical on Broadway starring Brian Stokes Mitchell, who was very good and I've listened repeatedly to the earlier version on cd starring the magnificent Richard Kiley. Kiley's rendention of "IMPOSSIBLE DREAM" bring tears to a person's eyes. That why I can't stand the movie version. I love Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren, but neither one of them could sing--and this is a singer's musical. My God,they couldn't hired Richard Kiley.

  • This was from Man of La Mancha!? O_O

  • Best ending ever...

  • @Piggle36 He died the way most men only dream of.

    Happy

  • love this song <3 these types of songs really gives people hope and courage, when they are much needed-way better than modern music. makes me wish the world would be a better place :D

  • When one is young…..life seems like a long long road ahead…but when one ages and is seeing the path nearing its end….this masterful work played by Peter O'toole is so very encouraging! I feel like I can still right the unrightable wrong!! thank you for posting it…..

  • When I saw this in '67, I cried. Not out of the glory of the impossible dream, but out of the thought that I didn't have the courage or the integrity to follow that dream. "To love pure and chaste from afar" was so far out of my league that I saw myself as hopeless.

In recent years I have come to know myself as someone who can get myself out of my own way. When I saw this clip this morning, I saw myself as someone who could do, who IS following the impossible dream.

    Beautiful, inspiring.

  • Yo, this is like the best song ever made, yeah?

  • I love to watch this play again and again

  • This is one of the best musicals ever, i would love to see it live

  • Watched this for the first time ever in my Spanish class, probably one of my favorite movies now :D

  • Why ios there a dislike button for this song D=?!

  • Eternal glory and respect, Mr. O'Toole... We will never forget You! Never!

  • This is one of the most stirring broadway musicals put to film. That Peter O'Toole & Sophia Loren were not trained singers in the traditional sense made it all the better. When Mr. O'Toole sings "Dulcimea," and Miss Loren sings "Aldonza," I am immediately swept away. O'Toole & James Coco singing "I, Don Quixote" is a marvel! I adore this movie musical!

  • truly epic! ♥:)

  • Whenever I seem to lack the strength to face another day, I listen to this music, and remember that fighting for our dreams is always worthy...

  • @pedro081182 unless the dream involves mass murder or something else not so good, then you really should shelve it and find another

  • THIS IS TRULY HOW I PLAY A PALADIN.

  • @IcarusTrebonius It must make everyone else feel like a squire next to your knight. :-)

  • @IcarusTrebonius Bored to Death!

  • @IcarusTrebonius I cant thumbs up your comment enough.

  • 32 People out there must be Justin Bieber fans. Degrading quality of music is so disappointing.

  • FABULOUS, SIMPLY FABULOUS! This is my quest....to follow that star....

It's so inspirational, so simple yet so deep. I will always love it so much. The marvel that is Peter O'Toole continues to enchant forevermore (We took Aqaba!).

  • powerful song that goes like a bullet straight to my heart, makes me happy and sad, I would like to be free of all bondage and be like Don Quixote, wonderful music, a classic, and of course I cry like a river

  • How did he not get an Oscar for this????

  • @megarouge2001 He did not receive an Oscar because, while he sang it beautifully, his facial expression never changed once. He never moved, never twitched, never really emoted in a non-vocal way. He was a brilliant singer, and was cast for that rather than his acting. In a musical, the actors are often cast for one or the other, not both. Some are great actors and not-so-great singers, and some are great singers and passable actors. They're not bad at either, they're just not EPIC at both.

  • @Kremzeek217

Really? You're saying Peter O'Toole isn't a strong actor? Might want to re-think that stance...

  • @Kremzeek217 Ive understood that Peter OToole didnt sing this, but a professional singer, and thats why neither could receive the the academy award.

  • best edition of this song

  • Wonderful ending to this movie.

Leaving goodness and thought when you leave.

  • The Man of La Mancha was unbelievably Brave. Bravo Peter and Sophia!

  • BEAutiful! I am going to watch the rest of this now!

  • Awesome song, awesome voice, looks like a thunderbirds puppet though lol

  • felejthetetlen zene, és felejthetetlen előadok- művészek:csodaszép .

    köszönöm

  • this highly motivates the soul

  • Our Christian Living book told us to watch this. haha ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Such a classic. Put into symphonic word, ballet, opera and musical. The quest for ideal and fight for own ideal is perhaps something shared by all men, across all cultures.

  • Why were they leaving the jail in the end? Were they going to be executed by the Inquisition?

  • @Sulla2300 As I recall, they were going to their trial. What happened next is left to the audience's imagination. I think O'Toole's character is supposed to be Miguel de Cervantes, the writer of Don Quixote, so it would seem he lived to finish his story... but it''s been awhile since I saw the movie. (You could go Google a movie synopsis...)

  • A la memoria de mi maestra de piano de West Los Angeles College ( Culver City) Gladys Jackson ....

  • @Anynom Amen to that. Richard Kiley should have performed this movie.

  • @richdeus SPAM!!!!!

  • What is sickness to the body of a Knight Errant?

    What matter wounds?

For each time he falls he shall RISE AGAIN

    And woe to the wicked!

    Beautiful, Peter O'Toole.

  • is it just me but are these words to live by?

  • AWESOME!!!

  • Un capolavoro che tocca nel più profondo il cuore...

    Grazie

  • BRB Crying Forever.

  • dude!... I mean... what the f@ck!

  • This is the most inspiring training speech a master could ever give.

  • It is much better to have a quixotic outlook of the world than a pessimistic one, I'll believe that until my dying day!

  • @RoyalTebowDoom

That's a false dichotomy. Seek reality on its own terms.

  • O'Toole! i didn't know you had it in you! Fabulous!

  • This was such a fantastic scene that always move me. So beautifully played!

  • Miluju Petera O´Toola !!!!!!!

  • at 5:15 i want to stand and applaud already lol

  • @VapeCartel I'd argue that it wasn't madness. He only saw reality differently from everyone else. Can you watch this video and honestly tell me that he wasn't a knight errant? Because he WAS.

  • @ArentWeInAPickle I argue that the way everyone else sees the world is madness, and the way of Don Quixote is sanity. The way we call sane causes pain and suffering, to those who "win" as well as those who lose.

That is the way Aldonza has been treated all her life. Then comes don Quixote, treats her with respect, and she is reborn as Dulcinea, better, stronger and happier than she was before. I claim that it is insane to do any other way, since its insane to choose failure over success.

  • when he says to be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause means to be willing to be hate by people for doing the right thing

  • Like the Dark Knight @mrmasterice1

  • He should have been awarded an OSCAR , its only fair :(

  • The impossible fight he talks about in this song is the fight against Satan, the great deceiver that has power over this world. The quest is the quest for truth, the only way to overcome the deceiving devil/mind. Go to TRUTHcontest(dot)com and read The Present to learn the truth.

  • @vividDC

While that it a good interpretation, may I suggest something? When he talks of "beating the unbeatable foe" I believe he is talking about those who choose mammon over truth. During this time the Spanish Inquisition was wrongly murdering people (even christians) in the name of Christ. He challenged those to look at everything differently, and to follow the path that is right...no matter who is with you.

  • @vividDC You have already lost, and you have stopped fighting. You just dont realize it, because you believe you are fighting a known enemy.

The only way to fight evil is not to know what you are fighting. You can only see truth which is true at the moment.

If you think of the future or the past, you see something that is not now, or not anymore.

    Thats why its deceiving.

A great way to deceive, is to tell the truth, because people believe in it. Yet belief is the basis of deceiving.

  • nagyon szép,gyönyörű.:)

  • @mitomke It's O'Toole, however, O'Toole couldn't sing so the voice is Simon Gilbert.

  • This is the greatest ever a reason to live your life a way a code a total good thing

  • I cry.

  • Is that Peter O'Toole, I get him mixed up with Richard Harris often?

  • It is the pity of life that such heroes and heroines pass from our lives and fade away. Death is a terrible reality that we all must face. Don Quixote faced it with dignity and courage. Death for him has no sting. Richard Harris has become immortal in this performance. Sophia Lorenz is perfect as Dulcinea del Toboso, she has portrayed the lady, showing that he has won her heart. What a stirring song in solidarity against the foe. Even so today we face these enemies who seek to take away our life

  • @mitomke However on the book Dulcinea exists only on the crazyness of Don Quijote, she is another caracther that laughs at him and cannot understand him.

  • Bravo

  • 2 words: goose bumps

  • 30 now.

  • Who really doesn't like it? This is such a wonderful movie/play and song. Touching. I would hate to not like this, personally.

  • I love this musical!

  • i love this song!!!!!!!!!! so inspirational

  • Rubbish!

  • LOL Turn on the captions!!

  • M E R A V I G L I O S A

    Grazie :)

  • I really enjoy o'toole's version of quixote the best... maybe its because I havent seen every other play of man of la mancha on broadway.... or sip tea with one pinky in the air... or have pretentious conversations around regular schmoes in restaurants regarding gilbert and sullivan just to look smarter and sophisticated... but to me o'toole IS don quixote.

  • @PassengersMusic777 You should do yourself a favor and look at youtube clips of either Richard Kiely or Brian Stokes Mitchell doing this song...and then go see a staged performance.

  • @pjameson51 I have seen some clips of kiley or mitchell (I forget) do this piece... but o'toole's version just seems to fit in so much nicely (though I heard he isnt even the singer). As for a staged performance, why? Thats the reason I have the bloody movie, so I dont need to get dressed and see a stage performance. Its just preference I suppose

  • This song never fails to move me to near tears.

  • "What good is dreaming it, if you don't actually do it?"

    - Honda

  • This made me cry. It is so beautiful.

  • The 29 people who disliked this probably broke down in tears from it's true and beautiful message.

  • 29 people don't want to reach the unreachable star.

  • Amazing

  • The perfect song to explain the strength of the human spirit.

  • This is actually the best version of the song I've heard. In my opinion.

  • This is a song to live by. Actually, THE song to live by.

  • I was singing this song in my dream a few nights ago... I was flying above a group of artists/actors singing it as well...holding hands, moving in circles... It was very emotional. I just love this song... I haven't heard it in a long time... & my dream reminded me of it... Thank you.
