Its easy to improvise with the chord progresion. but, If you dnt know it how do improvise to the tune? Use the key and use the 1, 5, 3, and 7 of the key as target tones i guess... someone any tips.
when you listen to such players you've got the feeling you're watching to a magician's performance..they produce certain sounds that nobody else knew it was possible to find on that instrument they play..
I don't think we're ever going to see anyone play better than this. This is it, the ultimate. Playing and appreciating free-flowing music seems to be lost these days. Maybe it will come back someday.
God, what a wonderful piano player! I've played piano, and I considered myself, at one time, pretty good - but only if you don't compare me to folks like Errol Garner!
Merci, Merci TOURAILLE2! La joie dans cette musique and ce musicien! Pardon my French, it's not so good! But I visited your website dedicated to Garner and it is wonderful. Merci encore une fois.
Awesome piece...Garner is my favourite jazz pianist too. Now can anyone help me to find his piece Humoresque? I´ve been searching it for a while and cannot find anywhere...
Sitting on phone books to align with the keys, those small hands unleashed a tremendous artistry far beyond what might have been perceived as limitations & full of surprises every performance. I aspire to be more like this man in my own musical endeavors.
as written, the one note is F in the key of D minor. F is played as melody while chord is D minor, then D Flat major 7, then C Minor then B 7th flatted fifth, all while playing just the F. Next 4 bars are with B Flat in melody while chords are F min 7th, E 7 flatted fifth, e Flat maj 7th, A Flat 7th then repeat first four bars. See, one note for 4 bars in a row! Jobim, the composer, is a genius. So is Garner, for such a dexterious, whimsical, pretty arrangement.
@Dave78m -yes i love the progression--so simple. I do Cm7 on the G.Left hand C to Bb to F to G.Then Cm7 on the upper C.same chord progr left hand.I think Getz version does it that way.
The melody for the first 8 measures consists of one note, repeated thirty times. Indeed, this same note (Eb in the key Garner is playing the tune in) is the melody for 24 of the first 32 measures.
He is very natural and therefore he does not keep this as a Bossa Nova. He swings it and adds ot her kinds of feels to it. Nice rendition and not beboppy. He maintains a heavy 4 to the bar concept throughout.
He always sat on phone books favoring the Boston one for it's size. He was asked about that by Johnny Carson one night and said he was more able to adjust the height in strange venues. He wrote the song Misty on an airplane and was noted for not being able to read music and when asked by Carson why he didn't learn, his famous answer was "Man, once you've seen one note you've seen em all"! Carson almost fell off his chair laughing.
Honey, I am a musician and when I listened to Garner I locked my piano key cover and didn't touch it for days. I am also 71 and have an excellent memory. When Erroll made a guest appearance I watched. All the info I stated was what he told Carson and others when he was interviewed. I never repeat anything second hand.

You could tell Errol was a true innovator because after he got noticed suddenly a whole lot of pianists copied that left hand. In the UK this was best seen in Dudley Moore's work on the BBC. When I was in Singapore in the early 1950's there was a great pianist called David Ng who broadcast from the Raffles Hotel and who was a brilliant exponent of this style. I was lucky to see this guy on Penang Island and I know he was in the UK for a while. I often wonder what happened to him. Anyone know?
