  • Great Movie--depicts the flaws in Indian society

  • Powerful Movie must see.

  • I really enjoyed the music especially, good choices. The scene at the Shiv temple by the tree was really awesome, and well the whole end part of the movie. Caught this on IFC today, glad I was channel surfing.

  • Anyone else think she's singing "Be a whore" at 0:22? Guess that's the fourth choice :P

  • I agree that we need to consider the skewed representation of India (and the Third World generally) that pervades Western art and media. Whilst this film's story is an important one to tell, I don't like to think that Westerners take it as "the last word" on India and that they suddenly think of themselves as enlightened experts on the issue.

  • I JUST LOVE THIS MOVIE

  • it was a good movie water very realistic women that's happening to Hindu women in India.

  • This was a beautiful, albeit sad, movie--- worth watching.

  • Screw religion..THIS is why we should become communist

....in soviet russia HUSBAND burns in your funeral pyre...

  • @alikos88

...because that statement makes perfect sense -.-

  • Yes this movie is sad but you can't just watch it. You should find a way to bring attention to these issues and many others. You don't have to donate a bunch of money but you could talk about it. We all watch movies but movies like this are made to change lives.

  • THIs IS MOVIE IS FKN INDIAN BAJA BAJA GEGERGER LOOL HNDEEH HAHAHA

  • Am going drink some water

  • This is a wonderful example of psychological disorder---> cognitive behavioral approach---> cultural bound syndrome. its sad how the minds of the widows are conditioned to behave in a specific manner that they cannot enjoy simple gifts of life like laughter, joy...

  • gud movie.............

  • I was so moved by this portrayal of widows. I was ignorant and upset that, this still goes on in India & especially with young, young widows. Deepa Mehta has done many wonderful works in educating the public of the ancient traditions of Indian women. I am very thankful to her for her courage to promote her films in India. And proud that she makes her home in Ontario, Canada

  • @spandexballet still goes on india? hello, this movie is set in the 1940s! its really smart of you to watch a couple of movies and consider them as the final verdict on what happens in india. I suggest that instead of admiring deepa mehta for educating the public, you should understand that you are NOT an indian, you do not live in india and so you DO NOT know what "goes on" here. so shut your trap, buddy!

  • @eBummed Stop making the same closed minded argument. Go watch The Forgotten Woman. The movie was made in 2008. Why don't you get off of your butt and do something about it otherwise nobody here wants to hear your excuses. It might help you to live with your own pathetic ineffectiveness but people here want to do something. You're proud to be Indian but you won't address the serious issues. In my opinion that isn't something to be proud of... next time just shut YOUR mouth"buddy".

  • @raccoongirl100 can't u read? PUhleez don't ask me to watch a movie. This is your mindset. Why are you calling ME close-minded? The only thing you think you know about India is what you watch in movies. I'm not making excuses, i'm telling you the truth. Yes I'm proud to be indian, because i'm a good one. I'm helping the society, i'm working for my country; why should'nt i be proud? & you sit there, continents away, commenting on a country based on movies u've watched. That's why, ZIP it!

  • @raccoongirl100 - I agree; being proud of serious issues is nothing to be pround of! Pluuuze! How can anybody be proud of the repression of women???????

  • @spandexballet who told u this happens in India.Funny.U must b a retard to think so.India is not a muslim country.

  • LOOOOOVE this movie

  • Very good movie and based off the third part of Deepa Mehta's Elements trilogy. It is set in 1938 and explores the lives of widows at an ashram in Varanasi, India. There are several characters who are child-bride victims in the story. The realization that this is still happening around the world is horrifying and tragic. There is a really good story about "child-brides" in the June 2011 issue of National Geographic and online at ngm.com - I tried posting the link, but it won't take it.

  • What is the music at 0:32 ??

  • @jhonvick2007 Chanchan by A.R. Rahman

  • @jhonvick2007 Chanchan by A.R. Rahman

  • Nice movie.

  • Great movie!!!

  • i met the younger actress this afternoon :)

  • This film is controversial, but it was set in 1938, during the British Raj, so obviously many things have changed since then compared to now. Mehta was making a statement about not just Indian faith and culture, but in fact all societies where conservative faith and society often intertwine with bad results. She is making a statement, a shockingly honest one about the plight of widows, especially ridiculously young ones. If you don't like it don't watch it, but it's a fabulous movie

  • this movie makes Indian film higher stranded<3

  • deepa mehta is so stupid. She makes movies that depict indian culture as being 'old' and the people as being 'poor'. This is no longer the reality of india. This stupid director needs to wake up and make movies that are not portraying a 1000 years old culture

  • @torontobboy21 wow....

  • @torontobboy21 This movie was set in the 1930's, I think you need to wake up and realize what she's trying to portray. This is one story and it does not represent the whole of India.

  • @torontobboy And that totally went over your head that there is a scene with Gandhi in it too. If they are so stupid then why was it and Oscar-nominated Film. IMO She is bringing up issues that resonate with many cultures regardless of faiths and traditions. One of the main themes here is that people who have power will use it, however in what way who knows. IN this film in particular it highlights how this power subjected women to a life of solidtude due to people not wanting to deal with them

  • @torontobboy21 Watching the full film and realize the undertones that are beside what is just being shown on the screen. There are always themes that are subtle.

  • I'm a man, and I curled up in pain and hatred for this movie, because it showed me the lowest of the low in women. It just made me sick. Especially what the main character did to herself.

  • @BrandonNielsen87 I actually enjoyed this film due to the fact that just because it's based in religion doesn't always mean it will come out like that.

  • Lisa Ray, I wish you well and strength. <3 I still wanna see you doing movies like I Can't Think Straight. :)

  • and the song from 1:24 - the end

  • anyone know the name of the song from 1:04 - 1:15 please tell me (:

  • just watched this movie a day ago and its so sad i almost cried -its a good movie tho

  • Like !

  • sencillamente hecha con la humildad y no con la tecnologia de hollywood y son mil veces mejores !!!1 deberian ser mil veces premiadas!!!!

  • I pray for actress Lisa Ray to get normal cured from cancer.May god heal her from pains.I loved her acting Even in this movie water. It is 100% real the way women are ill treated in India in Hinduism. I faced gender discrimination personally they are all male biased. We must protect girl child........................................... and even widow women rights................

  • Oh this is sad.

  • God I hated this movie had to watch it in class now i gota do a bullshit project on it, fuck canada and its multicultural horseshit academics!

  • @cptspears1691 Multicultural horseshit? Wow, you really seem like an ignorant fuck.

  • @NoLiesJustLove27 hey i dont care what the hell people do, but when it starts affecting me then i start to get pissed, so yes!, it is, horseshit!

  • @NoLiesJustLove27 and another note, you are ignorant, believeing that every one can live together in perfect harmony, but ile tell you what, that shit dont happen, its time to clue into reality bud. its called ideology, and no matter how hard you wave your little peace flag, theres always gona be some one rdy to kill for theirs.

  • @cptspears1691 Haha whooahh there turbo. Just because I don't have the energy to hate like you doesn't mean I'm some peace loving hippie. I never once said that I wanted people to live in "harmony," because I know that's not realistic. However, I think that people who don't want to learn about world issues are just ignorant pieces of shit (like you). I happen to make a difference in this world, as opposed to just sitting on my fat, lazy, ass and staying secluded in my own little stupid world.

  • @NoLiesJustLove27 I agree with you.

  • @cptspears1691 HA she even stated that she wasn't a "people live in Harmony" get your facts straight, man.

  • @cptspears1691 how DARE you say that ?!?!?!?

mulicultruism is what makes canada such a beautiful country, if you can't accept different cultures it just shows how close minded you truly are!!!

  • @cptspears1691 I happen to love watching foreign language films and I wish our school gives us more homework and projects like yours. I really understand what you felt. I also say things I don't mean to say when I get pissed off because of school works.

  • Beautiful movie! Does anyone know the song being played?

  • this was an amazing film -the acting was beautiful, the story poignant and the music and cinematography perfect

  • I'll never forget this film. It's incredible. Thanks

  • Lovely

  • does anyone know if the soundtrack is on youtube? i really love the music :D

  • such a beautiful movie.. the lil girl is jus brilliant!

  • I alreday saw this mvie in my Asian American Lierature Class & I gotta say that this is a very great & interesting story.

  • the ending was horrible. I'm deeply disturbed. but very good movie

  • @sydneybeach95 i have not seen the whole movie, but i wish to know the ending..tnx

  • @leophilippines the end well..after kalyani marries the guy, she realizes his dad used her as a prostitute...and she drowns herself out of grief. Chuyia is then sent as a prostitute, and shakuntala tries to save her but she was too late..then later they recieve news that mahadma ghandi arrived at the train station, and as they arrived the train started to leave, so shakuntala starts runnign beside the train askin if anyone would take chuyia with them. Narayan is in the train, and he takes her...

  • @sydneybeach95 As a person who comes from a "third world" country where a lot of things were going awry, the ending was very symbolic and emotional. Because the woman knows that while she can not go, she also realizes that Chuyia cannot stay here and be brought back into the destructive cycle that one of the characters killed herself from. So this is the only option that she has left to allow Chuyia to be able to break this cycle of perversion. But that's just my interpretation.

  • This movie is great! Very sad, but still beautiful!

  • i love john abraham who wlse does??

  • I have GOT to see this. I love the set D.M has. Earth so far was the best.

  • This film moved me deeply. It is a beautiful film, heart breaking but healing for those who have been heartbroken.

  • How old was the child at the beginning that was married. In the USA people go to jail for that kind of thing.

  • She's eight.

But this in in the 1930's-40's in a rural part of India. You probably wouldn't see this kind of thing happening there today.

Deepa Mehta kind of just makes her so young so she can make her point about the dangers of using religion incorrectly.

  • although she was married as a child she never met her husband

  • @LifeIsTooEasy in usa ppl are glorified for cmmitting war crimes

  • is amazin this film!

    is...is... i can't explain whit words...

is cruel, but is the truh...

  • I kinda don't respect modern india cinema. BUT this movie one those exceptional with shatter every doubt on indian cinema potential!!

  • this is actually a Canadian Film

  • I partially agree with you. But is Hollywood any better? Tell me how many movies released in Hollywood in a year are truly original, meaningful and not annoying.....I can count them on one hand, not more!

  • heyyy !

can someonee pleasee tell me the name of the FIRST songg played on this trailer?

the one with the beautiful girl voicee?

    pleaseeeeeee !

  • I watched it once on the Canadian channels at 3am in the morning. Being from Japan, I should have no interest in this film whatsoever.

    But it totally moved me.

Is anyone in favour of posting the actual movie up?

  • I understand you Chirushah, and agree. But such a movie is still important to remind us how lucky we are all today not to see such things again (well, there may be Satis in several places in India, and they should be prohibited), and that we should thank great people like Mahatma Gandhi etc who liberated women and widows in India; and Deepa Mehta etc who made the movie despite all threats and protests. A really great movie.

  • I want to know the name of the song playing in the trailer so bad. Ever since i first saw it about 2 years ago I've been trying to find it.

I'm finally going to get to see it when Netflix mails it to me. I'm excited!

  • the song played is called Chanchan and it's the fourth song on the soundtrack.

    great song, wonderful movie.

  • best film i've seen in a while now

  • Deepa Mehta is without doubt one of the best indian directors, and one of the finest directors in the world, loved all of her movies. Its great to see such a beautiful intelligent film!

  • This is an awesome film!! Sarala was awesome!!!

  • sarala is a from our country...SRI LANKA

  • thank you for saying that. this is a wonderful film, but i've found that american viewers often take the film out of context and think that this is a HUGE issue across India.

  • harika

  • Amazingly beautiful, and so heartrending at the same time...

  • i love this movie and yes i agree that this should have won an award and that pan's laby labyrinth isnt good and i wouldnt watch pan's labyrinth again. i wish that the guy would have came to take the girl right away after he spoke with his father so that she didnt die. i really wanted a happier ending. i'm glad this movie was made. i had no idea that women could be treated this way. i'm more thankful for my life.

  • What category was Water nominated for?

  • Best Foreign Language Film. it lost to the Lives of Others. the other nominees were After the Wedding, Days of Glory and Pan's Labyrinth. I wanted Water to win and I HATE Pan's Labyrinth, but that's just my opinion.

  • Great movie, absolutely heartbreaking

  • Why women widows are rejected by indian society while men losing their wifes continue to live normally ? Such unfairness to women ..An emotinal film which depicts about indian drawbacks..

  • Amazing movie.

  • i agree with circus, it's one of the best films i've ever seen.

  • awesome, more such come. world and even Indians should see the darker side of women abuse

  • what do you mean by "women abuse". This film tackles the social degration of widows, not domestic violence. Please get your facts right.

  • Abuse to women can be acted out in many ways. This is one of them depicted in this movie

  • Social degration of widows is a totally different ballpark from domestic violence. Social degration of widows is woven into the way of life/ religion that is Hinduism and is advocated by it, whereas very few societies support Domestic Violence.

  • dontt blame hiduisim, its the culture that opresses women not the religion!

  • And initially, as for the comment "even Indians should see the darker side of women abuse" - who do you think this film was intended for? It was written in Hindi for a reason ...

  • Actually, the abuse of women doesn't only pertain to physical abuse, but also mental abuse, so yes, this does show as you say "women abuse". And it's DEGRADATION not degration. This treatment of widows isn't only because of religion, but culture. A lot of Asian countries had this treatment of their widows. And domestic violence is still a huge, major problem in India, so it's not as if people are doing anything about it (maybe NOW they are).

  • This is an unforgettable movie that every human being should see.

  • One of the best films out there.
