Whirlwind was originally a Normal type move, so it makes since that Bulbasaur could have learned it in the original series.

This was actually a translation error. In the Japanese version, Ash simply said "blow the sleep powder away." Blow Away is the Japanese name of Whirlwind, so they must have thought he meant the attack.

i remember i had a glitched version of pokemon silver on the gameboy color, i had a caterpie that learned seismic toss and earthquake. The better part was, i did not want my caterpie to evolve into a metapod because it would loose all its moves and only know harden but i didnt realize that my caterpie went up a level and i went to the bathroom then it evolved but it still had the moves. and when i leveled up again, it learned fire blast, then at the next level it learned Hyper beam :D
