  • brace Sie sich selbst für das Mondlicht

  • This song is both artistically interesting, technically well done and sublime to listen to. The placement of the two voices during the verses is just perfect, and both are perfectly on time with the driving guitar and percussion. The interludes have a disturbing quality quite appropriate to the subject matter. I'm just discovering The Velvet Underground, and this song is one of my favourite so far.

  • the velvet underground are like a sure way to trip out!

  • 9:01 yet? found myself still waitin for the part that sounds like this:

WAKE UP!!!... MAKE UP!!!.. SHAKE UP!!!... =(

  • this is very hypnotic and original. I love it.

  • omg. That's so strange. But not strange for a VU song.

  • 11 fucking bitches.

  • Classic, reminds me of dorm room girls and giving thanks to Jah.

  • EEE MUY BUENO CHICO!!

  • THE CRADLLE OF PUNK ERA !!!

  • @3144541

IMO they never retained that pre-punk sound after Sir John of Cale left. Just listen again to 'I'm Waiting for the Man', 'Run Run Run' & 'White light/White Heat'. Nothing from '76 onwards was more "punk" in its stripped down sound.

  • lyrics ?

  • error try again

  • the left-right trick isn't working? i swear last time i clicked this vid it was working. someone reply if it's supposed to be like this

  • The vocals sound much more clear and sharp then I've ever heard them before. Is it the vinyl recording? This is one of my favorite VU tracks, this is the only other time I've heard it other then playing it myself. I need to hang out with cooler people ha ha.

  • eternal and time absorbing, incomprehensibly gentle clash of sensibilities, the sick and the dumb, inverse reverse perverse, sea is full of fishes, too hard to get on to for a non native English speaker, is there anyone who knows where to obtain lyrics?

  • @acnikon Just Google them(:

  • It's a shame this song doesn't get more recognition in VU circles. It's arguably the most experimental track they ever did, even moreso than Heroin, European Son or Sister Ray.

  • I haven't heard this in so long.

    I needed to change that.

  • this song is magical

  • maksymalnie odjechane, ale trąci myszką :-|

  • this track is total Genius , and im not surprised people dont get it ..... look at the music that people listen to today - its not shock to me really :/

  • made me realize one of my speakers is out

  • thumbs up to people who enjoy commenting positively. I don't understand why anyone is listening to music they don't enjoy.

  • Perhaps this isn't entertainment for many people. It is, however, art in its own right.

  • everything makes sense

  • @hitman1131 Its 2 people doing a monolgue. Followed by one of the singers and a female singer. The song also has good pianist. Its more then your little brain can understand no band that you adore could ever muster up enough brain power to make something this experimental and musically genious.

  • @BRITISHANARCHIST Oh, I presume you don't understand it :P

  • @BRITISHANARCHIST Okay, so i have taken your opinion in to consideration (obviously, as i am replying to your comment) and i am very curious as to why you think it sucks

  • First 25 seconds... "System of a Down"?. I bet it does.

  • @HaMM3rMJ The opening of "Chop Suey!" is very similar to this

  • are they talking backwards in the chorus?

  • @Yolticat No...

  • Comment removed

  • I love it <3

  • woah

  • Trippy

  • this is horrible.

  • your horrible for saying that

  • @Hitman1131 Nope...

  • @Fozzy757 Two monotone, incomprehensible voices over guitar followed by two bad singers doesn't make good music.

  • @Hitman1131 "good music" is described differently by any individual. Just because it's not what you may normally hear does not make it good or bad music. If you don't like it, go away, and support the bands you DO like.

  • @Hitman1131 well, why not,?

  • In bilico tra genialità e follia. Magnifica.

  • Genius, wish I knew what the hell Sterling Morrison was saying though >.<

  • The Velvet are the real GOD!

  • so crazy..

  • Sounds ALOT like Call Me Back on The Strokes new album Angles. check it out for free on the strokes.com!

  • @Message167 No, Call me back-The Strokes sounds "ALOT" like Murder Mystery on the Velvet Underground old album.

  • Really good.

  • Classic stuff, yo

  • Why have I never heard this before?

    It's beautiful!

  • genius and i think i red this song was never dun livebcuz of the difficult timing

  • genius

  • I can't believe people are knocking Maureen's vocals in this song...I think they're lovely. I love how she sounds like a 12-year-old boy.

BTW, did the Velvets ever attempt to do this song live?

  • marvellous.....marvellous.....MARVELLOUS!

  • That's Maureen Tucker who's singing. Not Nico.

  • Nico Sucks!

Without Nico this is a great song. I can see why the Velvet Undergound did not want Nico in the group.

  • @Infinity9878 You suck, she made that first album just as much as the rest of the Velvet Underground

  • Nico Sucks!

  • I find this track oddly compulsive. One can call, it weird, call it nasty, call it pretentious.

But somehow I think it is great art.

    Could be wrong.

    Don't think so.

    David B

  • i think the girl ruins the song the lead male singer should have stayed solo

  • New favourite the Velvet Underground song.

  • How stirring and moving and original and so on is this.......Inspirational......makes me jealous that I hadnt wrote it.

  • Could you please please upload That's the story of my life? I can't find it anywhere, only covers...

  • freaking amazing

  • so underrated.

  • wow that was pretentious.

  • @silverface125 INDEED

  • Inverse and adverse and converse to perverse.....

  • @SubliminalWars Yeah. Maureen does not have have much of a voice. on the other hand, Nico was awesome

  • @SubliminalWars Maureen Tucker does the female vocals on this one. Nico had already left to pursue a solo career

  • horrible

  • mo tucker sounds fucking ridiculous here.

  • I was listening to this, for the first time, while drifting asleep last night. Fucking ridiculous, hahahaha!

  • @mastashaker916

I'm doing that right now, haha.

  • Thank God for the L-R switch on your stereo, eh?

  • The Velvet Underground are criminally unrated, Lou Reed is a Genious!!!!

  • @pluckdaduck No way in hell they are underrated, they are lavished with praise across the musical landscape, they are recognized as one of the most important and integral bands in the evolution of music. They are usually credited as one of the pioneers of Noise Rock, Punk Rock, Drone, Krautrock and just about every experimental offshoot. Yeah the guy in the LRG shirt that sits next to you in class may not be familiar with The Velvet Underground but that doesnt mean they are underrated.

  • objections suffice apelike and tactile bassoon oboeing me cordon the virus' section off to the left is what is not right

  • no words...

  • I do not know why Nico is pictured here.

  • magnifica joya de la musica ...

  • Fucking M A S T E R P I E C E !

  • I fucking love them<3

  • HEY GUYS LETS DRINK PBR AND TALK ABOUT HOW COOL WE ARE AND HOW WE WANT TO BE PHOTOGROPHERS.. you faggot hipsters

  • @BowToMySkill

    PHOTOGROPHERS lol

  • @BowToMySkill Velvet Undergroud are awesome. You have no please here. LEAVE, LEAVE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE FOR THOU!

  • i'm kind of new to the velvet underground so like do you listen to each speaker by itself or does the song make more sense when combined?

  • @thedoorsforever256 Its absolutely fantastic combined! You can listen once through each speaker if you wanne understand the lyrics, but its meant to listen to it combined

  • @mangakyuubi haha sweet so i get it then! =P i really like heroin, who loves the sun and jesus

  • @thedoorsforever256 @thedoorsforever256 Ah yes, i also like heroin, who loves the sun and jesus, venus in furs is also one of my favorites and.. I could go on forever, yet I have much to discover :p

  • @thedoorsforever256

Just listen to whatever you feel like.

  • razamataz

  • Dichotic listening. These guys ust have been reading up about psychoogy at the time. Great track

  • Its worth listening in stereo several times: with only left track on, then with only right track on, then with both tracks again.

  • Connected to "The Gift "somehow.

  • Brilliant. Y'all need to have the headphones on.

  • AGH i'm glad i found this band.

  • William Burroughs --> This --> Interzone by Joy Division

  • Thanks for posting this! You are awesome!

  • Is it just me, or LSD

  • @renzolikescheez :D

This melody has a '60s feel to it. >:)

  • ART !!!

  • Heard that late night in a party like 18 years ago, never totally left my head since that. Lost the CD years ago. Nice to hear that again. Reminds me the girl i was in love with back then.

  • I can't believe am hearing this... niceeee!!!!

  • this is great while frying balls

  • @connorisajew I'm baked beans on fried toast right now and this stuff owns my brains.

  • absolutly fucking briliiant

  • No doom or gloom allowed in this room.

  • trippy.

  • shaving my head made ME balder too!!

  • @OneStarRatingLTD Haha, I love this comment.

  • Help me out please , when I read the lyrics there's supposed to be a left and a right voice but here I only hear the right voice O_0

  • @Raandomnesss one of your speakers are broken

  • classic

  • this song is quite weird, interesting, yet good.

  • This song is PURE EVIL!..... men! i listened it alone at 3 am in my dark room... and it was really something else.... obviously i didnt sleep that night.... AMAZING!, VELVET RULES!!

  • Chop Suey is pretty similar, but....definitely not a rip-off. Definitely distinct enough.

  • @russelgman um no... this song been here for about 40 years dude

  • @snipazcamper2 And?

  • @russelgman its better than chop suey

  • @snipazcamper2 Okay? And when exactly did i say that it wasn't? Work with me here.

  • @russelgman its better than chop suey, meaning Keep System of a down out of this video, they are a great band but this has nothing in comparison.

  • @snipazcamper2 Ugh. Look at the other comments, everybody is comparing system of a down to this. I decided to put my two cents in. During that, i simply stated that the two songs were distinct enough from each other. At NO point did i claim that System of a Down's Chop Suey is better than Velvet Underground's Murder Mystery. I was merely stating that the two songs are not similar enough to compare.

Take your time and read the entire context before freaking out.

  • That perverted nursery ryhme at the end, is the sound of the song going insane, terrifying, wonderful, sinister, psychotic, and ultimately mind-blowing. There will never be another band like The Velvet Underground.

  • Omg i had some dank ass weed and smoked while listening to this song.... so fucking tripping!!

  • VU is just absolutely amazing, Lou has such an incredible writing capability, man what i would give to see them in the glory years.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG.

  • System of the Down ripped them off!!!!! Im ssooo pissed!! But I love this song from them. I love the music and poems in it i (wonder what their saying) LOL

So diffrent, Odd, poetic, and non- comformous

    Everything good art is.

My favorite part is Where the two men are reading poetry

ones real fast and sayin the complete oppisite and the other man is real slow

It also sounds like an older man and a little kid singing together awsome!!

  • @RevoSociety I noticed the same thing (about System Of A Down)

  • I feel asleep stoned listening to this album then woke up sort of freaked out during the end section. I love this song.

  • @HamSandwich09 I've been there man

  • relent and obverse and inverse and perverse and reverse the inverse of perverse and reverse and reverse an reverse and reverse and reverse and chop it and pluck it and cut it and spit it and sew it to joy on the edge of a cyclop and spinet it to rage on the edge of a cylindrical minute.

  • Lou Reed & Doug Yule ;

Sterling Morrison & Maureen "Moe" Tucker ; all 4 members alternated lyrics -- simultaneously -- for this AWESOME song from 1969 .

Reed's amphetamine ramblings , preceding 1975's Metal Machine Music .

  • whos talking at the beginning? lou reed and .........?

  • Lou and Sterling, then Moe and Doug.

  • I absolutely love this song..I listen to it all day..I especially like the ending with the piano playing.. Lou reed is a genius. The v elvet underground is badass. Fuck all the people who were closed minded in the 60's..fucking conformists. I am a flower child and I won't conform!

  • lou reed??

  • Just started listening to them. Beautiful album.

  • the stereo sound of this song really surprised me

  • sounds like the whopo

  • the freakiest song i have ever heard.

everytime i hear it i see the scooby doo gang crashing a party at the factory and lou reed just yelling "jesus christ what took you so long!"

  • Other way around smart guy.

  • how can they rip someone off from the future?

  • He's trapped in his SOAD little vortex....

  • u r an ignorant....

  • @seniorxduck hey man, have you ever listened to music before? i heard it even existed in the 60s ZOMG. inorite?

  • its a shame how ignorant some people are musically

ah this comment really put me in a bad mood

  • which song is it suppose to sound like?

  • The beginning has a similar sound to Chop Suey!, but they aren't similar at all really. seniorxduck's a silly boy.

Also, I didn't mean to downrate your comment Slopies, I missed the 'reply' button.

  • That was thew first thing i thought of when I first heard it too!

  • Isn't it sweet, being unique.

  • this song totally freaks me out, especially on vinyl since its so long and alternates between happy and scaryish......

  • how is the vinyl version different than this ??

  • It's deeper sound thats all around you. son

  • This reminds me of a Pavement song, the one where they shout I'm tryin, I'm tryin, I'm tryin...

  • @dnggitg Conduitforsale! : D

    PAVEMENT YES

  • Absolutely epic! As revolutionary as Sister Ray or Heroin or any of VU's other classics but one that recieves so little mention...maybe due to its complexity and originality but it deserves mention alongside the greatest songs of the era

  • @KarolusMagnus I agree but some people are to stupid to enjoy music with this many layers

  • i always imagined it to be two investigators looking over a crime scene.maybe im totally wrong, but the first of it seems like a sherlock homes investigation.lol

  • best song on the album imo. I'm a lesser fan of Lou Reeds victory

  • Wow. I just looked up the lyrics for this song and, finally I have found One song I like with my name in the lyrics!!! The search is over!!!

"Excuse to WILLOW and wander dark wonders divest me of robes-sutures Harry"

    Awesome. Thanks VU.

  • thats a bad ass name.

  • what a joker)

  • Yeah, It's really my name. I have a friend named Sarah who always rubs it in my face that there are so many awesome songs with her name in them. But now I win :D

  • has she not heard of potter?

  • Comment removed

  • Both the reccord cover and the note up here saying it's Nico sings this is wrong!

This is from the 3rd LP, the one that came after White Light, White Heat. (Also known as The Black Album)

The singer is Maureen Tucker, and she also played drums in V.U.

  • That isn't Nico...

  • maybe mo tucker?
