@UpcomingJedi You're making a fuss over nothing. If you have the correct safety gear on (good eye protection, long sleeved smock/coverall that fits you well, closed safety footwear) any flying swarf won't be a problem. Try using a brush to clean out a deep, small diameter hole - It's just not practical.
Brushes do a slower, poorer job of cleaning holes out compared to compressed air, and when tapping you need that hole real clean. Make life simple for yourself!
Thanks for the VID, I have some quick questions. Can you angle the compound rest so the x slide could cut at an angle? Large lathes have a hole through so long bar stock can be used that extends out the left side of the machine, dose this have that feature? Could a tolerance be held to press fit a bearing onto a machine surface (yes no, maybe)? Thanks again
Great videos man. I'm about to purchase one and wanted to see some basics. Just what the Doc ordered. Please though, where did you get the quick change cutter mount?
So after reading as many reviews i could find on this little guy and after watching this 3 part series i went to my local Harbor Freight and bought it. I had a 20% off coupon out of Popular Mechanics so i only paid $399 for it. I also bought a drill chuck, some center drill bits and 2 cheap tooling sets.(5 piece 1/4" set for the parting tool, and a 10 piece carbide tipped set) I'm in the process of tearing it all apart to clean out all the shipping oil. Thanks for helping me decide on this! peace!
Just finished watching all 3 videos and i'd like to say thanks for the vids!! I've been thinking about buying one of these and i've read plenty of reviews and now your videos and i'm pretty sure i'm gonna buy one. Maybe the 8"x14"(?). I've been wanting to make some Gimbals for steadicams and this would work just fine for it. Plus i'm in the process of making a CNC machine to make other camera mounting gear. Any new updates? Maybe some examples of parts made? Again thanks for the share!! Peace!
Thanks for the video, I have wanted to buy one of these machines for quite some time, I now know the quality, and learned quite a bit form your demonstrations.
When I put my drill chuck in, it won't lock up. It just spins in the tailstock quill. Locking down the tailstock quill locking lever just stops the quuill from moving, but what do I do to lock it in so my bit doesn't spin when engaging the material? Thanks. Great video.
Make sure your tail stock is at least 1/2"-3/4" out and quickly snap the chuck into place, it should hold. When you back it out less than a 1/2" it wil release the chuck. Search Yahoo or Google for "little machine shop". They have the best mini lathe and milling accessories plus a great learning center for starters
Hey, thanks for making the videos! I have always wanted to know what people thought of Harbor Freight's lathes and this gave me some insight. I very much liked your response to the criticism that a commenter unfairly gave to you - but then I thought he was good to give you an apology too. "Keep-a-goin"
Clean things with a blow gun? not a good idea to have those chips flying around with high pressure air. A brush is better.

I bought a Cummins mini-lathe (7x12) a couple of years ago. Set up isn't complete, very long story...
This video would have been just as great viewing then as it is now. Your work in putting this together is highly appreciated.
