i didnt like this album much when i first heard it i thought it sounded a bit like b-sides or lesser version of his classic albums like innervisions and songs in the key but it's actually a brilliant album and this is one of the better songs although it sounds like mistra know it all - not a bad thing though!
I am a big Hov fan and you can't deny his genius. He has put out at least three classical albums, and other albums that are good. However, stevie put out 5 consecutive classic albums. I don't think any artist can say that. Michael Jackson came close with OTW, Thriller, Bad and maybe Dangerous, but Stevie's classic period albums are all certified classics.
Never EVER tire of hearing this, and from start to amazing finish. Just let it wash over you and get to seriously shaking all over in that STEVIE groove...
When I heard this 37 years ago, I knew Stevie was here to stay. Thank you Stevie. What range in the disco era. It was another sign that you were signed, sealed and delivered.
stevie actually wrote this and three other albums in short sucession after a massive car crash and it was a miracle he survived- innvervisions, talking book, music of my mind & fullfilingness first finale) , not talked about?? have you been living in a cave??
@needadrinknow What I've heard is that it was a freak accident involving a logging truck where a strap broke, sending giant timbers flying down the highway- including one into Stevie's car. Can you imagine?!?!?!?
I personally know what Stevie is singing about. I know what he was feeling when he song this song. Sometimes you don't want a person to go because it hurts. But come to think of it, it would hurt more if you stay in an unhappy relationship.
this song makes me so happy! like all of his songs, it's just the perfect blend of soul, funk, and pop. i've become obsessed with him lately. why did it take me so long?
@bmclaugh Never heard this song till a short while ago when a friend played it for me and consequenty I always associate it with him. My friend is paralysed from the chest down, and is in a wheelchair yet a more cheerful and upbeat person you'll seldom meet. It was our mutual love of music which sparked the friendship. Like Stevie he is proof that adversity can bring out the best in people. Jill x
He's always smiling on his album covers, and that reflects the peace that thrives inside that soul of his.
if we ever go to heaven, i think we will have all his albums and all eternity to listen to them, without nagging people or loud neighbors disturbing our peace of soul, please, make way in your soul for this man, unbelievable how heaven can be sung by a mere mortal, Stevie Wonder, no words can give a fraction of an inch of what he is.
i found some old review of this album somewhere and the critics were saying things like "even though its a good album, its not a strong follow-up to The Talking Book..theres no Superstitution...there's no 'I Believe (When I Fall In Love)" Lol i just laughed bc i know the type of ppl who only like Stevie for Superstition don't really like much of his other music. Theyre usually the type who dont even like soul & funk, so to me their opinion bears no damn weight. FFF is a GENIUS album thru & thru.
@rtoriq Superstition pisses me off. His greatest hits suck. The real genius is tucked away on talking book, Innervisions, Songs in the key of life, FFF, and Music of my mind. No one will ever approach the kind of fucking awesomeness Stevie Wonder exudes. Hamsterknight ... FOAD.
@ClownenJac73 Man i had to dig up my comment bc i don't even remember that i said, lol. And i totally forgot where i got the review from (i think the source was quoted in Wiki). But i think i was paraphrasing, and their point being nothing that topped "Talking Book" up to that point. Foolishness anyways. CORRECTION: Found out that critique i quoted was for INNERVISIONS; not FFF! Jon Tiven from Circus Magazine.
And of course you realize that Innervisions is considered one of the best Albums ever made.:) Still Fulfillingness' First Finale is one of Stevies best.
i fell head over heels for stevie. wanted to marry him. his madison square garden concert was the first concert i ever went to. my friend brian miller took me. often wonder how he's doing. but shall always be grateful for the fact that he took me to see the greatest performer ever. love you, bri. hope you're doing well.
This, and every other Stevie Wonder album/song is pure gold. His music defies genre. His talent is not even definable, it's on another plane, entirely.
@Sybenett I'm a HUGE Mr.Wonderful fan...and you're right this isn't Jay-Z...but I'm also a HUGE Jay-Z fan and to try to discredit his lyrical genius is ludicrous. Even if you're not a fan of the genre that is hip hop/rap whatever you want to call it, Shawn Carter is one of the best lyricists EVER!!
@zuneloader Talk to me when he can sing, write, and play an instrument and hold sold out concerts at Madison Square Garden like Prince. I don't pay admission for shows to hear a lyricist I paid admission to hear a musician perform and play an instrument and sing.
@Sybenett If you prefer to have your artist work every aspect of the entertaining process (sing, play, dance) then so be it. But do you take anything away from Stevie because he doesn't dance? No. And Jay-Z has sold out the Garden...in a day! He even has a line about it..."You gotta pardon Jay for sell'n out the Garden in a day. I'm like a young Marvin in his hay." And he's also put out AT LEAST one album every year since 1996. Understand that I too put Mr.Wonderful in a league all his own, but...
i so understand @corner10pro i was listening to this at the age of 15 with the love of my life . i went on to marry him and he turned alcoholic . but this song is so us . miss my 15 year old love

stevie said a good song is one that evokes the same emotion for him everytime he hears it played back...even years later...thats how he releases his songs....this song altho i love it very much... was & is very hard 4 me to listen to cuz of my breakup etc...my soul screamed this song 2 her...she didnt hear me tho...she left.... ~raghkstar
me too man :) stevie shows us soo much i think. and has given us soo many important messages with his songwriting, but also how we should be, he shares his talent and is humble down to earth you know everything hes a wonderful man and musically one of the greatest of all time.
@lesscunning It was HUGE back in 1974, but unfortunately now we have been overrun with rap and hip hop....and lots of negative lyrics, which just bring me down. Back in Stevie's day it was all about LOVE, break ups, make ups, etc. Simple, but so touching...please don't go; I'd be sad and blue! And such musicianship....love you Stevie forever!!!!!
@lesscunning Cuz Fulfillingness First Finale is Underrated thats why it's not talked about It's better than Talking Book and Innervisions IMO and those are great albums
Bottom Line: The talent that came from Hitsville, USA is unsurpassed beyond any record label ever. The songwritting carreers of Smokey Robinson, Berry Gordy, Holland , Dozier, & Holland, Marvin Gaye, Norman Witfiield, Ashford & Simpson and of course the "The 8th Wonder of the World" are beyond compare. Since the inception of Motown, music has never been and never will be the same. Let's make sure our children remember that! Love & Social change has always been the message, teach it!
I wonder why am filled with so much love. It's the music that influenced me. The music my mom listened to that talked about love, devotion, passion. What my mom and dad couldn't teach me, the music did. Thank you Stevie, Marvin, Chaka, Luther, the O'Jays,. Love lives in the lyrics. Lessons live in the music.
Yep, and that was not just this album, but all five albums of his classic period, from Music Of My Mind right on up to Songs In The Key of Life. In fact, almost all of Stevie's albums starting with For Once In My Life all the way through A Time To Love have an incredibly arch-like feeling from start to finish, but none moreso than this album, Innervisions and Songs In The Key Of Life.
true, it's just yet another facet of his genius. If their is one thing an artist like Prince certainly needed it was a taste for arranging an albums songs. His closing is usually anti-climactic, unlike Stevie's who's always killer(lookin for another pure love, he's misstra..., please don't go, etc)
I recently started dating this girl who spend last weekend with me. I had such a good time with her and I knew the end of the weekend was coming soon and this song sums up how I felt while thinking about her leaving to return home. You're the greatest Stevie!
one of my all time favorite songs by Stevie. Please don't go if you should go I'll be sad and blue. This song brings back fond memories of the times I used to sit and listen to this album in my brothers room used to always make me cry still does.. you are and forever will be the best there is anywhere Stevie you are stuly amazing.
ive been a fan since i was 5 and have never heard this song! lol! i guess thats the magic of stevie, theres always hidden gems to discover! i love you stevie xxx
Music Of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Fullfilliness First finale, and Songs In The Key Of Life...as great a five album sequence as any in the history of r&b or pop music...maybe the greatest
What anyone born after 1965 may not realize is that this vinyl LP was pressed with no gaps between the tracks, therefore all tracks flowed into each other in a very specific order. The Finale Experience opened with You Havent Done Nothing on side 1. The finale was this track, Please Dont Go.
We would have to wait 25 months before another LP was released by 'the greatest individual talent of the modern music era', Stevie.
Know all this as you listen, to experience it as we did back in 1974.
Actually, I think that next to Jimi Hendrix's "gapless" album "Electric Ladyland", this is the best of all Gapless albums. The transition from Boogie On Regae Woman to Creapin' is possibly the most beautifull 2 songs ever. But Please Don't Go is definately my favorite upbeat Stevie. Shame there's no video... The soul, the Harmonica, the chorus at the end and the pure Stevie emotion... So f'in' good. Why has this song gone so un-noticed? It's just like Love Having You Around (Music of my Mind)
A great observation mdoddio. Jimi's ELL opened the ears of r&b artists to the concept of the album as an artistic statement above and beyond the 45rpm single. A complete sound portrait. It was one thing for the Beatles to do it w/SGT Pepper. But i think Jimi's ELL helped turn Stevie's (and Marvin's) mind on to the concept...and by extension the rest of the r&b world...Stevie actually jammed w/ Jimi on one occasion.
He's everywhere!!! I have so much Stevie to discover....you've changed my life johnniewalker23..I really appreciate it to say the very least my friend
Hi Ezkeel - I couldn't locate the eye of Heru, but I'm not surprised that Stevie would have it on his album cover. Although he's blind since birth, he is sooooo insightful. In addition, we are a very SPIRITUAL people, so I'm not surprised at all.
This album was not underrated - it was always accepted as an integral of his most fertile "genius" period - every song on it was, and is great - over 30 years after it was recorded - as timeless as the Beatles - as Gershwin - as Ellington - as Dylan - absolute perfection. Stevie Wonder is a gift to the human race from the heavens!!!!!
Definately never under-rated. Hit #1 on the Billboard Ntl Chart for all music, not just R&B. Dang near swept the Grammy's for 1974; 1st single hit #1, first 2 singles went gold.
Memories are simply poorer these days due to ADD/ADHD
The guys at rags like Rolling Stone Mag just cant relate or are too young.
So who were his contemporary rivals in the mainstream at the time? and did black people consider Stevie to be the biggest act(even bigger than say Earth wind and fire, or Marvin Gaye)?
Stevie was a media darling, they loved him. His musical genius was unrivaled. This was a pre-digital era when true musicianship reigned, few artists could sing & compose as well as, and play as many instruments as well as Stevie.
He had no rivalries. In award competition where only peers & industry folks voted, they ceded almost* every award in all categories to him from 1973-1976.
Legendary Paul Simon thanked Stevie for not releasing an LP in 1975, allowing Paul to win instead.
It was more than just some half-decade Love Fest. Stevie helped launch Minnie Riperton, Chaka Khan & Rufus, Denise Williams, Michael Sembello; toured with Rolling Stones, and provided great material for Aretha, Roberta Flack, Jermaine Jackson, Sergio Mendes, Taj Mahal. Musical luminaries from the 50s & 60s enjoyed success in covering his ballads in the 70s & 80s.
Nobody could rival Stevie. It was a joy to be a teen and young adult falling in love to his tunes. I often bought two of his albums so I would have a back up if one was scratched. It is disappointing to hear a lot of the crap that is considered music nowadays. Back in the day, if you didnt have talent you didnt make it in music.
I've always considered Stevie to be the biggest and the best. EWF was a huge group of musicians who collectivley were great but none can match stevie's talent to make a whole album alone
Pretty sure Stevie was the ultimate black performer (and certainly one of the biggest performers in general) during his heyday. In fact, when MJ became bigger than life, people were calling him the next Stevie Wonder, which is a testament to how talented BOTH guys were/are.
Stevie's music is so timeless that it reflects the karma of life! ... No matter what the decade is of his music, you can turn some stevie on and it sounds and feels just like new! ... all over again. This man has a song for everyday, every moment and every situation we go through. No doubt a stevie song will either encourage you and keep you happy through a great time or keep you calm and collected through a sad and down time. TRULY A GENIUS!
one of a kind timeless

Stevie Wonder is a gift to the human race from the heavens!!!!!
mhertz25 3 years ago 9
Definately never under-rated. Hit #1 on the Billboard Ntl Chart for all music, not just R&B. Dang near swept the Grammy's for 1974; 1st single hit #1, first 2 singles went gold.
Memories are simply poorer these days due to ADD/ADHD
The guys at rags like Rolling Stone Mag just cant relate or are too young.

So who were his contemporary rivals in the mainstream at the time? and did black people consider Stevie to be the biggest act(even bigger than say Earth wind and fire, or Marvin Gaye)?
Blackmace 3 years ago

BigDave91393 2 years ago 3
