i keep my one pinky down, but that's how i naturaly play, some pickers don't and play just the same,so theres's no right or wrong way it's how you feel most comfortable.nise playing mate i will give you a thumbs up and a pinky down!!
Dude, ignore all these people trying to tell you what to do with your fingers. Everyone is built differently and you should play however is comfortable for you. Vladimir Horowitz violated every "rule" that piano students are taught and he only became the greatest classical pianist who ever lived!
I got the Washburn B-17, and I gotta say, it's a damn fine banjo. By the way, a little piece of advice: forget advices sometimes. I do keep my ring finger planted on the banjo head, but that's because I learned with that in mind. And if you look at some of Earl Scruggs' videos, you will see that his ringer finger DOES leave the banjo head occasionally. I have my finger planted there, and I can't pick a fraction of what you pick, buddy. If you change your pickin' style, you might ruin it! :)
Wonderful picking... I might could buy me that there banjo this month, after picking for 'bout 3 years the basic, underdog banjos - and your video was definitely a great influence in my decision of what banjo to choose. Iy sounds like what a banjo should sound. Thank you, buddy!
I pick pretty much the same finger placement as you. Only difference I have more of a "C" formation with my pickin hand. As far as the ring finger placement, one of the better pickers Roy Clark does not plant his ring finger...he is a fine picker as you are.
There are many many many different ways to play a banjo. Leave him alone. If you were to have seen half of the professional banjo players, you would realize that everyone has their own style.
@averype ok??? he still plays baddass??? so if theres a rule to dont use your tounge at your guitar i canot play it with it? zak wydle makes awesome solos with its tounge....so fuck the rules
Wow, Iuv it! I play guitar picken, and hope to begin learning Banjo one day. Does it take a long time to get to this technical skill? Whats the best Banjo to start out as a beginner with?
sounded really awsome. but banjopicker to banjo picker you tonatoin is off really bad up past the twelfth frett move your bridge around to get right. im sure you know how to do it
1banjoguy1 , I ain't following ......I plant my ring finger sometimes...but it is not a general rule, is it? but.... thank you for the advice , anyway!!!!
@Fabianpilot most people either have their ring finger and pinky down but some play with their ring down and pinky up and or pinky down like you do. it doesnt matter as long as you have something to be your foundation like you are doing.
@1banjoguy1 Wish you had told the great John Hartford and Allen Shelton this. You best tell Steve Martin, Sammy Shelor, Alison Brown and many other professional and talented banjo pickers your GREAT WORDS OF WISDOM
pleaseeee do tutorials!!! i have a ukulele now that im teaching myself how to play and i'd like to start banjo as well but i don't really see many people duing tutorials on I don't know that I could just learn on my own... great job btw!
Hi there, I have been looking at this same b17 to purchase myself and its a beauty, but they do need setup. Have you tried anything to make them sound better, any advice will help Thanks. BTW good pick'in
Hey, Thank you, but that lick is pretty easy... I play the forward roll starting from the D string sliding until the 4th fret, doing a forward roll with the G string on the 2nd fret. So you play the roll using the the 4th fret on D string , G string played on the 2nd fret and alternating the other strings during the roll... no big deal..hehehe, Thanks for watching...
Hi! This banjo player is my boy, my son! Just to say to the world I am PROOOOOUD!!! This recording was made just after only + - one year after he started with the banjo! A proud father signs on!
Hey... nice pickin'. Reminds me of my earlier style. Not sure how long you've been at it, but I use to play very much the same and found tendon problems in my hand due to the lack of a 'C' shape in my picking hand. Had to lurn all over to bend my wrist more to form that shape but found at end, it helped to improve my style and stoped the pain in my tendons. Just thought I'd share. Keep on pickin'!
Hello Jeff, Yes I have thought about the C shape even though I don't have any tendon problems yet. I've been playing for fun for 5 years and I've noticed the most banjo pickers use this C shape when they're playing including planting the ring finger too which I don't do it very often! But I know if I did all that, it'd certainly help me improve style and ability as well. Thank you for the advise! Best regards! We'll keep on picking!
Hello Banjo Master, thanks for watching... Well, if you pay attention on the video, I already plant my pinky when I play...and I end up alternating either my pinky or both...it depends what I'm playing....but hey!! thank you anyway!!
Well, its down to either a violin or a banjo haha. Played guitar for almost 7 years so id like to add something else to my repitua haha. You have inspired me to go with the banjo. Awesome job man i love the tempo of bluegrass.
Well done, impressive! I just started playing banjo, so I need inspiration like this:D Been playing guitar for several years, and think that might help me playing banjo... I'd really like to play this stuff! You have any good advice how to learn quick?
thanks man, I play the guitar too....sometimes I think my guitar picking helps me a lot on banjo learning, and it certainly does, specially with the left hand...but try to focus you study on the banjo roots and various styles played by the pros and old banjo players... there's a lot stuff out there that will help you very much, then after a while you will start to develop you own style!!!, cheers! keep on picking!!
thanks !!!! keep on picking...I'm sure you can be even faster very soon, it wont take long!! I saw you playing and you got a clean and smooth picking!! great video too!!
Thanks for sharing. Sonds great. I have an appt at my local music shop to play a b-17 tomorrow. I've only been playing for about two months, but having a blast and feel it's time to upgrade the instrument since it looks like I'll be playing a long time. I hope the b-17, plays as nice as it looks and sounds. Have you made any mods to the standard offering?
thanks man!!!...I've been playing banjo since 2004, but as an airline pilot, I don't get to play my banjo as often as I wanted. I have the average of 8 days off per month, and I just cant take my banjo on 4 or 5 days flight missons...I'd probably kill all the guests at the hotels we stay in!(hahaha) but Thanks for listening, I'll keep up practicing!!
I can't wait until I can play like this. Brilliant!
