the opening solo were a demonstration of "garota de ipanema" brazillian music very popular. many musicians play this song like diana krall, and many other musicians who plays blues and similar generes
@TurkiyeCumhurbaskani The solo's were tastefully done. Too many guitarists treat solo time like a drive by shooting. Pull the trigger and spray bullets out there. Not this time. Andy played it close to the hip and didn't let the solo get in the way of the song. Each note fit the song (except for the note-a-thon at 6:11). Steve took his technique and slid it right into the groove as well. I dig it.
@tetragramatonadr Malmsteen can play harmonic minor scale and stop. There's and abism between him and Timmons. Timmons is really melodic, Malmsteen is all scalar, and always the same scale, don't you think?
@112358miau we'll malmsteen is one of the most musically intelligent people around today, he could play any scale or chord know to man, he just picks what he needs for his songs
@b0b1919 Yes, the only diference is pentatonic= 1,3,4,5,7. You only change the 2nd and 6th for all modes, harmonic is a bit diferent, so most of the scales used are minor pentatonic + something
@SuperKagey no way man, he uses stiletto and lonestar! Use the stiletto, lonestar is kinda 1-dimensional (I've played through them a lot). Great for that melancholy blues tone and a great clean but it's not memorable IMO
@Kirok: spot on comment. Timmons solo is completely different from any other i've heard over this song. Simply put its the shizz. Is it just me or does Vai seem to be trying to match the inventivness but failing and then pullin out one of his standard licks at 4:14 in an attempt to recover?
Actually, his "standard lick" that you probably CAN'T play, is the solo he did in G3 Live in Denver back in 03'. Get your facts straight before you comment, he doesnt use that "standard lick" every time... Hes just good at it
@Mofozofo youve just backed up my point? He tried something new it didnt quite work aswel, so he used one of his licks he used before 'G3 Live in Denver' which he knows will work? How does he know it will work? because its a standard lick which he used before... For it to work he'd have to be good at it which he knows he is so he uses it to attempt to recover?
The first two choruses of Timmons' opening solo were CELESTIAL. What an amazing thing to hear such melodic inventiveness and compositional discipline from a guy who can spray 32nd notes all over the place. Of all the post-Satch axe virtuosos, I think he's the most melodic.
@Kirok I've always said this same thing of Andy. Of all the virtuoso guitarists, I've always felt that he brings the strongest sense of melody to the table...
@Kirok To be honest the list of greatest guitarists ever pretty much has to be anyone who's played with g3 (with a few exceptions). Then the order depends on whether you prefer melodic or speed.
@Kirok You used a lot of flowery adjectives right there. I agree though, Timmons is incredible. While he could crush this song with a lot of fast notes, he chooses not to. Well done.

No.. The drums come in at the right time lol. I've heard several versions of this song a load of times. They come in at the right time.
In most of versions of the song, the vocals don't come in that early (they do come in that early in the original though) so maybe that could be a throw-off. But the intro isn't supposed to have any drums until the part where they come in so I don't see why you're laughing at the drummer for playing the song correctly.
Befor Steve Vai came and played with Andy, The PRS Band including Paul Reed Smith himself, Bernie Marsden (Ex-Whitesnake;) and John Wesley had a jam with Andy.
Es war der Hammer. Da ich studierter Musiker bin, kannte ich vieles. Aber für die Amateure gab es viel neues. Gahahahaha, the drummer missing half the intro was hilarious, halfway through it liked tweak to him that he was supposed to be playing.
charlesneedham 2 years ago
Ever heard the original version? It's supposed to be that way.
walkalloveryou 2 years ago
Oh? From listening to the original it seems that the drums cut in maybe half a measure quicker than they do here.
charlesneedham 2 years ago
You're right, could be a mistake. But it's not like this is a note for note cover, so it might just be the interpretation.
walkalloveryou 2 years ago
It very well could be, I mean these are all world class musicians, it seems unlikely they would make mistakes.
charlesneedham 2 years ago
Or maybe they sound great anyways? They have way too much other music to play on a daily basis. So don't respect perfection in covers.
