While we are at it, another rhythm with groupings of three notes is the Slide, in 12/8 time sig: ONE two three two two three three two three four two three/ ONE two three two two three three two three four two three/....
A Slide can easily be confused with a Jig, since two jig measures fits into one slide measure. Focus on where are the accented beats.
Then there is the Mazurka, 3/4 time sig. one TWO three/ one TWO three/...
A waltz is 3/4 time sig. ONE two three/ONE two three...
The Butterfly is a Slip Jig, correctly played and taught in this lesson, in 9/8, but mis-labelled a Jig in the title.
All of these rhythms composed of groups of three notes can "sort of" fit into another time signature -3/4, 6/8, 9/8 if you ignore the accent. Each of these rhythms has unique dances that go along with the rhythm. The Butterfly is not a Waltz.
One minor detail, the rhythm. 9/8 time signature makes this a Slip Jig. I count the measures like this: ONE two three, two two three, three two three/ ONE two three, two two three, three two three/..... (CAP = accent) Just like your lesson, three groups of three 8th notes, accent on 1st.
A Jig is in 6/8 time sig., and sounds like this: ONE two three, two two three/ ONE two three, two two three/...
Liza I've heard of Dag tuning before, but is it nessesary to tune it as such to perform this simple tune? I mean it seems such an effort just to change back to normal once it's completed.
@angels77100 You can play it in standard tuning and it sounds good, but I'll compare it to a good meal that needs a little salt, it is better in DADGAD. DADGAD tuning is down from standard and it only changes half your strings. I prefer DADGAD or Drop D to standard anyway but I keep one of my guitars tuned to DADGAD all the time
@angels77100 If you just want to play any version of the tune, you might look for the tab for The Butterfly by Cruachan, it opens with an acoustic standard tuned version that sounds more like the mandolin, which I personally think this jig sounds best on, though you'll need a full sized guitar and it is slightly more difficult
@ievolve84 Thanks. Yes I've learnt this little piece using standard tuning and you're right. It's sounds fine, but not as awesome as it would with dadgad. Anyway I'm happy with it's sound and I can incorporate it in amongst my other compositions.
Do you mean the tab has an error in it, or you had trouble downloading it? Let me know, and I'll try to fix the problem. It's working fine on my end - so your help would be appreciated.-Lisa
It still won't download Lisa, I am running a Mac so that may be the problem. Really cool song and I was gonna finger pick it instead of flat picking it. Don't worry about it if it is a Mac issue.
Probably not a Mac issue, as I'm on a Mac too and it's working for me. If you send me your email address privately, I'll be happy to send you a PDF directly. It's a great tune, and there are only a few days left till St. Patrick's Day!

ORIGINALLY an Italian Lute piece.
BrikSwoony 1 year ago
It's not 9/8 time signature.
It is just in a 3/4 beat like a waltz.
You have not defined this correctly, 9/8 is totally different.

Really? Wow, I didn't know that. What's the name of the original version?

@crossyboy888
it was written by Tommy Potts (d. 1988) from Dublin- which is not in Italy last time I looked.
