I doubt that an armed conflict will ensue as a result of sovereign claims over the arctic. In the past, these claims have been disputed and settled in the U.N. quite successfully.

As Russia becomes the acknowledged pioneer of Arctic exploration, they will find that making claims to land will diminish this image and find it more profitable to work with other nations that also have a long term interest in the region, such as Canada, Norway and the U.S.
