Was at this gig and yes they sounded none too flash. They'd just got off the plane from the states and sounded like the pilot mixed them too. Mate saw them a week later and were fab.
He does sond a bit rough live sometimes though I still rate Sugar as one of the best live acts I ever saw (and probably the loudest). Saw them in Britain a couple of times and Husker Du in Paris before that (that was also a great gig). The guy just makes a great noise!!!!!
this is Bob Mould of Husker Du, a cult post-punk band. This track is taken from Sugars debut album Copper Blue, they followed up with Beaster, which i found was a darker, conceptual offering. The track J.C Auto was released from that as a single. I saw them live in the early 90's, and they were v.god. Thats as much as i know, hope it helps.
wow, Finsbury Park, 1993? headliners The Cure, Belly , Carter USM, Frank and Walters, and some other people. I can't remember the date, but the USA had just beat England at football, and Bob Mould had just been outed by The Sun and shouted something about them being welcome to suck his cock any time.
@crushthevicar Yeah I was there as well dude. Sunday June 13 1993 Line up: The Cure Carter USM Sugar Belly The Frank & Walters Senseless Things Catherine Wheel Kingmaker The Family Cat Damon & Graham from Blur.
i have this show on a bootleg video. shot from the crowd and lots of obstructions sadly. but it also has a show from new york academy in 92 which is stunning. close filming but the bottom of the screen has a tracking line across it. if anyone can do a dvd of this and take off the line at the bottom like a widescreen effect, let me know.
Me too. Copper Blue was an incredible album. I'm not sure, but I think Good Idea predates Debaser by the Pixies. Also, If I Can't Change Your Mind is the pop song that Here Comes Your Man wants to be in a way. The Pixies are my favourite band, but the Husker Du/Sugar influence seems to have been forgotten
Debaser was released in 1989 on the Doolittle album by the Pixies. Copper Blue was released in 1992, which Good Idea was a track. Bob admired the Pixies and has been on record saying this was a tribute song.
I've got really fond memories of 'The Beat'. Back when I was 14 or so I used to set the video recorder cos it was on at 2 o'clock in the morning or something silly like that. Then I'd get up a 6am so I could watch it before school. It was a great show and got me into loads of brilliant bands especially Sugar, Kingmaker, Senseless Things, Oasis, Bivouac, The God Machine, Carter USM, Gigolo Aunts etc.
man... that was from Finsbury park when the Cure headlined I was there. It was completely sick. No one could touch em. I got some of the songs on VHS recorded off the TV... A good idea, Changes... A couple more. One day I'll upload em!
Hey mate, if you ever upload those let us know, i remember they showed some full songs on the beat just after great xpectations. i fell asleep on the couch while waiting to record it and ended up missing them. i've been beating myself up over it ever since....
exact one I'm talking about. got it off of The Beat with good ole Gary Crowley. I'll upload em next week and then let you know. They might not be great quality because it's all off of VHS but something's better than nothing right.

Wow. That clip was once available on a now-defunct Bob Mould tribute site and I haven't seen it in, like, 10 years. Thanks!

Hey! You`ve got good taste! A Good Idea by Sugar is as good as anything the Pixies ever wrote. Both fine bands... :-)

Debaser was from '89, Good Idea from '92. Bob even acknowledged the song was "Pixies Influenced".
