We Poles have been screwed around for many years now by the recent presidents of the US who promise things like free tourist visas for 60 days everytime they need something (like support in Iraq, where Polish army actually was in charge of one of the districts). As to why some Poles/Czechs didnt want this America has a lot of enemies, building American weapons on your soil means you have all the same enemies. Poles/Czechs feared that this system could make them a target for a terrorist attack or worse if war broke out. Made up example: howd you feel if France built a missile silo just a few miles from your house and Frances enemies lived just a few hundreds miles away from you. As the sole European here, I can attempt to explain this: Europe is tired of war (cold or otherwise). The govts of Poland and Czeck Rep wanted the missiles because Americans means jobs and money. But the people did not because missiles means military and taking sides. Most of Europe is not under any sort of military threat (even from Russia) and is quite stable so they don't want to do anything to jeopardize that. This is what is going on.

As to why some Poles/Czechs didnt want this America has a lot of enemies, building American weapons on your soil means you have all the same enemies. Poles/Czechs feared that this system could make them a target for a terrorist attack or worse if war broke out. Made up example: howd you feel if France built a missile silo just a few miles from your house and Frances enemies lived just a few hundreds miles away from you. As the sole European here, I can attempt to explain this: Europe is tired of war (cold or otherwise). The govts of Poland and Czeck Rep wanted the missiles because Americans means jobs and money. But the people did not because missiles means military and taking sides. Most of Europe is not under any sort of military threat (even from Russia) and is quite stable so they don't want to do anything to jeopardize that. This is what is going on.

Capone, I do not trust the Russian leadership of Vladimir Putin. The Russian army still occupies the Georgian territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. They've also tried to make mischief in the Russian-speaking areas of Ukraine. I put nothing past Putin.
Putin said that the biggest mistake the former USSR made was in letting go of the former republics, which includes Georgia and Ukraine. I think he wishes to return to the old days when Russia called the shots there.

I read (present tense) the bible, the qur'an, the surat even the Bhagavad Ghita, which is how I come to my conclusions. You don't seem to be very bright, let alone book-read. which is why I don't give what you say any thought or credence. Does that make sense?

Jesus is God. I believe 100% in His teachings. I am a sinner and struggle every second of every minute to follow His teachings, but come far too short. There are far better people than me who are examples of the virtues of my faith. But I am trying. And people like you don't make it easy.

Capone, I hope you're right but fear you're not. Russia is becoming more and more aggressive vis-a-vis the former republics and E. Europe. Has Europe forced Russia to return South Ossetia and Abkhazia back to the Georgians? No. If a similar situation occurs, they'll do the same thing. They're too dependent now on energy (such as natural gas) supplied by the Russians to raise much of a stink about anything.

Well, like I said, Georgia's govt is not a model for human rights and EU values, which is why the EU has pretty much been staying out of that cat-fight. If they were to reform, it would make supporting them a lot easier.

Capone, perhaps Georgia is not a model of democracy, but that does not negate the fact that it is a sovereign country that was invaded by another. Europe should have demanded that the Russians leave -- they just wrung their hands and said a few 'tsk tsks.' If the EU won't intervene for Georgia, they won't intervene for anyone else in Eastern Europe.

Georgia isn't part of the EU. I'm assuming by eastern european countries you mean member states. In that case I would absolutely disagree. The EU would not let any member state be invaded.

Hello but bush said that the missile sheild was not directed against russia? was bush lying? The reason is that the sheild could affect the russian nuclear forces.The sheild would not affect russia at all if they wanted to invade poland after all they will not do it with nukes but ground forces. Poland and Czechs are in nato and protected are they not? so get real with this missile sheild rubbish. be glade you money is not wasted on another defence project white elephant.

1/2 This is why I find 'anti-American' sentiment in Western nations mystifying. The U.S.A. holds everything together... the sea routes, the air space...the 'warning' too rouge nations 'to watch it'. Yes, I do absolutely, Indonesia is a would be threat... it's just simple maths of population ratio and the fact they are Muslim and the fact Australia has rich pickings. Well, things in Britain at the moment are like oooh what the naughty Muslim going to do..but its against a backdrop of polite peace time and understanding, lets just get on with our lives and make money... but if the shit hits the fan and if they really wanted to make a bitch fight... they would last about five minutes.

Yes, I know Indonesia is the most populated Mohammedan country in the world. But the real math is this; any western army against Mohammedans of any nation are like 10 to 1. Look at Israel and the Arab wars, or ANY war with Mohammedans involved in recent history. I wouldn't worry about Australia. I WOULD worry about the Mohammedans in Europe. The immigration policies of the UK and France aren't doing the rest of us any favours.
