My neighbor had asthma as a child and started smoking in the seventh grade. By high school he was a heavy smoker spending all of his money on cigarettes. After high school he got a job as a truck driver and moved up to five packs a day. By his late thirties he was getting pretty sick and cut down to over two packs a day of filtered cigarettes. He told me the doctor said filters were better but I didn't believe it. Later he switched to "light" cigarettes and went back to chain smoking
