He interrupts his train of though, stares into his eyes intimidating him (notice the people he tried to approach are physically smaller and seem like they can be intimidated). He then rushes them, confusing the mind, while applying firm pressure on the shoulder. The person is also thinking of an answer to his question This overwhelms the brain and as he continues doing it they can't process thought, causing confusion. They snap out of with with the loud sound of the box closing. Clever :P

Also at 1:17 the subject's face (eyebrows) change just like when you try to understand something. Look at how he's paying close attention at Derren's mouth.
The only thing that I'm not sure is if the subject has consciously or unconsciously picked up the "clue".
he quite clearly mouths 'it's a stone' to the guy while facing away from the camera. watch his jaw at 1.18 very clearly it says 'it's a stone'. still a good trick though. Had me fooled for a while.

@P1eski Here's my guess on how he does this. He does this "trick" on dozens of people until one of them guesses it's a stone. That's they clip they use. The whole hypnosis thing is so if they happen to guess, by chance, it's a stone, you will think it's because of the hypnosis, not because it's a random guess. I think that's how he does it. @Ripley747 im sure derren fails to hypnotize from time to time but i don't think his success ratio is dozens to one. In reality, his producers wouldn't put up with such a joke. Derren obviously has some extraordinary techniques which is why he has an extraordinary t.v show in the first place.

In terms of his techniques and his "marketability" as an entertainer (let's face it, he's very entertaining) he's extraordinary. That doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's up against when doing these tricks. Watch Darren Brown's "The System." He understands statistics. This isn't a barroom trick. This one was designed for TV. Low success rate, but eventually he'll succeed.

@iig0tem Why not? If I had a box with an item in it and I asked 1000 people, odds are a couple would probably guess it was a stone. Odds go up if they can ask me 3 questions about what's in there. The major difference is I wouldn't be doing any hypnosis. Either way, that's my guess as to how he does it. A lot of trials before he has success.

Aside from the rather obvious edits in the video, you can see how the hand on the shoulder, swaying the guy, and the confusion he creates while interrupting him, making him sniff pointlessly, etc. is putting him into a light trance, you may notice at about 1:00 he says "Ok, you get three questions, each question BE STONE YOU require a yes or no answer." Thats when the guy really freezes...
Maybe it's the accent but it sounds to me like he's saying "each question must only require a yes or no answer" but he does blink exaggeratedly at that point, so it must be significant for some reason. There's definitely emphasis on "muSTONEly require a yes or no answer."
Maybe it's like that other thing where he is suggesting "giraffe" by saying giraffe instead of "did you have".
He replaces words that don't really have importance to meaning of the overt sentence, basically grammatical filler, which the conscious mind will ignore, and replaces them with similar sounding suggestive words.

You only notice if you are specifically looking/listening for it.
As for coming up with this, I'm sure it is all very carefully planned and scripted, with writers to help. He's not coming up with what he's saying or doing as he's filming. He probably rehearses it several times beforehand, etc.
The stone and the box are the anchors, taking them away and the loud sound of the box snapping shut is what brings him out. Asking him questions just makes sure he's awake and ok
@gb389 in this case they pretend to not have the scene cutted and have a loss of more than 1 second. it's a videoediting trick that says to the mind 'the vid is cool', when the cuts are on the right place. and it's hard to discover that from the second to the other the people are not the same, because watchers just recognize that there ARE people, not that they're the same.

Wow! For folk who find it funny the dentist asked, "Is it heavy?" - note that if the box was heavy he could have logically wondered was it the box or the object. The movements give the impression of maneuvering substance as does the solid rap. It could have been a most logical question. The simpler explanation of the dentist wondering about the cause of a heavy box seems more likely than the explanation that a man who is bright enough to be a dentist would ask a silly question. I wonder if the man shouting in the background at 1:16 has anything to do with making Shahir (sp?) thinking that he can't let go of the rock. I get how Derren puts him into the trance. During second question you can see him go blank. That's when he's most susceptible to a discrete suggestion, which is what made me wonder about the shouting in the first place. This is much like the video in which he makes a woman think her feet are stuck. But in that one, he clearly says "Stuck".

@P1eski Here's my guess on how he does this. He does this "trick" on dozens of people until one of them guesses it's a stone. That's they clip they use. The whole hypnosis thing is so if they happen to guess, by chance, it's a stone, you will think it's because of the hypnosis, not because it's a random guess. I think that's how he does it. @Ripley747 im sure derren fails to hypnotize from time to time but i don't think his success ratio is dozens to one. In reality, his producers wouldn't put up with such a joke. Derren obviously has some extraordinary techniques which is why he has an extraordinary t.v show in the first place.

@iig0tem For hypnosis, yes. He's the best. I'd like to think he could never hypnotize me, but let's face it...he would. In terms of his techniques and his "marketability" as an entertainer (let's face it, he's very entertaining) he's extraordinary. That doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's up against when doing these tricks. Watch Darren Brown's "The System." He understands statistics. This isn't a barroom trick. This one was designed for TV. Low success rate, but eventually he'll succeed.

@iig0tem Why not? If I had a box with an item in it and I asked 1000 people, odds are a couple would probably guess it was a stone. Odds go up if they can ask me 3 questions about what's in there. The major difference is I wouldn't be doing any hypnosis. Either way, that's my guess as to how he does it. A lot of trials before he has success.

Aside from the rather obvious edits in the video, you can see how the hand on the shoulder, swaying the guy, and the confusion he creates while interrupting him, making him sniff pointlessly, etc. is putting him into a light trance, you may notice at about 1:00 he says "Ok, you get three questions, each question BE STONE YOU require a yes or no answer." Thats when the guy really freezes...

Maybe it's the accent but it sounds to me like he's saying "each question must only require a yes or no answer" but he does blink exaggeratedly at that point, so it must be significant for some reason. There's definitely emphasis on "muSTONEly require a yes or no answer."
Maybe it's like that other thing where he is suggesting "giraffe" by saying giraffe instead of "did you have".

You only notice if you are specifically looking/listening for it.
As for coming up with this, I'm sure it is all very carefully planned and scripted, with writers to help. He's not coming up with what he's saying or doing as he's filming. He probably rehearses it several times beforehand, etc.
The stone and the box are the anchors, taking them away and the loud sound of the box snapping shut is what brings him out. Asking him questions just makes sure he's awake and ok

@gb389 in this case they pretend to not have the scene cutted and have a loss of more than 1 second. it's a videoediting trick that says to the mind 'the vid is cool', when the cuts are on the right place. and it's hard to discover that from the second to the other the people are not the same, because watchers just recognize that there ARE people, not that they're the same.

Wow! For folk who find it funny the dentist asked, "Is it heavy?" - note that if the box was heavy he could have logically wondered was it the box or the object. The movements give the impression of maneuvering substance as does the solid rap. It could have been a most logical question. The simpler explanation of the dentist wondering about the cause of a heavy box seems more likely than the explanation that a man who is bright enough to be a dentist would ask a silly question. During second question you can see him go blank. That's when he's most susceptible to a discrete suggestion, which is what made me wonder about the shouting in the first place.
