With all due respect to Sara Roy, only a leftist academic would be A) motivated to do such intensive work in Middle Eastern studies with respect to Gaza and Hamas and B) have the credibility to survive in Gaza with respect to her political orientation. If she wasn't "pro-Arab/pro-Palestinian" (in the general sense), she wouldn't survive in Gaza. That doesn't mean everything she says is wrong, but she is certainly politicized to a certain degree.

I appreciate her facts and some of her insights, it's her editorializing that leaves much to be desired. I would certainly prefer to see more of Sara Roy on the mainstream media circuit than the typical "pro-Arab/Palestinian" folks, whether it be an ignoramus from CAIR or some "journalist" from a fringe group like the ISM. @meshzzizk It was inside gaza when I was an army paramedic. It was in operation cast lead. The hamas tried to hit my unit. Many civilians didnt want to leave their houses. The hamas used mortars and rockets at the houses. one of the houses was hit and a young women was hit. I dont remember her name..mabye it was anar? or anwar? I treated her till the palestinians medics game and took her to the hospital. Many people injured and died becuase of the hamas and you dont see it in the news.

@AirZone19 First of all, part of the ceasefire terms was Israel's promise to ease the blockade. This never happened. Hamas did cease firing rockets and arrested other militants who continued to fire on Israel. No direct aggression occurred until Israel's incursion in Gaza on November 4th. Operation Cast Lead destroyed hospitals, mosques, schools, and farms, none holding weapons. Hamas has won support because, unlike Fatah, they don't steal. I don't defend the US invasion of Iraq or Afghanistan.

She is not defending the Hamas. Nowhere is she saying rockets or suicide bombs are ok.
She is however explaining that Hamas CAN be talked to to negotiate peace. The Hamas is not all black. It is shades of gray, something that is lost by most due to the propaganda that does nothing but depict Hamas as nothing more than a bunch of blood thirsty tugs.
I don't hear her defending Hamas' rocket attacks or suicide bombings. She is explaining, among other things, that the Palestinians did not vote for them because they support Islamic theocratic ideology. They voted for them because they saw Fatah as corrupt, and too acquiescent, and also in part because Hamas retains roots in the community, through providing social services (and things of that nature.) That's very different than saying Hamas is entirely in the right.
How can anyone defend a government that has decided killing civilians is a sound military strategy? This is detestable! Just because Israel is in the wrong does not mean Hamas is in the right. Both groups, the Israeli government and Hamas are in the wrong in this latest violent flare up.

First -- sorry I posted twice. OK, on this right to exist. Look, most supporters of Israel will not budge on the right of return because it would make Israel non-majority Jewish. What that means is, the problem is not what the Palestinian Arabs do -- it's who they are. With all due respect to Sara Roy, only a leftist academic would be A) motivated to do such intensive work in Middle Eastern studies with respect to Gaza and Hamas and B) have the credibility to survive in Gaza with respect to her political orientation. If she wasn't "pro-Arab/pro-Palestinian" (in the general sense), she wouldn't survive in Gaza. That doesn't mean everything she says is wrong, but she is certainly politicized to a certain degree.

Because politicization is synonymous with dishonesty in this context. She never acknowledges legitimate Israeli concerns (primarily regarding security) as they shape its policy towards Gaza. She is an intelligent woman with a deep knowledge of Gaza that few Westerners have, but this knowledge is conveyed through an anti-Israel prism, where she views Israel as an aggressor and colonizer, rather than honestly acknowledging that Israel is defensive and an example of resistance to imperialism.

I appreciate her facts and some of her insights, it's her editorializing that leaves much to be desired. I would certainly prefer to see more of Sara Roy on the mainstream media circuit than the typical "pro-Arab/Palestinian" folks, whether it be an ignoramus from CAIR or some "journalist" from a fringe group like the ISM. Sara Roy has a deep intellect and deep knowledge of Gaza. She could do a lot of good in advancing legitimate Palestinian grievances, I just wish she was more objective.

@meshzzizk It was inside gaza when I was an army paramedic. It was in operation cast lead. The hamas tried to hit my unit. Many civilians didnt want to leave their houses. The hamas used mortars and rockets at the houses. one of the houses was hit and a young women was hit. I dont remember her name..mabye it was anar? or anwar? I treated her till the palestinians medics game and took her to the hospital. Many people injured and died becuase of the hamas and you dont see it in the news.

@AirZone19 I don't dispute Israel's right to self-defense, but the rocketfire didn't begin until Israel broke the ceasefire on November 4th, 2008. Until then Hamas had rigorously enforced it. Maybe Hamas boobytrapped everything, but Israel bombed nearly everywhere. This is what the human rights groups all say--Israel warns civilians, but when they use insane firepower all over a tightly crammed area, people have nowhere to seek shelter. 1400 Gazans died, only a few hundred were Hamas fighters.

@AirZone19 First of all, part of the ceasefire terms was Israel's promise to ease the blockade. This never happened. Hamas did cease firing rockets and arrested other militants who continued to fire on Israel. No direct aggression occurred until Israel's incursion in Gaza on November 4th. Operation Cast Lead destroyed hospitals, mosques, schools, and farms, none holding weapons. Hamas has won support because, unlike Fatah, they don't steal. I don't defend the US invasion of Iraq or Afghanistan.

This is basically just the American segregation issue to the extreme. While Palestinians in Israel are a good deal worse off than African Americans were any time after, say, 1900, violence is not the answer. I don't see why Israel would give people rights while those same people are shooting rockets at them. Granted, what the Israelis are doing is horrible, but I think it's up to the Palestinians to adopt more peaceful measures. Even if Israel doesn't listen, they'll garner int'l support.

I'm in the military and fly helicopters, mostly the attack version. I had the opportunity to see first-hand the plans and diagrams of US targets pulled from a valley where we killed many Taliban and AQ. Yes, I'm glad I had a role in that and I sleep just fine at night knowing they're bones are being picked clean by birds of carion on that mountainside. I also fought in Somalia in the Battle featured in the movie Black hawk Down. Again, no remorse.

She is not defending the Hamas. Nowhere is she saying rockets or suicide bombs are ok.
She is however explaining that Hamas CAN be talked to to negotiate peace. The Hamas is not all black. It is shades of gray, something that is lost by most due to the propaganda that does nothing but depict Hamas as nothing more than a bunch of blood thirsty tugs.

I don't hear her defending Hamas' rocket attacks or suicide bombings. She is explaining, among other things, that the Palestinians did not vote for them because they support Islamic theocratic ideology. They voted for them because they saw Fatah as corrupt, and too acquiescent, and also in part because Hamas retains roots in the community, through providing social services (and things of that nature.) That's very different than saying Hamas is entirely in the right.

Once Hamas got elected by the Palestinian people, they were converted to a legitimate representative entity on a par with the Israeli and American governments. That the Israelis would rather bomb and make war, rather than negotiate, shows their priorities have never involved a "two-state solution" to "the Palestinian problem." I think a one state solution like we have here in America would be best for everyone. The hatred, violence and warfare have to stop immediately. Borders should be open.

mdelcamp1 - What was Hamas "legitimate" reason for unilaterally ending the ceasefire and resuming rocket attacks on civilian population? What is their "legitimate" reason for refusing to admit Israel's right to exist?
How exactly does Israel's acceptance of said ceasefire and delayed retribution indicate they would "rather bomb and make war"? They, like us, have a right and a duty to protect their people from Hamas unreasoning hatred and violence. Stop letting CNN do all your thinking for you.

The Palestinian civilian community is the one being put upon by constrictions and restrictions, all designed and imposed by the so-called hapless Israelis who had no choice in the matter? Will people please stop saying Hamas "unilaterally ended the cease fire" That's just false. Israel raided Gaza in early November. (Look it up on Amnesty International) Further, Israel never even lifted the blockade, which was a condition of the truce. Finally, as for objections to Israel's right to exist -- if that right means that Palestinian refugees don't get to return home, then, no, it has no such right. Refugees have rights to go home. And to not have their citizenship taken.

First -- sorry I posted twice. OK, on this right to exist. Look, most supporters of Israel will not budge on the right of return because it would make Israel non-majority Jewish. What that means is, the problem is not what the Palestinian Arabs do -- it's who they are. Even if they committed no violence at all, Israel would *still* not let them back in, because their very existence *as Arabs* threatens the "Jewish character" of Israel.

I'm Jewish. I understand very well the argument that Jews need a state of our own -- because of the history of antisemitism in Europe. And I have zero tolerance for antisemitism. But antisemitism is *not* the same thing as antizionism
