  • Bên Man Khê còn tung gió bụi mịt mùng, Bên Tiêu Tương còn thương tiếc nơi ngàn trùng.
  • Ok here is the lyric of Hon Vong Phu 1 Chín tầng gươm báu trao tay Nửa đêm truyền hịch định ngày xuất chinh Lệnh vua hành quân trống kêu dồn Quan với quân lên đường, Đoàn ngựa xe cuối cùng, Vừa đi theo lối sông. Phía cách quan sa trường, quan với quân lên đường, hàng cờ theo trống dồn ngoài sườn non cuối thôn, phất phơ ngậm ngùi bay . Qua Thiên San kìa ai tiễn rượu vừa tàn, Vui ca xang rồi đi tiến binh ngoài ngàn. Người đi ngoài vạn lí quang sơn, Người đứng chờ trong bóng đơn. cont.

  • QUÁ HAY ! TUYỆT !

  • in my opinion, Dan Bau instrument is 1 that can carry out the sorrow and sadness

  • great !

  • this story is older than your grandfathers grandfather. the story tell us a story from a wife ,who is waiting with her child for her husband who went to war for his king. she are waiting a very long time until at one time she change into stone.

  • this symphonic version is great .listen to the bass part is heavenly a pleasure !

  • Very nice.

I would like to buy a Dan Bau. There are a few on ebay. Do you know of them? Are there better ones to buy?

    Bryan

    Seattle

  • I bought an electric acoustic dan bau from saigonstrings dot com and they are very helpful. just send an email to saigonstrings@ yahoo dot com and give specs of how u want your dan bau. Hope u buy one bcz they are so fun to play

  • Yes, lassley is right. Although I can go into more detail about that, he/she has the right idea

  • I think the story has incest element to it. But I think it was a powerful element to use in any story to tell of the bitternest of life, that life has force one to do the unspeakable and he/she had no control over it. It also bring into conflict the relationships between husband/wife, brother/sister, mother/child. Perhap that very conflict's purpose to was to make us think and of all three type of loves in one short story. I think the story was brilliant and wise.

  • i agree with you. all tales of folklore are great. if they weren't great, they would not be told to generations after generations. tales of hon vong phu, thi kinh, ba chieu, and the trung sisters are all part of vietnam's long and rich history. so often, in america we only hear of japanese and chinese tales. i'm proud to know that vietnamese culture doesn't lack behind that of our more famous neighbors.

  • what is hon vong phu? the name of the music/story?

  • hon vong phu is a folkloric legendary story of vietnam. it is about a brother and sister separated at youth, then by coincidence meet up later in life and fall in love. after the brother finds out his wife is actually his sister, he leaves without explanation. she waits and waits for him with her child on a mountain and turns into stone.

  • today there is a stone statue in vietnam resembling that of a woman carrying a child. it is known as the "waiting stone" of hon vong phu waiting for her husband to return.

  • brother and sister? but the dude in the beginning of the video says he left to go to war, are you sure they were brother and sister? i tried to look for the story on wikipedia but there isnt a page on it

  • there is info under incest folklore, or just type in hon vong phu and it will take you there. this story was told to me by my mother. and again, i learned about it in a asian studies course i took in college. many have the misconception that it was about a war bride waiting for her husband in combat to return, but in fact the tale is as such.

  • It probably was that initially but it most likely evolved to the war bride. My mother also said it was a war bride. She is 58 years old, and lived through the Viet War and she was young when this song became popular... her mom also said this was popular in the 40's/50's. I did a paper on this essay... I found this song is an allegory for the French occupation. The song does imply it's a war bride.

  • @lassley haha, that is the story line in Cai Luong version. I can't believe there are many Vietnamese still misunderstood these fantastic folk songs. the lyric of Hon Vong Phu 1,2,3 are all written in Vietnamese and there are no such thing sister and brother fall in love. If you can't understand these lyrics, learn more Vietnamese before give a mislead commendation!

  • @GDQT I speak Vietnamese rather well. However, Hon Vong Phu was based on a folkloric tale, which did involve a story having to do with incest. This was never a "cai luong" version. I really don't know what you're talking about. Actually, do you know what you're talking about?

  • @namcasithienphu yes, as you said, HVP is based on folkloric tale. so there are many different adaptations base on it, and Cai Luong is one of them, in Cai Luong version there was a brother and sister fall in love. BUT this song Hon Vong Phu which is composed by Le Thuong and I have written all its lyric. Do you see any words, any sentences say that there was brother and sister fall in love... it is a story that a wife waiting for her husband who went to war until she turns into stone.

  • @GDQT No, of course... you're right! I never did say that your lyrics are about that. However, the folkloric tale is as such. That's all. BTW, thank for having written such beautiful music.

  • hon=stone, vong=waiting, phu=husband. Waiting for husband stone

  • hanquang: Good! Hòn could mean a piece of stone, a rock, or a boulder. In the title of the song, hòn is probably meant to be a boulder jutting to the sea where the woman stood on to wait for her husband's return. Off of the coast of Nha Trang, there's a boulder called "Hòn Chồng" which could mean "Husband Rock", hence the legend.

  • hon= stone, vong=wait, phu= husband-->wait for husband until turn into stone

  • Wow, very pleasant.

  • Is the side of your hand inducing harmonics on the string when you strike it? Or is the pick the only thing that touches the string?

  • The base of the pinky rests on the harmonic node at the exact moment the pick strikes the string, then they come off more or less together.

  • wonderful video :) brought a smile to my face. please continue posting and performing!!!

  • Where I can buy the CD or DVD of your perform?

    Thanx

  • gosh i love the dan bau. I can't wait until my mom goes to vietnam and gets me both the dan tranh and dan bau. do you know where to get lessons in san jose, california?

  • Awesome!! I love it<3 Ilove Dan bau, Dan tranh and flute..awesome...Hope to hear more...you're my hero:) you're fantastic!!

  • Hullex is right, even u r the most important performer or best musician in the world u should respect the conductor a bit. Anyway thanks for uploading such a nice song

  • I have the utmost respect for the conductor--indeed, we're good friends. The original plan was to bring the instrument out, tune, introduce, then play, but he decided that he wanted to fill the space; that decision was out of my hands.

Both your suggestions are noted and appreciated, but I just wanted to clarify the situation.

  • 1- Don't tune your instrument just seconds before perform. It doesnt look professional. 2-Again, dont tune your instrument while the conductor introduce the performance to audiences. You make it sounds like a lousy wedding band. 3- Dont look to the music sheet. You should know the song by heart.

  • 1) I tuned before but as with many orchestra solos, I tuned again to make sure there wasn't slippage. It's less professional to be out of tune.

    2) I had no choice because there was a sax solo before and I couldn't leave my dan bau on stage. Done my way, I would have closed curtains, set up, and re-opened.

    3) This was my 1st time playing dan bau with a string orchestra, so maybe I was paranoid, but I've seen plenty of classical soloists play from music...I also happen to be a violinist.

  • I hardly see your Master look at the music sheet when he performs on Thuy Nga's stage.. maybe because it is usually playback... but anyways.. I agree with Hullex about not looking in the music sheet... and you should show a little passion on your facial expressions, too... the presentation just look better like that... just my two cents. take it or leave it.

  • In an ideal situation, I would have, but I finished composing the final version of the orchestration two days before the concert, so my time was limited. I don't have the luxury of being a professional musician...yet. ;)

  • Beautiful music arrangements...bravo!

  • Wow that was truly touching! 0_o

  • Amazing.. When did they go to Wake? Was it on a Secrest series performance? Please tell me how can I get a CD Please

  • Does anybody happen to have this song? Could you please give me the file? Thanks

  • Do you mean like a sung version?

  • yup that's what I mean.

  • awesome...!!

  • This is very good. I've always wanted to learn how to play Dan Bau.

    Well done to you.

  • Hello, it's me replying. Just wan't to know why the sound of the dan bau you have performed doesn't sound like the other amplified electric dan baus? The others have a long echoing, clear tone, but yours was rather dull. Did you use a pickup and an amplifier...

  • well, there are a number of factors...I tuned to the orchestra, tuning to a C when a lot of musicians will tune to a D.

Most modern dan bau have built in pickups, which I used. I also used a standard setup for the amplifier, high treble and lower bass. One problem might have been the room itself, which tends to dull sounds a bit. I also chose to have the song mostly played in a lower register, whereas using a higher octave would have created a "clearer" tone

  • Whoa! It's one of my favorite song and stories since I was little. I loved this one and Su Tich Trau Cau. Some of my fave Vietnamese folk stories. I have a friend in Montreal, he also knows how to play dan bau. When I was little I always wanted to play dan tranh but we didn't have one and we couldn't afford lessons. Haha...You forgot to bow. btw, you look nice in that white suit.

  • thanks!

who's your friend in Montreal? His teacher might be my teacher as well...

  • could you teach me how to play it through e-mail?

  • I think that would be rather difficult...do you have an instrument already?

  • Thank you so much! Do you have any experience with Vietnamese music otherwise?

  • Beautiful! Keep up the good work... I love the dan bau. I would love to see more of your pieces!

  • I will try to get some more videos online, although the rest will of course be more traditional.

  • What the F*** music is this?!

  • It's called Vietnamese Cultural music, moron. But I guess you wouldn't know since you only have half a brain.

  • I'd prefer that you NOT refer to curious people as morons. You don't spread Vietnamese culture very well being mean.
