  • shes so perfect she doesnt need da dancing the hair swingin the being half naked cuz hur voice iz simply beautiful and doesnt need any distraction unlike most nowadays R.I.P Miss Lovely

  • She sang this song. I think it was real for her. She committed suicide over a man & she battled depression. So sad for such a gorgeous, talented woman. I cried when I heard she died.

  • I have watched this so many times and I will never get tired of it. This woman could sing and is soooo sorely missed, R.I.P. Phyllis Hyman. Your music reminds us of how amazing you truly were!

  • It's sad to say, but many women can relate to this gorgeous woman. You expect your life to go a certain way, but it doesn't turn out that way. I can definitely relate. Her voice is just stunning and is missed.

  • WOW! Just WOW! Tears running down my face and my son's! He's 17! The girl was,is, and always will be GREAT! We miss her dearly!

  • SHE FELT THAT DAMN SONG! THIS IS WHAT TRUE MUSIC AND WORDS NEED TO DO TO THE ARTISIT, YOU SAW SHE WAS FEELING IT, THATS REAL MUSIC IN MY MIND

  • im living for this outfit

  • Her speaking voice is VERY smokey, but i think shes a Smokey soulful belter!!!

  • So emotional. This song make me cry because the pain in her music was her actual life.I will never understand how she could be so beautiful, talented and successful yet be so miserable and lonely. Life is not easy. I just wish she knew how much she was loved. I wish she was strong enough to hold on.

  • ifeel so idont evenn knoww whenn i hear thiss ijustt wanna hear it over and over and over(:

  • I am awed each time I watch this. She is so amazing.

  • I am awed by her each time I watch this. She is so amazing.

  • One of the last real great diva's before they changed the meaning of the word.

  • Phyllis Hyman was such a great artist! Thanks for sharing this!

  • NEVER ANOTHER

  • There is and never will be anyone like Phyllis Hyman.

  • I love this song. It's way too bad she decended into darkness. It's a path any of us we can stumble upon.

  • If she weere still alive, I bet she would be one of the top performing artists of the day

  • Now this is real singing...

  • She was the best that ever did it!

  • Amazing singer and almost too beautiful.

  • I will always remember you Phyllis. The Blue Note, Greenwich Village, New York. All of you fans (us) miss you.

  • DAMN I miss Phyills, I cried like a baby when she died and I was a kid??????

  • OMG is that Billy Preston on the organ!!!!!!!!!

  • Phyllis Hyman AND Billy Preston Sharing A Stage?

    Incredible!

  • I have been searching for this song on Rhaposy.... they do not have it. I wonder if its because of the way she died........alone....and they felt maybe they shouldn't carry this particular song......I don't know... I just know that Phyllis is greatly missed... she was talented beyond her means. She touches my soul, everytime I hear her sing. But this song is my favorite....Rest in peace Phyllis.

  • For those who thought Phyllis was crazy because she committed suicide, well, she was not crazy. In case you did not know, “crazy” only applies to people that fail to see the senseless in their behavior. However, Phyllis saw that her behavior was abnormal, so she took measures to make it normal.

  • True story. Thanks to Detroit radio stations, I knew this womans voice since I was a kid. I just knew Himon (I spelled it wrong on my cassette). Then I saw a picture of her. OMG. Then I did the true research pre-1980's. What a talent, what a voice. She acknowledged my recognition of her and treated me like royalty until May 1995 (the last time we met and talked). What we're idolizing today? Heaven Help Us All. She was "presence" in all aspects. Untouchable.

  • ohh Phyllis i love your music u maybe gone but u left us with a treasure R.I.P

  • She Had a good sense of humor and she was very beautiful!!! mmmm it ashame she died 9 years later.

  • Ms Hyman really throws herself into her songs..u can she how emotional she gets..SPLENDID..u can't help but 2 ADORE her..WOW!!

  • The great Billy Preston & that wonderful band know theyre accompnying Royalty, and the bass player is definitely making love with Phyllis.

Cant stop viewing this video! Addicted!

  • @TheSolaris810

You and I are on the same wave with Phyllis and the base player! Some days I come here and play it three/four times in a row. I can't get enough of this woman and I miss her dearly!

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I just saw her on Unsung this morning and I'm still sad. I remember when she died and I just didn't want to believe it.

  • This has to be one of the greatest ever performances. Lets face it, the World then was too small for Phyllis Hyman. She had the lot- perhaps too much for one person.

It is also one of the greatest tragedies that this gigantic talent died so young and did not receive the adulation that lesser talents enjoyed then. What a great dramatic and comedic actress she would have been on film. Come to think it, the world is perhaps too small for Phyllis!

  • I loved this album. I had it on heavy rotation back in the day. Every track is quality. You don't get many albums like that these days. R.I.P XXXX

  • There will never be another Phyllis Hyman, forever in my heart. Rest In Peace, Ms. Hyman.

  • One of my Favorites.

  • This woman knew her angles. She was working that camera!

  • I prefer to be alone but I still LOVE this song and Ms. Hyman's (plus Preston & Co.) performance! Thank You.

  • My father died that same summer of 1995 and I'll always remember Phyllis Hyman and my father. I can related to the pain that she's going through. Loneliness is a sad feeling!

  • rip my bestie

  • Luv her music... and such a nice sense of humor. R.I. P.

  • love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Everywhere i go to see an excellent singer someone has to mention Bey....WTF?Theres sumthin mentally wrong with folks who mention her on the pages of ROYAL artists such as Miss Hyman, shame on y'all.

  • I can't stop watching this; she is so incredible!! I mean she really is putting her all into this song, so much raw emotion!! She was just a beautiful, smart, well spoken, classy lady, I really hope she found peace. RIP Phyllis, God Bless your soul!

  • Fucking awesome

  • LOVE !!!!!

  • GAHHHHHHHHH DAYUM!!!! In total shock!

  • she has a very clean voice and the band is tight. she's one of my favorites and influences in my musical career

  • wow

  • I think all really good singers with natural, god- given talent are in church, honestly. You hafta be ass- out in order to be famous know.

  • I wonder if Beyonce can whistle as well as she sings. Just Sayin.

  • @ThePrettylocs no dont ever think to compare her to phyllis again

  • Her voice makes you want to SHOUT!!!! You feel her voice down to your soul. And who can whistle like that? WOW!!! So much talent has left us forever. R.I.P. Phyllis Hyman!!

  • Interesting, whistling during a song performance. Great whistling at that!

  • I Love this so much! She was go good at what she did.

  • NOBODY FROM THE PAST OR TODAY HAS A BETTER VOICE OR IS A BETTER PERFOMER THAN HER...SWEET ANGLE....THAT IS THE BADDEST ONE RIGHT THERE .REALEST DIVE EVA..BRINGS TEARZ TO MY EYES EVERYTIME

  • I'm in agreement with some of the other comments, This talented woman never recieved the full recognition of Her talented ability. And My opinion is that THE MUSIC INDUSTRY of today doesn't recognize good natural talent, I'ts all who You know in the business, Some People win grammys, sell millions of records, and put them before a live audience THEY can't hold a note, let alone sing. I'm wondering Who do they have working in the A&R depts. in the major record labels.

  • I LOVED HER LIKE SHE WAS MINE.

  • SHE NEVER got the FULL recognition she deserved as a singer. Many failed her on a professional level. Trying to break out on the Philly scene...Patti LaBelle overshadowed her for whatever reason (management, record label etc).....I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND THAT. PHYLLIS WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER IN SO MANY WAYS. Today's singers/performers cannot even be compared to the talent Phyllis had.

  • Its so unfortunate that she took her own life back in the mid 90s. Such a lost to the industry

  • She was the BADDEST chick

  • her voice makes me wanna take my clothes off. its not right. love me all over phyllis with your lovely voice.

  • I cant listen to this song,it makes me cry cuz shes singing her lifes story.

  • Wow she sings And whistle good! Phyllis Hyman was Amazing!

  • POWERFUL YET SO FEMININE, THIS IS WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THIS WOMAN AS A MAN. BEAUTIFUL, COURAGEOUS, SMART, AND LOVED HER PEOPLE, BUT IN THE END TRAGIC, I MISS HER SO.

  • BASS PLAYER FEELING IT AND I AM TOO...RIP MS. HYMAN ON OF THE BEST...

  • I wish her mother could've offered me some lessons in whistling cause I'm in dire need of it. my technique (or lack thereof) is simply not cutting it. But in all seriousness, her talent was supreme.

  • NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE IN MY LIFE! BECAUSE I WAS BORN IN "88" RIGHT BEFORE MUSIC TURNED BAD.

  • @CurveAngel Wow! I'd have to agree! Good observation!

  • @CurveAngel WHHHAT I FEEL YA I SAy MUSIC TURNED BAD AFTER 1998..but i say that soul left in 1992 I was born that year and most song after that year didn't get down like this!!! R.I.P. Miss Hyman

  • @CurveAngel right me too...a year before i was born :(

  • @CurveAngel not tru,the 90's had some good music 2.lol

  • listen to the lyrics in her music, it relates to herself.

  • Superb performance ,so much emotion in her interpretation.Love Phyllis Hyman nobody like her.

  • DAMN!!! i CAN SEE ALL HER PAIN MAN!!! OMG!!!!

  • @TeyonceInFullEffect You are so right...I know exactly how she feels because I have the same amount of pain and doubt about myself. That's why I love her so much. However, I will try and conquer my situations so that I don't end up like her.

  • @libratech83 Pls do whatever you need to do! Somebody needs you here! I am so sorry that you find yourself in such a dark place...I pray for peace for you. I claim it for you! Keep me posted...

  • Wow, thats some serious whistling. Sounds just like a bird. Never heard of her until today, but, this chick is for real.

  • It's an honor to even watch this. She's great in EVERY single way! I wish I found out about her earlier. I hate missing out on such great talent. Especially since these no-talent people been taking over the music scene. Sucks...but at least I got to see her in action even if it is through video recording.

btw:she's the ebst whistler I ever seen! That's talent!

  • What five, said they didnt like her...wow..she is a LEGEND...one of a few who can do it GREAT LIVE!

  • @CRErocks That's exactly what i was wondering!Probably some retards that listen to that mess they claim is "real music".I'm 28 & i don't listen 2 the radio or watch videos unless it's VH1 soul.PH is my ultimate fav female singer & majority of the music i listen 2 came out b4 I was born, so i'm constantly frustrated because most of the artist that I love r no longer w/ us.I grieve a little every day 4 Phyllis because she was so phenominal & intriguing & had so much more to offer than she knew.

  • @RetroDimeDiva - I SO agree with you!!! 5 people MUST live all alone if they can't LOVE her music!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!

  • @nurCharli And they must be brain damaged or hearing impaired or blind too because Phyllis was the consumate all around performer. Not only would her voice captivate you, but she also told a story with her eyes. I've never seen someone carry so much emotion in a glance the way that she did, nor have I seen anyone so readily wear their emotions on their sleve to deliver a performance. Really, what more could you ask of a performer?

  • What a talent...

  • that girl wore them hats!

  • Fantabulous!

  • Amazing, Awesome, Absolutely Tight and Sopshisticated lady and voice...Miss her so much..She left us some GREAT classic music..

  • you don't like Phyllis Hyman you Love her the very best and then God broke the mold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @hymanandhyman He sho'll did!!!! We just have to be thankful that we were blessed with the time that we got and the legacy that she has left for us to enjoy. God was needing a new lead singer in his choir, so he called on the best to fill the spot. There will NEVER EVER be another Phyllis Hyman, baby!!

  • 5 people lives all alone....

  • She's got a classical & jazz pianist working along with the small basis piano, the closest one commanded by the famous Billy Preston!

  • She's the only one that made me so happy I laughed! This girl was "BAD". She's got (2) Pianos, Big Hammond B3 & she SCATS & Whistles! (WOW).

  • Such poise and elegance! Um, Um, Um!!! Someone should do a film about her. Dana "Queen Latifah" Owens should play her part! My opinion.

  • @cgamonwhit That is a great idea. I bet she could get an Oscar nod if it were done right.

  • Words cant explain i always loved this lady music

  • Miss My #1 DIVA!!! Not only sing and melt my heart but my girl could wear a hat!! NO DOUBT THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!

  • who ever dont like diz so dumb this is real music

  • Gives me chills every time I watch it!!She whistled with just as much passion as she has when she sings...it's amazing to watch!

  • when are we going to get a movie about her/?? i would love to see jasmin sullivan play her

  • @bellacnella18 i know i was thinking the same thing too jazmine would do her justice

  • This is by far the best live performance Ive ever heard in the 19 years I been livin. Good song, good music, beautiful notes, beautiful women, and R.I.P Phyllis.

  • MAN SHE IS THE TRUTH

  • I miss these days back then, good music <3

  • mlovmo...no need to fret, back in the day she was huge. We truly appreciated Phyllis's talent back in the 70's..and I was lucky enough to see her live twice. unfortunately she was a lady who sought love and never seemed to attain it. She took her life due to a broken heart.......he talent was and still is undeniable.......

  • thanks so much for putting this up. i saw this wayyyy back when she performed . we stood up and cheered .... awesome performance.... what a DIVA!

  • The words in her songs and they way she performed them were so full of passion and conviction. You can tell that she was hurt by someone. I was working at a radio station when the news came that she committed suicide and my heart sunk. Phyllis Hyman, gone to soon.

  • @Mssnoopy501 yeah, my heart break also. She had such an amazing voice. People need to come to terms with Mental illness, it aint' no joke. I work with vicitms in crime cases, and even today, people look the other way with folks who deal with a mental condition. It took Donny Hathaway, and Phyllis, it's time for us to deal with it, and support our people and people period who battle this.....Lady L.

  • We miss U Phyllis

  • Amazing talent true Diva

  • i enjoyed her since her early days in music. im a huge fan ,this performance is top notch. the best in her field. her depression got her. for me i felt and still do feel a tremendous loss. her voice sings on in my head and heart . shes truely missed. JIM

  • It's never too late to catch on to Phyllis Hyman....she will always be timeless. I have loved her since her beginnings and still kick myself for missing the opportunity to see her live. I had a family obligation when she came to my city more than 20 years ago.... I was working in a downtown fabric store and found when I returned that not only had I missed her performance (which I knew I would've anyway), but had miss the day when she and her stylist visited the shop where I worked.

  • A friend of mine sold them fabric that became her dress on the cover of "Prime of My Life"

  • Would you just listen to that speaking voice, still sounds like shes singing. Those eyes are just so mesmerizing. What an Angel, I see why God was a little stingy. Love your spirit Miss Hyman, truely a great loss.

  • She was so down to earth and my goodness could she sang her ass off. Who would of thought this Queen was so unfullfilled in life?

  • god i wish i can whistle like that

  • Like...damn!

  • cool hat.

  • A vocal tsunami that engulfs you all of a sudden !! Thanks for posting!! I just love her and miss her terribly.

  • AMMMMMAZING!!!

  • Damn...she's just so...raw. The emoting, I mean. And she has such control at the same time...I don't know how to put it into words.

Why would I PAY to see some pseudo-singing/dancing model of the likes that are popular now? I would consider it an honor to buy a ticket to hear her sing. Can't stop watching this...why didn't more people know about her? Her label must have sucked. I feel like I'm 25 years too late. Shit.

  • @mlovmo.......i agree wholeheartedly

  • @mlovmo I was privileged to buy a few of those tickets....such a tragic ending to a beautiful career! RIP Phyllis.

  • @mlovmo..... i wanna kiss you for making this comment lol

  • @mlovmo believe me there are singers out here who protray her soul, u and i just dont know nothing about them because the media wants u to be naked to be idolized, the ONLY soulful singer that has a chance at a lasting career is Adele. thats if the media doesnt tear her down for being too big,of course there are great singers out there (beyonce mariah) but even they have to weaken their talent for this media its sad , R&B is basically extinct, :( much love <3

  • @TwiiterBitch dude i believe in music and im one of the best i think iim bringing back real singing not that shit the put on the radio call it music autotune to death this artist cant even perform live dude sub my channel cause next month im bringing unique talent to the field and taking music back to where your ass have to sing

  • damn man her voice is powerful i mean all of her notes were on point perfect performer ppl take notes my god bless her soul

  • June 30 1995... 16 years ago an exceptionally talented lady and a rare gem left us. Such a great loss. RIP Phyllis Hyman

  • The band is tight!

  • flawless!!!!

  • Epic voice! She sung with such ....Effortless!!!

  • If she were alive today...that voice was one of a kind

  • 2:40,nothing but talent!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow ... (that bass player cracks me up at the end) .. All she ever wanted was someone to hold her that she could trust. A very sensitive soul, thank you for leaving these musical gifts

  • If you ever take this video offa here Imma seek you out, find you, and beat your ass.

    - Thank you.

  • Nobody better miss her very much

  • @sailawaymusic I agree Ledisi comes close. Like Phyllis she sounds good live

  • Imagine what Phyllis Hyman and Marvin Gaye would of sounded like singing together!

  • @jgyll8mt Marvin and Phyllis? Interesting! Here's another thought - How about matching Alicia Keys talent on the piano with Phyllis Hyman's singing voice. "Old Friend" seems to be a good example of a song to such a hypothetical collaboration.

  • Jazmine Sullivan reminds me of her

  • 3:32 i love that part

  • Four people are living all alone.

  • She was a gorgeous woman and gracious she was talented.. rip...

  • unsung...indeed wat beautiful features. R.I.P

  • An original diva. Rest in peace ma'am.

  • They don't make them like her no more. RIP Phyllis

  • @jaylin40 there are some good singers that come from her like Ledisi check her out...

  • Comment removed

  • what a voice this women has , everytime i hear this song i get teary eyed becuase in this song you can tell she was a troulblled women by her expression , what a voice

  • She seems like she had a great personality. The answer she gave about "is fame what you thought it was?" ..that was a real answer...Unsung touched on her failed relationships as a reoccuring problem in her life. She was a beautiful women, very talented...don't know why she didn't have a great man by her side

  • I met her once - she was sitting next to me at her own concert - LOL! Yep, she snuck out to see the opening act Bill Withers and sat right next to me in the dark. No one noticed but I did. I was dumbfounded. She told me she'd autograph my ticket if I didn't scream. I stayed quiet and I still have that ticket. I will always love her. I can still see us sitting here singing Grandma's hand with Bill - that was a magical experience. I miss you Phyllis... always.

  • @robirob12000 cute story

  • @robirob12000 You are one lucky person. I too love her, thanks for sharing that wonderful experience.

  • Everytime i hear this song it sends shivers down my spine and fills my eyes with tears.. such a stunning vocalist who ooozes such beauty. RIP Queen of Soul

  • i cann feel it

  • This voice... is just ridiculous. Wish she was around to teach these kids about REAL vocality and performance!

  • @SYDrewz amen to that, u can say that again. She would be a great vocal coach, to this non singers of today!

  • @SYDrewz She was the original Triple Threat

  • shes literally singin her ovaries out! Go girl!

  • DAMN PHYLLIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 4 dislikes..please idiots

  • She's the only woman I know of who sounds exactly as she does live as on her recordings, if not better!!!

  • I LOVE YOU GREAT AUNTI PHYLLIS <3 <3

  • i hate the fact that this song isnt on itunes - well it is but only if you buy the whole album
