Apparently if you want to stay with Alistair on anything other than human noble, Alistair can't be king and there is a certain option you have to choose when he meets his sister.

@GDJoppa I tried that before Alistair says that the people won't accept someone who doesn't come from a noble or royal family. Only the human noble female can marry Alistair
