I remember when I first heard this song at a dance at a frat house during my freshman yr of college. I didn't know anything about the lyric, just loved the way it sounded. It's my favorite song ever.
A fair amount of wishy-washy sentimentality here. I love this song but let's not forget the left do not run the franchise on enlightenment, nor have the right cornered the market on morality. Additionally it might be time for the species on the whole to accept it's nasty nature and shed this "divine" charade once and for all... once we get comfortable with this hideous condition perhaps we will inflict less harm on our environments; mental and physical?
The only way I could deal with this song was to DANCE to it. DANCE AND DANCE to it ! Am I right? Powerful - and the fade out fake out - too much-although not the first time that trick was used - sure is effective. Marvin was serious.
On this date in 1971 {Feb. 20th} "What's Going On" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} and spent 15 weeks in the Top 100.

Thank God Marvin didn't listen to Berry Gordy or we would have never heard this song. Thanks MG for taking a leap of faith and stepping into your own. Praying you're resting in peace.
@StatenIzzy1 When Marvin was with Motown and played this song for Berry Gordy, he told Marvin it was the worst song he'd ever heard. Anna told Marvin he was crazy if he didn't put it out. Gordy wanted Marvin to continue to sing the basic love songs he'd been singing for Motown. He told him no one wanted to hear about war and pollution. WRONG! Thank God, Marvin didn't listen and stepped out. I wasn't a Marvin before this came out. After this, I was hooked.

@takeit2thehoopify I have to tell you,I'm scared too! Because it was never THIS bad! In my years, the Republicans were almost human, the religious were irreverlent. But now, they are absolutlly vicious and rabid!!! It's like they KNOW they are going to lose
. They know the (forgive the derogatory terms) niggers, faggots, spics and bithes are taking over and it's driving them berserk!!!
@TuberOnTheLoose Also,I saw the video in New York City of some young women who were already "kettled" and just standing there being peppersprayed without any provocation whatsoever!! So there IS police brutallity!! I also saw a picture in Oakland CA of an ELDERLLY woman drenching with pepperspray!! So what's going on?! Have the occupyers hit a nerve?!
@TuberOnTheLoose And where was that? In my own hometown of Tulsa OK,I saw the video of some occupyers, sitting just inside the grass from the sidewalk so "inside" the park, sitting in line being peppersprayed a few inches from their faces, one cop even grabed a guy by the hair and sprayed him just a few inches from the face!! It was sicking police brutallity!!!
@timmy841212 Also, with all the protests and demonstrations, like for gay marriage, issues are being raised that were never issuses before. AgainSteven pinker's The Better angles tells of the rights revolution, civil rights, womens rights, animal rights and gay rights, issues are being raised that weren't before. And now the GLOBAL occupy movement and Arab Spring, the whole world is happening! We'll have to fight tooth &nail for our rights, but yes indeed, there IS hope
@timmy841212 The world has always been violent and injust. In fact it was much MUCH worst. I'm sorry to be the bearer of GOOD news but we never had it so good! You should read "The Better Angles of Our Nature" by Steven Pinker, it shows the charts graphs of how murder and other violent crimes are HALF what they were in 1991 ( the second highest peak after 1980). I'm 54 years old and come to think of it,it was more dangerous in the 1970s

Great video timmy841212, about protests and injustice then and now. While I support same sex marriage I think you over-emphasised it in todays protests. What about the occupy wall street movement? A good counter-point to the civil rights activist being attacked by police dogs would be an occupyer being peppersprayed.
@rayraydude1 - The only winners in gay marriage will be divorce lawyers.
Most people don't know the true story of the famous pepper spray incident. A group of occupiers circled a group of police officers, linked arms, and sat down, effectively imprisoning the officers inside their circle. They were asked several times to clear a path for the officers to exit. They refused and then they got sprayed. They did not get sprayed for nothing as so many people would have you believe.

LISTEN to the SONG!! stop commenting on the controversial parts of this video. Just listen to song what's going on. I cried the day he was shot but it was later found out his father had a brain tumor it's just so sad that a man who sang about love and peace was killed in such a tragic, violent way. RIP
Nice post and nice sentiment. One thing we can rejoice in is that human souls have ALWAYS spoken above the system in protest. All races, all nationalities, all eras have musicians who wove webs of protest and comfort for the masses during times of control and oppression. Many, many, many symphonies and such were written in times of horrific monarchy and church control -- control which would KILL you for heresy or complaint -- and the composers seeded their music with visions of improvement.
"If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry" (19:10). Jesus's effective reply? "Yep." He says, "there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can" (19:12).
"eunuchs" those who have "renounced marriage." More simply? Avoid marriage if at all possible, as it will hinder your religious progress.
If we ever needed this song..we need it today. Where is the love for humanity anymore? Was there ever any love for humanity? This song will get you to thinking. I love it!
A moneyless, classless, stateless communities of humanity sharing the Earth in cooperation harmony and wisdom for our common needs and well being. The market system of artificial scarcity and the wage slavery of the working class is the historic process of private property relationship of alienation, exploitation and suffering of our common humanity. A majority democratic movement of no leaders no followers to transcend the CLASS RULE. WE SHALL OVERCOME
@summersbr1 Yeah that's what I took from what happened on that day. I don't condone a parent doing that. That's as low as the son shooting the parents. Just shot him in cold blood all because he was protecting his mother. smh
Do not re-write history. Civil rights had nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing at all to do with the immoral homosexual agenda. Stop getting it twisted. Get is STRAIGHT. Pun intended. I've had it up to here with gayism tryin to cram it down my throat! Stop the co-option. Stop it now.
@towerofcastle If you're talkin about Cindy Lauper... I was just havin fun. If you're talking about the homo thing... well... you should pause and consider the FACT that the God of the Bible abosolutely HATES (His words) HATES and ABHORS certain things. Sin is one. God HATES sin. In fact, in heaven, there is no sin. Why? God hates it. And on the earth, HOMOSEXUALITY is on the list of things that God absolutely hates. Now, you may disagree with God. Bottomline: God has the last word.
Where does Jesus condemn Homosexuality? It was RAMPANT during the Roman occupation of Jerusalem and the entire area. You would have thought Jesus would have had SOMETHING to say about it. In fact, he condemned MARRIAGE! Wow, you need to go back to Bible skol.
@kevc21 Why can't you just let people live their lives how they want, just because someone has different beliefs doesn't mean you have to be a horrible person towards them. Learn to love.
This is my favorite song by Marvin Gaye with a powerful message that's still relevant today and our world leaders need to step it up and fight for peace and understanding of each other instead of being greedy and trying to out do each other. The time is now my brothers and sisters. ALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!
always one of the best songs of that time..so many meories come back ...but the sad thing is that nothing, absolutly nothing has changed...unbelievable...
@MrSkegman Who? Marvin? I think he was a nice dude but he had issues. You have to read on his father. Both of them had a lot of demons. But I don't condone what his dad did even if Marvin did attack him that night (for yelling at his mother).
@timmy841212 You can't write songs like this and sing with so much soul if you've not got a good heart, he's left us a legacy of music that I'll always be grateful for, Miss him loads
@MrSkegman, Wow, how do people make comments and dont know half the story? Marvin and his father had issues with each other but the day he was killed, it occurred after fighting with his father trying to protect his mother. His father was abusive to her
@GenesisKnights Yeah that's why Marvin and Berry went for that one but this version was the one radio first put out in January 1971 before Motown settled on the one that faded just as one of the guys go "get the football man!" lol
Imagine how different music and this world would be if legends and peacemakers like Marvin Gaye, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr., were still alive today...how different this world would be. How peaceful.
@jerseyirish Well if you read my comment correctly then you would've noticed I said "peacemakers like.." meaning more than just these three men. But ill just use two. Turmoil? Yea maybe, but you cant deny that it would be different (as said in my comment) and somewhat more peaceful. Think about what great affect Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. would have on the masses of people; the message of peace, Christian and Muslims alike. If you think none, than you are the one in a fantasy world sir
It's getting better. I know at times it doesn't seem like it. But look how far we've come in 40 years. I'm not saying we're there yet, you just gotta keep on wanting it, and keep believing it, and keep spreading the love. I'm a 48 year old white male. I was to young for Vietnam, but I remember, and it's all getting better. Not sure it's ever going to be perfect.
This song is why research to peacefully expose toxic evil people and organizations with their supporters. Planet Earth has too much hate with preventable reasons. Always peacefully challenge corrupt, toxic, and evil people with evidence that are acceptable in a criminal trial.
Always peacefully expose corrupt, toxic, and evil people
"Marvin Gaye was ahead of his time, this song bring so much peace to the soul"! " It's been 40 years and seem like yesterday, this song have put a stamp on life because if you look at it, the question is still asked today "WHAT'S GOING ON"?? " A SALUTE TO A FALLEN GENIUS"!! "WHAT'S GOING ON MR MARVIN GAYE"??!!!
Let it be known I'm NOT a fan of politics or "parties", both sides are cruel and both sides always push war as an agenda. My intention was to promote love...really.
@timmy841212 My question is since there are more morons on this planet today than ever... How the hell do you even attempt to love a freakin' moron?? Morons in all places... politics, business corps, religions and even regular everyday morons!!
When this song was written... believe it or not, but this world was in a MUCH better place than it is today!!
@TheBadAssKiller I understand why you say that... I can't really judge on how time was then but I guess you have to be around to make that assumption that things were actually better then. Thanks for commenting. :)
Well you did a fantastic job. One of the finest presentations I have seen. Choice of music and picts made your point extremely well. Wonderful,I love it.
My mother just pass, I know she is in a better place now. I know God didn't make this world to be as bad as it is now. But its going to get worst. unless something is done.
To ALL those that fought in Vietnam, no matter what a minority of people say .....you will always remain as HEROS to thousands of people from the US, Australia, NZ, & Korea. The way the returned servicemen & women were treated on their return home was disgusting and will forever be a disgrace on those pigs that turned there backs on these brave soldiers in their hour of need! For those brave souls that didn't return home RIP, your govt closed it's eyes but we WILL NEVER FORGET YOU,FOREVER STRONG
@GoldCoastKiwi4209 Were you alive then? Because nobody at home "turned their backs" on them. That spitting stuff never happened - look it up. We at home felt great sympathy and camaraderie with the drafted men and women. We all came to hate the War together, because the government lied about it so much.
What DID happen is that when the Vietnam vets marched on the Pentagon to say "Bring them home," the Nixon White House tried to make them into unpatriotic monsters. Watch "Born in the USA"
@tthomaselli2 lol that's the version that radio released. Originally they put this version out first but the one that got popular was the one with the fade after you hear someone scream "get the football man."
Thanks for an original recording, takes me back,he sang to heal a broken hearted nation, his music did a lot to bring people together, this song when it came out was big ,took balls back then to put it in the systems face, cops were beating and sometimes killing protesters ,vietnam was killing soldiers by t he hundreds everyday, man things were fucked up. His genius was only surpassed by the size of his heart.
@timmy841212 freedom at last....xxxx i beleived in marvin he gave me the strength and love and guidance i needed to save the world from, brutallity.when you you believe things come true keep the faith, throw good and bad xx love you all.....big hugsxxx remeber time is the greastest healer, god blessxxxxxxxx
Very well-timed tribute to this song. Thanks for posting. I have this original single. My favorite memory of hearing it on the radio was the DJs not knowing about the false fade. The end of the song would creep up on them while they were talking! American Top 40 always played the retail copies of every song, so Casey Kasem left the fade play as is. Most radio stations liked the novelty of it at first, but opted for the LP version which ended normally or they faded it themselves. Great song!
Since this year marks the 40th anniversary of its release and due to the recent reports of unrest in Egypt I dedicate this song to those brave protesters and to anyone still fighting to improve this bitter Earth.
thot he always said there was a grenade stuck to him @1:09

Where does Jesus condemn Homosexuality? It was RAMPANT during the Roman occupation of Jerusalem and the entire area. You would have thought Jesus would have had SOMETHING to say about it. In fact, he condemned MARRIAGE! Wow, you need to go back to Bible skol.
beerman1957 2 months ago
@beerman1957 - ...For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.
Doesn't sound like condemning marriage to me.

ALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!

i don't know
MrSkegman 4 months ago 2
@MrSkegman Who? Marvin? I think he was a nice dude but he had issues. You have to read on his father. Both of them had a lot of demons. But I don't condone what his dad did even if Marvin did attack him that night (for yelling at his mother).
timmy841212 4 months ago 2
@timmy841212 You can't write songs like this and sing with so much soul if you've not got a good heart, he's left us a legacy of music that I'll always be grateful for, Miss him loads

@MrSkegman Maybe his father was a nice person, I don't know...but I did hear that he was a minister.
BgMsDangerus 4 months ago

JonnyBoy723 4 months ago
@JonnyBoy723 You're living in a fantasy if you think that's true.
jerseyirish 4 months ago
@jerseyirish Why is that?
JonnyBoy723 4 months ago
@JonnyBoy723 Because its false. If those three men were alive the world would still be in the turmoil it's in.

JonnyBoy723 4 months ago

GoldCoastKiwi4209 9 months ago 4
@GoldCoastKiwi4209 Were you alive then? Because nobody at home "turned their backs" on them. That spitting stuff never happened - look it up. We at home felt great sympathy and camaraderie with the drafted men and women. We all came to hate the War together, because the government lied about it so much.
What DID happen is that when the Vietnam vets marched on the Pentagon to say "Bring them home," the Nixon White House tried to make them into unpatriotic monsters. Watch "Born in the USA"

Great song!
