I've heard that it was a combination of paranoia over Steven Drozd's drug habits and agoraphobia from the touring that led him to leave the band... which is really too bad, because he deserves to be remembered along side Thurston Moore/Lee Ranaldo/J Mascis/Kevin Shields/etc. as one of the truly innovative guitar players of the era.
I really wish they would play stuff from this era at their shows now.
