I recommend a Dell Latitude D830. It is cheaper than a MacBook Pro, but can run all the same types of programs. It has a 2.2 Ghz dual core processor, 4g ram, great video card. It is the PC equivelant to a Macbook Pro, but of course, is much better, and cheaper. I use it for Architecture and 3D modeling and design. It is a very good model and reasonably priced.

It's one of the early Macs. Either a Performa or a very early PowerMac, which had Base Units under the monitor. Trust me - it is a Mac. There is a startup sound at the :27 marker. Old Macs were almost as bad as PCs back then in terms of crashes... sometimes.
