LOTR is the most epic fantasy movie series with tons of great action and battle scenes. But it's the small, intimate moments like this that make it truly great.
You can almost re-play this conversation to a working class house in Damascus............ "I wish this wasn't happening dad. Dad - So do all that live to see such times but that is NOT for them to decide".
Nice words, but not wholeheartedly soothing in some situations.
we can all make a difference in this time.... sometimes we don't want to live in this time , but remember God gave us this time... and God picked us for this time because he has a good plane for you even if you can't see it !!!
Sir Ian McKellan......... an absolute MASTER. He turns a simple scene into a work of art. I've never been one for the whole "thespian, lovie-darling" thing but there is something special about the likes of Ian McKellan when they do a scene. Just like Oliver Reed and Derek Jacobi in Gladiator........... they just OOOOZE class. So to did Richard Harris of course,
i reread the book b4 the movies came out. this speech changed my life. 4 15 yrs a carried hatred towards the man that killed my sister. she was my best friend. i wanted to make him feel agony beyond comprehension. courts were 2 good for him she was 10(nothing weird just shot her) while i had heard this message b4 nothing gave me peace til i read this. it was destroying my life and Tolkien saved me. it was like a switch the moment i read it i forgave him and could move on.
@horizen12 - Someone once said that the "LOTR" trilogy was better than the 'Holy Bible' of the Christians, it certainly has less pornography! I found your comment to be one of the finest I've ever read, thank you ... I think we should all be 'forgiving'. I once remarked that Jesus, before he died, said that he is giving his life so that others would not feel 'Guilt' and be forgiven... then the Church turned this around and made everyone feel guilt even more than before.
@rictheis I understand where you get feelings like this, but as a Catholic, I feel like I should point out that Tolkien was Catholic too. Gandalf's speech is Catholicism at its best. From outside the church it might seem like a judgmental, guilt causing organization, but within we have the sacrament of reconciliation. where you get your sins completely and totally forgiven, no matter what they are. The church sticks to calling sins sins, but guilt can be washed away in reconciliation.
the extended versions of the movies are so much better... They explain things more than in the origional movies, like Gandalf explaining to Frodo about Gollom origionally being called Smeagol
yes, this is one of my favorite scenes from the trilogy, and I have many. Everything Gandalf says is so true, no one has the right to judge anyone and all we really do have to decide is what to do with the time that has been given to us. I think about those things often, also can you imagine what kind of world this would be if everyone put themselves last and everyone else first?
Christian? I think that this message can be understood in many ways. Here Gandalf does not speek of divine providence. He speaks of Fate. And Fate is not a Christian issue at all, although is very present in Germanic and Greco-Roman thinking.
This scene encapsulates the spirit of the entire Lord of the Rings story. It absolutely transcendental. I love how Peter Jackson fills the entire frame of the characters faces in capturing the expressivity of what Gandalf is saying. It's just perfect, and one of the most moving scenes I've ever seen. I'll never tire of this moment.
"Bilbo was meant to find the ring. In which case you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought." I love this quote. Did the Valar have some hand in having Bilbo find the Ring which set all of this in motion?
this sene goes hard its not only about the motives in the movie but the way things happen in life pretty deep just like the fate puke scene in the movie signs.
One of Ian McKellen's finest moments ever, I think... I teared up a little when I first saw this in the theater... He did Tolkien's words great justice
where the fuck is the movie about where the fuck is gandalf!?

@allgreen96 nice to see a follower of God among the many that deny his existence. I will let God be my guide and let his plan come to pass. :)

@horizen12 - Now this is the kind of 'success' that makes Tolkien timeless and his books a great literary work. Thanks for sharing this with us.

To those who claimed this to be a Christian scene,
"Do not be too eager to deal out death and judgement"
Maybe the Christians of the past, and some in the present, would've done well to follow this advice.

no everyone of every religion should listen to that.

Very true. Not just religious folks, actually. Everyone.

good show then! its funny that fictional works can carry a better message then the twits who lead nations

Purely Christianity? I think not. Most rationally minded and thoughtful people (including Atheists) would agree with Gandalf's sentiments.
dancebaby808 2 years ago 4
Hardly Christian, Gandalf's wisdom speaks of the power of fate.
