    (le piano arc-en-ciel)

  • Dainieljones - ypu mention the mechanics of improvisation, but leave out emotional depth, musical skill, heart and a wonderful spirit. Pompous fool.

  • Thanks Mr, Garner you are the most enjoyable and melodic musician there ever was, nitram,

  • I seem to remember reading someplace that he could not read music.

  • Its easy to improvise with the chord progresion. but, If you dnt know it how do improvise to the tune? Use the key and use the 1, 5, 3, and 7 of the key as target tones i guess... someone any tips.

  • when you listen to such players you've got the feeling you're watching to a magician's performance..they produce certain sounds that nobody else knew it was possible to find on that instrument they play..

  • My Man!!!! The "swingingest" piano of all time!!!

  • Fantastic...what joy to see a musician enjoying himself! what ease! Delight to the ears, thanks for the posting.

  • maravilhoso

  • I don't think we're ever going to see anyone play better than this. This is it, the ultimate. Playing and appreciating free-flowing music seems to be lost these days. Maybe it will come back someday.

  • @barkulator Thanks, well said.

  • God, what a wonderful piano player! I've played piano, and I considered myself, at one time, pretty good - but only if you don't compare me to folks like Errol Garner!

  • No one like him, just fantastic.

  • simply 1st. class...thanx4thepost!

  • Merci, Merci TOURAILLE2! La joie dans cette musique and ce musicien! Pardon my French, it's not so good! But I visited your website dedicated to Garner and it is wonderful. Merci encore une fois.

  • Awesome piece...Garner is my favourite jazz pianist too. Now can anyone help me to find his piece Humoresque? I´ve been searching it for a while and cannot find anywhere...

  • His left hand not knoweth what his right hand playeth. The man is pure genious.

  • exelent example of JAZZ & BOSSA relation

  • Haha he's sitting on a book, what wonderful great pianist/musician and just sweet guy.

  • This interpretation of "One Note Samba" is absolutly stunning !

    It's a "Garnerienne" improvisation !

  • brilliant! ανεπανάληπτος!

  • Beautifully executed 5/5

  • anyone know what key garner is playing in? i thinks its gflat major but im not sure

  • Ab major, a whole step lower than the original composition by Jobim which was in Bb major.

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone know what chords he predominantly plays when he plays the RH octaves, say around 3:24?

The man was an utter genius and a joy to listen to.

  • Pikestnt: The chords there would be (roughly) Bbm7 and Eb7

  • Sitting on phone books to align with the keys, those small hands unleashed a tremendous artistry far beyond what might have been perceived as limitations & full of surprises every performance. I aspire to be more like this man in my own musical endeavors.

  • why do they call it "one note"?

  • my guess is some sustained note that carries over all the harmonies

  • lol

  • The A section of the song consists of 4 bar one-note melodies. Man I love he swings on bossa songs like he doesn't give a fuck

  • as written, the one note is F in the key of D minor. F is played as melody while chord is D minor, then D Flat major 7, then C Minor then B 7th flatted fifth, all while playing just the F. Next 4 bars are with B Flat in melody while chords are F min 7th, E 7 flatted fifth, e Flat maj 7th, A Flat 7th then repeat first four bars. See, one note for 4 bars in a row! Jobim, the composer, is a genius. So is Garner, for such a dexterious, whimsical, pretty arrangement.

  • oh ok, cool. thanks for the explanation

  • @Dave78m -yes i love the progression--so simple. I do Cm7 on the G.Left hand C to Bb to F to G.Then Cm7 on the upper C.same chord progr left hand.I think Getz version does it that way.

  • The melody for the first 8 measures consists of one note, repeated thirty times. Indeed, this same note (Eb in the key Garner is playing the tune in) is the melody for 24 of the first 32 measures.

  • thats more like 1 million notes

  • He is very natural and therefore he does not keep this as a Bossa Nova. He swings it and adds ot her kinds of feels to it. Nice rendition and not beboppy. He maintains a heavy 4 to the bar concept throughout.

  • LE plus grand pianiste de jazz de tous les temps. Unique et irremplaçable.

  • Discutable

  • Simply great

  • Errol your a "GIANT" at the piano, full power in the rhythm, great! Artist C.Jones

  • I swear he can whack the tuts with his fist and still produce a masterpiece

  • He has so many subtleties to his playing it is mind boggling!

  • He was the best of all time no one came close even Oscar petterson

  • If you are looking for pianoplayers playing the same style, check out "Gunde on Garner"

  • He always sat on phone books favoring the Boston one for it's size. He was asked about that by Johnny Carson one night and said he was more able to adjust the height in strange venues. He wrote the song Misty on an airplane and was noted for not being able to read music and when asked by Carson why he didn't learn, his famous answer was "Man, once you've seen one note you've seen em all"! Carson almost fell off his chair laughing.

  • how do u know all that stuff?

  • Honey, I am a musician and when I listened to Garner I locked my piano key cover and didn't touch it for days. I am also 71 and have an excellent memory. When Erroll made a guest appearance I watched. All the info I stated was what he told Carson and others when he was interviewed. I never repeat anything second hand.

  • perfection

  • there is no

  • Genial!!!

  • Thanks for what you have given us with your music, Erroll!

  • Is that a phone book that he's sitting on? at 0:59??

  • Looks like it haha, not even improper equipment could stop him from giving a great performance.

  • Yeah, he was only 5 "2 lol

  • that is detroit yellow pages if you look you will see his feet do not reach the peddels he did not read or wright music when first record the control people spent all day tring to remove a grunting noise in the back round and could find it one of them stood next to him and found oot it was erroll making the n

  • somewhat funky this tune.

  • You could tell Errol was a true innovator because after he got noticed suddenly a whole lot of pianists copied that left hand. In the UK this was best seen in Dudley Moore's work on the BBC. When I was in Singapore in the early 1950's there was a great pianist called David Ng who broadcast from the Raffles Hotel and who was a brilliant exponent of this style. I was lucky to see this guy on Penang Island and I know he was in the UK for a while. I often wonder what happened to him. Anyone know?

  • The greatest pianist ever to roam this planet, a man touched by God. I love those wonderful close-ups of his face -- a man deeply in love with his music and the audience.

Feel free to check out my little jazz/ swing site. Link is in my profile.

    THX for the stunning clip.

    Peace & See you,

    Brewman

  • @BrunoJazzmanLeicht yesy yesy yes to every word!!!a man deeply in love with his music and the audience.... and his work ! it was always a pleasure for him to play and NEVER work... so beautiful to see...

  • Errol Garner le plus grand pianiste de jazz

    Grandiose tout simplement!

  • Fue genial! Unico!

  • Wonderful!Love it!

  • Absolutely brilliant the way he floats over this tough armony.... beautiful!

  • This is a great brazilian music, ina a big performance!

  • Thanks, Snuffy39!.

  • C'est juste, mais... there may be other unique musicians. I was wrong to compare one with another. "Живущий несравним..."

  • que dire d'autre de Garner ,que c'est mon pianiste préféré ?

comment celà pourrait il en être autrement ?

personne n'a joué comme lui ! même parmi les grands !

    unique Garner ! vraiment !

  • Oh, my! And that man couldn't read sheets! He is a jazzpiano genius. I like him more than Art Tatum.(Am i wrong?) Does anyone know who the bassist is and who's on drums?

  • Bassist was Eddie Calhoun and drummer was Kelly Martin

  • He sure was a genius musician. Hey, and you don't need to ask if you are right or wrong... You can prefer him to Art Tatum or vise versa, your choice... (I actually like Garner more that Art Tatum too, for all that matters)

  • I believe it's his regular working trio of the time. Eddie Calhoun on bass and Kelly Martin on drums...

  • Any idea when Eugene "Fats" Heard was playing drums for Erroll Garner?

  • this swings harder than any big band

  • Oh la la! What pianist and what music! Erroll Garner I love ...

And if I may, I invite you to see one of my musical PARIS walks with his music (but not only). PARIS BY NIGHT No. 7 for example ...

With my best wishes for 2009 and my cordial greetings from Paris.

    Serge

  • Oh la la ! Quel pianiste et quelle musique ! J'adore Erroll Garner...

Et si vous me le permettez, je vous invite à voir une de mes promenades musicales à PARIS avec lui (mais pas seulement). Regardez PARIS BY NIGHT N° 7 par exemple...

  • So what have I done to deserve jazz this good?

  • absolutely(-; there is a god...

  • His hand independence is amazing. His hands are two different musicians both enjoying their parts. lol!

  • OMGGGGG Amazing !! perfect ...

  • Just like the best brasilian pianist João Maria de Abreu.

  • You can tell he was having one hell of a good time ! He could sit down and do three albums in a row in one session ! No retakes , no nothing !Solid ,done and over !

  • brilliantissime ! Erroll ruUules

    thanx for posting this video...

  • i love the facial expressions he makes, and all the random grunts and sounds he makes as hes playing

  • I`m a Jazz and Bossa Nova lover, so this is really great for me!

  • Errol plays happy music. Never disappoints. Thanks for the post.

  • ---sensaciones un poco diferentes de un contexto., se define la invulgaridad, con una levesa de sons incrivel, e casi perfecto....un saludo ao estilo "difente".

  • Listen to Dick Hyman's piano example of Errol Garner's style - in current phrases - awesome !

  • yeah it totally is ive watched it like a dozen times.

  • Erroll Garner, junto con Art Tatum dos exponentes del piano virtuoso

  • Grande Errol !!!

  • The epitome of originality and played with super humor. His intros were always fascinating.

  • Thanks for posting this outstanding version of this tune.

  • A samba song played with all the swing that Garner could give us, pure jazz, cool!!

One note samba tocada al puro estilo jazz, muy buena si señor :-)

  • wow this is creativity; to swing a song that originally has a bossa nova groove. i'm impressed. i've always like enroll garner's stuff though

  • And to think that this absolute genius lived to be only 56...but we still have his music, thank God.

  • What a sublime pianist !!!

What a character !! (Did anyone noticed the telephonebook he is sitting on lol).

  • hah!

  • This is an anthological "One Note Samba" by Erroll !

Amazingly swinging and with his original syncopated rhythm...

    It's a fantastic be-bop to dance !

  • I think he's more than very good, he's one of the greatest musical treasures of the twentieth century, a complete original. To answer the question "why the moaning?" just listen to more of Garner and you will understand. I don't think this is one his best performances...check out "I Get A Kick Out Of You", and "The Shadow Of Your Smile" to hear him at his best.

  • ok, he's VERY good. but, why the moaning?

  • because he can't help

    --

    i have that too

    SEARCH ankhaton syncopic

  • Because he's so into it, you never been there? U aint got a clue!

  • Yes, this a classinc standard by Antonio Carlos Jobim

  • what a great vid. truly one of the best performances of this song!

  • ¡Qué gratos y agradables momentos nos hace pasar su música llena de alegría, la cual transmitía!.

    Gracias, Erroll (y gracias Touraille2).

  • Did he record this song in any of his albums...??

  • Genius

  • MERCI.C'EST SUPERBE

  • Je ne connais pas ce numero (seulement de Ella qui le chante) . Mais comme toujours il le joue parfait!Merci

  • It's an early bossanova piece, written by Jobim I think.

Listen to it played on sax by Stan Getz.

  • many thanks! W Garner and the good jazz
