@rodentcafeteria It looks like he's using some type of Auto-Wah. They sweep the frequency depending on how you set them and give that customary Wah sound. Its basically a pedal with on/off and E.Q. settings. guitanorak
Sorry for the people who cant see who Uli Jon Roth is.. most nowadays guitar legend was influences by him. At least knw how good he is. And Uli dont make record for the top 40's! But If someone dont like it, just go to hell!
@DoubleIntruder This is one of the better Red House covers (vocals aside). He plays it the way it SHOULD be played. Not like Malmsteen who thinks that everything should be played in triplets and at full speed.
I'm 21 and even I know whats up with ULRICH ROTH. Tokyo Tapes? some of the best playing there is! Earthquake? Not a shred of Hendrix influence. He is a ForeFather.
@DoubleIntruder Don't forget Marty Friedman. Sky Overture almost sounds like Friedman could have wrote it, he takes so much technique and phrasing from Uli.
Uli Jon Roth shouldn't have insisted on singing. He wasn't that bad of a guitarist -- especially by the 70s standards, but he couldn't sing to save his life.
he did change his guitar and if you are calling uli jon roth an amateur obviously you dont no who he is so shut the fuck hollandziek your a stupid ignorant peice of shit
thats the same as saying that jimmy page, hendrix, paul gilbert, bb king or even NOEL gallagher suck... they're all friggin godly in what they do. I'd like to see you even play on stage in front of at least 500 people and not screw up. newb

He's anything BUT a Hendrix wanna-be. 99% of his playing is totally different from Hendrix. Very classically oriented with a blues influence. Check out his videos.
May be as most guitarists from that era were influenced by Hendrix but The stuff I hear him do is classical with a Blues inflection. Hendrix did nothing like Classical music.
that's why the most respected guitarists (especially blues)have or do pay tribute to him in almost every interview, just because you're too stupid or tone deaf to understand the genius of hendrix isn't a reason to say he's overrated sorry
How come some people always resort to insults & rude comments if someone disagrees with them? Your bad manners say nothing about me & everything about you, pal. For your information I've been playing the acoustic guitar since I was 6 & the electric since I was 13. I DO know something about music despite your unpleasant remarks. I can assure you, Hendrix isn't the guitar God that everyone makes him out to be.
alright fine, let's have an intelligent discussion on how he's supposedly overrated, or better yet in your own words "most overrated guitarist ever", can you even give a single legitimate reason for this absurdly stupid comment which btw speaks volumes about your supposed guitar playing
How would you like to measure the best guitarist? If you want speed Satriani & Malmsteen blow Hendrix into the weeds. Technique? EVERY top modern guitarist has a better technique than Henrix. Hendrix was an incredibly sloppy picker (distortion masked a lot of this). Van Halen introduced tapping & harmonics to rock music. Hendrix just took old blues licks & pumped them up
what about being one of the first to experiment with stereophonic and phasing effects during recording or using the studio as an extension of his idea's, or what about being able to hit specific voicings because his hands were capable of fretting notes with his thumb up to 6 frets below the shape he was hitting leaving his fingers free to play a lead over it, and btw i'm still waiting for a reason he's overrated; malmsteen being able to play faster etc aren't REASONS you moron. sorry
You're taking his playing out of context. Back in the 60's his playing was radical and very advanced. Since we all build on our predecessors modern playing has advanced way beyond him, but back then it was special compared all most all of the other stuff that was being heard. He changed the way a Rock guitar was played.
I agree. That's what I'm saying. Hendrix was amazing in his day but it's 30 years since he was playing. Things have moved on. He's like a classic car. Think of him as a Lamborghini Muura. Astonishing in its day but a modern Lamborghini will do everything better & faster
"This guy is trying his hardest to BE Hendrix...to the facial twitches when he is playing"
Uh, excuse me, troll...if you've ever watched the original blues masters, e.g. Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, etc., one can easily see Hendrix' "facial twitches" aren't totally 'original.'
In parting, I say to you and ALL other music 'critics' who've infested YouTube, 99.99% of which have never, ever, ever, even performed onstage:
My can can sing better, but he can't quite hold the guitar yet...and he definitly didn't like me tying a scarf around his head...still working on it...will post more later...

but it would definitely be a challenge for ANY guitarist to sound/play cool with such a TOTALLY emotionless rhythm section. is this their first attempt at playing blues?!
Actually, Uli hit some nice sweet spots in there. I think the band is just not a real blues band. Blues is American music and I think Europeans tend to have a slightly different feel - not a bad thing, just not as bluesy.
Mmmmm.... Peter Green, John Mayall, Clapton, Moore and I can go on a litlle longer. It´s just not his style. I don´t think feeling has anything to do with where you´re coming from.
True, but ask any guitarist/uli fan ,the majority will all say the strats better tone wise, the guitar was never meant to be played in the violins register ,there even scientific reasons as well(sting vibration scale length and all that jazz
I don't know wtf some of you people are talking about. His guitar is not out of tune...and Uli started off playing blues and Hendrix covers. He's a great blues player, though this vid isn't very special (probably because he was playing with a broken string during most of it.)
the sky guitar tone suks period vs a strat, the guitar is NOT made to be played in the range of a violin, there are MANY variables why, there are NO sweet spots that high for one.
The Sky Guitar doesn't suck! Uli has John Oram designed pickups that bring out the higher registers. Uli's tone on Prelude to the Symphonic Legends is magnificent. But Strats are definitely better for blues.
I love Ulrich Roth (his work on the early Scorpions stuff is groundbreaking)...but his stab at Hendrix's classic blues tune was a big letdown. Roth just can't play (or sing) blues. Interesting footage, nevertheless.
I bet every time uli and the boys played that funky segue into red house, panties would have been flying off the young ladies all over Europe in the 70s! Awesome

He was playing technically demanding classically influenced guitar years before Van Halen, Rhoads or Malmsteen appeared on the scene.

I don´t think feeling has anything to do with where you´re coming from.

out of tune, broken string, missed chord, just remember man once is a mistake, twice is jazz baby

He's a great blues player, though this vid isn't very special (probably because he was playing with a broken string during most of it.)

amazing that he doesn't stop and tune that strat.

What´s up?
It´s just a guitar monster...

the sky guitar tone suks period vs a strat, the guitar is NOT made to be played in the range of a violin, there are MANY variables why, there are NO sweet spots that high for one.

His tone on Beyond the Astral Skies is great though...

Uli at his peak,I hope he drops that silly skyguitar and pick up his strat again!
05rsx 5 years ago
He doesn't need to drop the Sky guitar; he just needs to use it for Sky guitar tunes and use the Strat for Strat tunes.
