triptechb, See this video first: Violin Method: Tuning Your Violin (preparing for violin lesson #1). Even that has a lot of info (talking) in it though.
@professorV Why that was exactly what I was looking for! I usually play bass, but was recently given a severely out of tune violin and had no idea what octave it was supposed to be in. Thank you for your reply, and thank you for posting such a wealth of information.
Hey Professsor, I use two fine tuners..I recently removed my A-string fine tuner..but the problem is I can't tune it with the peg..it keeps sliding back..I've watched part1 of this video and did exactly as you've mentioned..But my peg keeps sliding back..please help...
are you applying pressure WHILE you turn the pegs back into place? the idea is that you should be playing/plucking the string until AND turning the peg at the same time, and when you find the right note you want, you turn the peg AND apply pressure at the same time as you are turning it inwards so that the peg sticks and does not unwind.
My problem is that sometimes my string is too untuned and when i turn the black thing at the right note, the black thing slides back and the note is gone means that i can't stuck the black thing. PLEASE HELP!
Good video. However, with a KORG electronic guitar/ bass tuner, which setting do I use to tune the violin, guitar or bass? Also, is the 5th string on the guitar (A string) the same as the A string on the violin? Or vice versa with the A string on a bass?
Thanks a lot professorv, it really help me, my bridge was warped, so the sound was not so good, and i didn't know why. thanks for the tips. and keep up the great job!!!
Vous parlez un peu du française au espanol, J'ai acheté un violon dans un bazar, une copie de Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis avec un son magnifique, il etait tout cassé, J'ai bien de le reparé. I just bought my violin this week, just a little $100 cheapo to see if I like it at all. It's the first stringed instrument I've owned, and tuning has been a nightmare! So it's reassuring to hear a professional say it's not something you should just be able to do right away. Wonderful lessons all around, Professor.
Hi Prof.V, my son and I appreciate you lessons! What is your take on the new Knilling Perfection Pegs? Do you like them? We have been playing for a year in Oct.
Can you show us how to insert new strings correctly too? -Maybe we should wait till your current strings are worn out.. X)
And I would like to ask, when I use gut strings, they get out of tune very very very very very very often (a couple of times in an hour).. Any advice on that?
When I mentioned a 'fat' bridge, it's in reference to a student bridge that is not finished the way a professional bridge is. They have a rough look to them and are often thicker. Now days, many student model violins have better fittings then in the past though. Sorry I was not clear.
Hi Mr Todd, can I do it myself to make my own thin bridge? it seems our violin maker doesn really pay much attention on it? do you have any good suggestions? by the way, i i notice the difference between my old violin vs my hofner, its with the nuts near the peg box... the old one has a higher level of the nuts so i guess that does affect the way i press the string, which is a bit harder to press? should that be brought down abit?or it is just normal? thanks in advance
Hi Pikachoi, I think a violin maker/repair person should do any work required on a violin, otherwise you could end up with a real mess. Do not worry about the thickness of the bridge - I should not have mentioned it. If the violin is hard to play, have a repair person look at the instrument and give you some advice. It should be easy to play, without any buzzing (if the nut, strings, or brigde are too low the string will buzz). Hope that helps.
While informative, in the whole of two videos so far, there has been no actual tuning.

I was just wondering- does using the pegs rather than fine tuners affect how long your strings will last?
Thanks for your lessons- they're great help!

the Bastard who tune my violin almost broke it
he tightened the strings too much causing the bridge to be deformed and causing it to fly out and hit the wood of my violin.
that bastard
that is why i think of buying an electric tuner
and may i ask if it is okay if i use a guitar tuner on tuning a violin or not?
martian067 3 years ago
well unless it eletric it shouldn't matter >.> a tuner for strings just listens to the vibratons......i dont know tho but i think im right

Thanks for the lesson! Should the pegs be vertical purely to make turning them easier, or is there a more technical reason?
GuitarJoe07 3 years ago
Hi, It makes it much easier to grab/hold. Thanks for pointing that out!
