Every time I view this I begin to get teary eyed. Its The way he convinced them to dream, and Sancho and Dulcinea stayed beside him at the end. Scary how in the inquisition Cervantes also made the people dream. Its good theater. A great tale and an even better song. =D
It is a story about a dreamer, an idealist, whom in a theater production can be so pure and idealistic. Some whom knew me three years ago, may think this described me as I was once very idealistic, probably a bit naive, but it is my history, not my present self. Sincerely, Jason Lowen
Incredible. This is the only version that actually sent shivers down my spine. He didn't even make grand hand gestures. Just the subtly and fantastic orchestra absolutely blows me away.
Please HELP! My Aunt just died and this was her all time fav! She named her dog Sancho, her cat Dulcinea, loved Impossible Dream, her home was all decorated as Don Quixote - plaque "La Casa de Hombre de LaMancha".
Anyways I am writing a bio/obit...Please explain what this meant "Soft and fair, my friends; in last year's nests there are no birds this year."
@Rnjax1 A little late, but perhaps for next year's memorial? It means that we have the tendency to draw on past experiences to prepare us for the future, but we must realize that this method is fallible. Just because there were birds in the nests last year doesn't mean there are now. Hence, it is more powerful to dream of future possibilities, and prepare for what we would love to happen. Just as fallible, but the only real tragedy is if the opportunity comes your way, and you cannot accept it.
The Broadway original Quixote Richard Kiley became my hero when I was a very young man after listening to the released recording of "La Mancha". I would listen to it for hours on end. When this film came out I was in my early '20's and it fell completely flat to me because I expected the robust dramatic wide sound of Kiley and totally forgot about this version. But now almost 40 years later and having had serious vocal training, I really like this version too. Thanks for posting it.

@richardmumolo But Peter O'Toole did not do the singing, Richard Kiley is better than O'Toole or Placido Domingo. If this is to be revived we need another Kiley.
This gets me sad, but I realize "Man of La Mancha" stood for something more than money, he died poor, but rather be happy and have money as no one desires to be poor. Sam sung.

Currently running sound and lights (yeah, at the same time), for a production of this musical and this has got to be my favorite song in the show. Though a lot of it's likable.
Sometimes, madness is better than sanity. The unique thinking that brought us technology and advances civilizations could have, in the past, been called madness. If normal thinking stems progress and creativity, then I embrace the chaos of creativity and madness. This I truly believe.
@BeauDaltonJordan I love this musical and this song. I saw this musical on Broadway starring Brian Stokes Mitchell, who was very good and I've listened repeatedly to the earlier version on cd starring the magnificent Richard Kiley. Kiley's rendention of "IMPOSSIBLE DREAM" bring tears to a person's eyes. That why I can't stand the movie version. I love Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren, but neither one of them could sing--and this is a singer's musical. My God,they couldn't hired Richard Kiley.
love this song <3 these types of songs really gives people hope and courage, when they are much needed-way better than modern music. makes me wish the world would be a better place :D
When one is young…..life seems like a long long road ahead…but when one ages and is seeing the path nearing its end….this masterful work played by Peter O'toole is so very encouraging! I feel like I can still right the unrightable wrong!! thank you for posting it…..
When I saw this in '67, I cried. Not out of the glory of the impossible dream, but out of the thought that I didn't have the courage or the integrity to follow that dream. "To love pure and chaste from afar" was so far out of my league that I saw myself as hopeless.
In recent years I have come to know myself as someone who can get myself out of my own way. When I saw this clip this morning, I saw myself as someone who could do, who IS following the impossible dream.
This is one of the most stirring broadway musicals put to film. That Peter O'Toole & Sophia Loren were not trained singers in the traditional sense made it all the better. When Mr. O'Toole sings "Dulcimea," and Miss Loren sings "Aldonza," I am immediately swept away. O'Toole & James Coco singing "I, Don Quixote" is a marvel! I adore this movie musical!
FABULOUS, SIMPLY FABULOUS! This is my quest....to follow that star....

powerful song that goes like a bullet straight to my heart, makes me happy and sad, I would like to be free of all bondage and be like Don Quixote, wonderful music, a classic, and of course I cry like a river
@megarouge2001 He did not receive an Oscar because, while he sang it beautifully, his facial expression never changed once. He never moved, never twitched, never really emoted in a non-vocal way. He was a brilliant singer, and was cast for that rather than his acting. In a musical, the actors are often cast for one or the other, not both. Some are great actors and not-so-great singers, and some are great singers and passable actors. They're not bad at either, they're just not EPIC at both.
Such a classic. Put into symphonic word, ballet, opera and musical. The quest for ideal and fight for own ideal is perhaps something shared by all men, across all cultures.
@Sulla2300 As I recall, they were going to their trial. What happened next is left to the audience's imagination. I think O'Toole's character is supposed to be Miguel de Cervantes, the writer of Don Quixote, so it would seem he lived to finish his story... but it''s been awhile since I saw the movie. (You could go Google a movie synopsis...)
@VapeCartel I'd argue that it wasn't madness. He only saw reality differently from everyone else. Can you watch this video and honestly tell me that he wasn't a knight errant? Because he WAS.
@ArentWeInAPickle I argue that the way everyone else sees the world is madness, and the way of Don Quixote is sanity. The way we call sane causes pain and suffering, to those who "win" as well as those who lose.
That is the way Aldonza has been treated all her life. Then comes don Quixote, treats her with respect, and she is reborn as Dulcinea, better, stronger and happier than she was before. I claim that it is insane to do any other way, since its insane to choose failure over success.
The impossible fight he talks about in this song is the fight against Satan, the great deceiver that has power over this world. The quest is the quest for truth, the only way to overcome the deceiving devil/mind. Go to TRUTHcontest(dot)com and read The Present to learn the truth.
While that it a good interpretation, may I suggest something? When he talks of "beating the unbeatable foe" I believe he is talking about those who choose mammon over truth. During this time the Spanish Inquisition was wrongly murdering people (even christians) in the name of Christ. He challenged those to look at everything differently, and to follow the path that is right...no matter who is with you.
@TheKenTerry Yes - mammon is a manifestation of the devil/mind. I think you would be interested in reading the book I suggested - The Present (with religion) at truthcontest(dot)com - It has a whole section on Satan.
It is the pity of life that such heroes and heroines pass from our lives and fade away. Death is a terrible reality that we all must face. Don Quixote faced it with dignity and courage. Death for him has no sting. Richard Harris has become immortal in this performance. Sophia Lorenz is perfect as Dulcinea del Toboso, she has portrayed the lady, showing that he has won her heart. What a stirring song in solidarity against the foe. Even so today we face these enemies who seek to take away our life
@mitomke However on the book Dulcinea exists only on the crazyness of Don Quijote, she is another caracther that laughs at him and cannot understand him.
I really enjoy o'toole's version of quixote the best... maybe its because I havent seen every other play of man of la mancha on broadway.... or sip tea with one pinky in the air... or have pretentious conversations around regular schmoes in restaurants regarding gilbert and sullivan just to look smarter and sophisticated... but to me o'toole IS don quixote.
@PassengersMusic777 You should do yourself a favor and look at youtube clips of either Richard Kiely or Brian Stokes Mitchell doing this song...and then go see a staged performance.
@pjameson51 I have seen some clips of kiley or mitchell (I forget) do this piece... but o'toole's version just seems to fit in so much nicely (though I heard he isnt even the singer). As for a staged performance, why? Thats the reason I have the bloody movie, so I dont need to get dressed and see a stage performance. Its just preference I suppose
I was singing this song in my dream a few nights ago... I was flying above a group of artists/actors singing it as well...holding hands, moving in circles... It was very emotional. I just love this song... I haven't heard it in a long time... & my dream reminded me of it... Thank you.
O'Toole's voice was dubbed by Simon Gilbert, but it takes nothing away from his great acting. One of my favorites.

Notice the zero eye blinking, the focussed eyes and body.
This adds to the intensity of deliverance and message.
Brought into today's performance, simply direct the eyes to the camera,
and be real, natural but just as intense and urgent in the intent.
Awesome.

It is much better to have a quixotic outlook of the world than a pessimistic one, I'll believe that until my dying day!

@RoyalTebowDoom
That's a false dichotomy. Seek reality on its own terms.

@VapeCartel I'd argue that it wasn't madness. He only saw reality differently from everyone else. Can you watch this video and honestly tell me that he wasn't a knight errant? Because he WAS.
ArentWeInAPickle 7 months ago 2

@vividDC

I think you would be interested in reading the book I suggested - The Present (with religion) at truthcontest(dot)com - It has a whole section on Satan.
vividDC 7 months ago
@vividDC You have already lost, and you have stopped fighting. You just dont realize it, because you believe you are fighting a known enemy.
The only way to fight evil is not to know what you are fighting. You can only see truth which is true at the moment.
If you think of the future or the past, you see something that is not now, or not anymore.
Thats why its deceiving.
A great way to deceive, is to tell the truth, because people believe in it. Yet belief is the basis of deceiving.

@mitomke It's O'Toole, however, O'Toole couldn't sing so the voice is Simon Gilbert.

Is that Peter O'Toole, I get him mixed up with Richard Harris often?
mitomke 7 months ago 2
It is the pity of life that such heroes and heroines pass from our lives and fade away. Death is a terrible reality that we all must face. Don Quixote faced it with dignity and courage. Death for him has no sting. Richard Harris has become immortal in this performance. Sophia Lorenz is perfect as Dulcinea del Toboso, she has portrayed the lady, showing that he has won her heart. What a stirring song in solidarity against the foe. Even so today we face these enemies who seek to take away our life
mitomke 7 months ago 2
@mitomke However on the book Dulcinea exists only on the crazyness of Don Quijote, she is another caracther that laughs at him and cannot understand him.

I really enjoy o'toole's version of quixote the best... maybe its because I havent seen every other play of man of la mancha on broadway.... or sip tea with one pinky in the air... or have pretentious conversations around regular schmoes in restaurants regarding gilbert and sullivan just to look smarter and sophisticated... but to me o'toole IS don quixote.
PassengersMusic777 8 months ago 4
@PassengersMusic777 You should do yourself a favor and look at youtube clips of either Richard Kiely or Brian Stokes Mitchell doing this song...and then go see a staged performance.
pjameson51 6 months ago

Thank you.
