He was playing technically demanding classically influenced guitar years before Van Halen, Rhoads or Malmsteen appeared on the scene.

How would you like to measure the best guitarist? If you want speed Satriani & Malmsteen blow Hendrix into the weeds. Technique? EVERY top modern guitarist has a better technique than Henrix. Hendrix was an incredibly sloppy picker (distortion masked a lot of this). Van Halen introduced tapping & harmonics to rock music. Hendrix just took old blues licks & pumped them up

Since we all build on our predecessors modern playing has advanced way beyond him, but back then it was special compared all most all of the other stuff that was being heard. Actually, Uli hit some nice sweet spots in there. I think the band is just not a real blues band. Blues is American music and I think Europeans tend to have a slightly different feel - not a bad thing, just not as bluesy.
