Also, I think I've found the BEST way to wash them. We have hard water. I was using Tide Free & Gentle liquid detergent, just ran out (same jug for 6 months, lol!). So I bought some Nature Clean powdered detergent, and Calgon (powder) water softener. I think it worked much better, and rinsed a lot cleaner.
I don't like cloth at night. They never leaked or anything, very absorbent. But the SMELL in the morning! SO gross, ugh. That and he got a bad "ammonia burn" once from being really wet but not waking up overnight. :( Besides, I find it harder to get the ammonia smell out when you have inserts that are absolutely soaked with pee. So I use disposables overnight, and still love my cloth during the day! :)
i think it should be mentioned that not all cloth diapers work the same on all babies, so just because bumgenius worked great for mamanatural, doesn't mean they will for all who are watching. it just sucks when you invest in an entire stash of one kind of diaper and they don't work for you and your baby.
Oops, I see a few people have already asked this question. Sounds like they work pretty well :). I like to keep things simple and just get one kind of diaper, so the BG 4.0 looks like a good choice.
How did the 4.0 fit on a newborn? I am currently 6 months pregnant and leaning towards getting Bum Genius as I also have head great reviews on them :)
I've tried a few different kinds of (cloth) diapers, and honestly, I think one works just as well as the other. After watching a couple videos of how to use flats, I think they'd be just as good, too. I found a video earlier using a folded t-shirt for a diaper, and another that shows you how to make prefolds from t-shirts! So cool. Doesn't get much cheaper than that!
If you go to Cotton Babies website you can get them in a bunch of bright colors and patterns. I absolutely LOVE by bumGenius! Wish I had had them from the very start, rather than the prefold with pins and covers. (ugh)
how do u guys handle the bfeeding poops you know they are all watery and explosive at times... that is one of my concerns that's the only thing that is holding us back from making the change to cloth diaper. Our baby is 3 months old
@latitiko We haven't had too many "blowouts." The diapers can hold a lot of mess :). We just spray them off in toliet and put in diaper pail. It's been great.
Thank you so much for this video! I have been searching for hours for information on ALL the aspects of bumgenius, and by far... your video series on all the aspects are the BEST! And I love that you are precise, direct, and informative about the facts of each. Can you PLEASE do a review on the new bumgenius All in One Size, with that built in flap thing. Thanks!
Sorry I meant did you use Bumgenius One size diaper day 11 or Bumgenius xs newborn or small all in ones? I am starting a stash and am not sure if my bumgenius one size diapers will fit a newborn. Also on the disposables what brand did you use?
@miladyrigel I used the one size diaper. For the disposables, some were from the hospital, not sure what brand, and then we had Seventh Generation organic ones at home.
What diapers did you use the first ten days after being born? And did you go straight into using the Bumgenius one size or did you have a different newborn diaper?

@LShumate1010 I bought 24. This let me go through anywhere from 6-12 a day, depending on baby's age/bowels. We average doing diaper laundry every three days so has worked well.
Wonderful video! Here is a question though. For frugal mommies: obviously with the way these expand they can be used for a baby's whole diaper life! But which would last longer in your opinion; snaps or hook and loop? I figure these cloth diapers could last for several children, as long as the components hold up!
@Kmfish1 Most definitely could hold up for several children. bumGenius are guaranteed for one year, and I see them lasting much longer if you take care of them.
That said, I think the snaps would last longer. Hook n loop are easier to use, more like disposables. But the snaps seem more rugged.
@thebabymuse Yep, they're handmade. Just not by me :) They're by Wanda Hirsch of Maple Shade Kids. We saw her work on Etsy and loved it, and then worked together on these designs. The lion and eagle at bottom represent our son Griffin :) Google Maple Shade Kids to see her work and reach out to her.
They are also made in the USA (a few in Egypt) unlike the competitor that everyone loves that are manufactured in China.. if that is important to you. =)
Omgshh ! I love Mama Natural and Family ! you are so wonderful to watch and so sweet and lovely. thank you !

@jennayoung99 Yes, this is what worked for me. That's all I do is share my experience. You can always buy a small quantity to test first.

@miladyrigel We used disposables for the first 10 days since they were tarry and black with meconium. Day 11 on, we've used BumGenius.

@Kmfish1 Definitely! I'd say the snaps are a *bit* more resilient and yes, I know people that have used them year after year with different kids.
