Chepito is a great musician but didn't carry the band. It was a combo of ALL the musicians. All the ingrediants make the dish great, not just one. Best version of Santana: Carlos, Greg Rollie, Neal Schon, Dave Brown, Michael Shrieve, Michael Carabello AND Jose "Chepito" Areas. Would luv to hear that 70s Latin Rock again! Dave Brown (RIP).
Carlos was very good, but Chepito gave the band the sound that made the hits. You never saw a Greatest Hits Volume 2 have you?? After Chepito was gone, it was just another pop band with a few hits that had no originality to them.
I heard this guy in SF from Santana old days.....never liked Santana (average guitar player).....but this Chepito guy..... incredible percussion and superb musical timing.....listen how he carries the melody...not only perc.... it'a musical genre on it's own....latin rock maybe?....
